~ The main theme of the event was a display of long-lasting tea production and consumption innovations that could empower smallholders. These included Solitress, a QR code technology that provides direct communication between consumer and producer, Soliprobe, an instant soil analysis company, Solimate, hyper-local weather station, Solitob, an interactive chatbot and ballotronics, an instant tea leaf reader.

 জলের পর চা হল পৃথিবীর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি গৃহীত পানীয় এবং এতে জড়িয়ে রয়েছেন লক্ষ লক্ষ ক্ষুদ্রধারক চাষি। বিশেষ করে ছোট চা উৎপাদকরা, মুখোমুখি হয় অগুন্তি আর্থিক, আবহাওয়া ও অন্যান্য জটিলতার। ভারতের সব প্রান্তের ও অন্যান্য দেশের 150-র বেশি অংশগ্রহণকারীর সম্মেলন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল কলকাতায় এসব প্রত্যাহ্বান আলোচনা ও তার সমাধান বের করতে। এসেছিলেন শ্রীলঙ্কা, বাংলাদেশ, চিন, ইন্দোনেশিয়া ও নেপালের প্রতিনিধিরা।

After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world and millions of smallholder farmers are involved in it. Small tea growers, in particular, face countless financial, weather and other complications. A conference of more than 150 participants from all parts of India and other countries was held in Kolkata to discuss these challenges and find a solution. Representatives from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia and Nepal came.

Dr. Satadru Chattopadhyay, Chairperson of Indian Tea Association (ITA) and Trinity Programme Committee Nayantara Palchowdhury, Vice Chairman of ITA Atul Asthana, Additional Vice Chairman of ITA Hemanta Bangur, Secretary General of ITA Arijit Raha, Partnership Director of Indonesian Tea Marketing Association Henry Henniardhi, Chairman of Planters Association of Sri Lanka Were present as chief guests at the inauguration ceremony of the day-long convention. Bangladesh Tea Association Chairman Shah Alam, Nepal Tea Producers Association Chairman Suresh Mittal and Confederation of Indian Small Tea Growers Association (CIST) President Bijoygopal Chakraborty. Apart from this, representatives of all Assam Small Tea Growers Association and All Bodoland Small Tea Growers Association, Jalpaiguri District Small Tea Growers Association and Small Tea Growers Association of South India along with representatives of several small tea growers of Assam, West Bengal and South India also attended the conference.

Through interactive sessions, the participants discussed the role of smallholder farmers in the tea industry and ways to promote their health and well-being, and how to make their activities and businesses sustainable. Dr. Satadru Chattopadhyay, Managing Director, Solidaridad Asia, said, “More than one million tea producers from other countries and India depend on the tea industry for their survival. The tea industry is very important for rural living as well as for the country’s manufacturing economy. Long-term health, well-being and long-term sustainability of the tea business should be the top priority, but the sector is facing a crisis as tea prices are steadily falling, destroying small tea-growers. Now, in order to empower farmers so that they can do their business well in a purpose-driven brand, Solidaridad is planning to introduce Solitress as part of Trinity, a Make-in-India Sustainability initiative involving smallholder tea farmers and a QR code technology that will allow consumers to interact with tea growers, as well as know about the safety and quality adopted. More than 92,000 tea growers have already become members of the Trinity program and before the end of 2022, the goal is to engage 100,000 small tea growers. Such innovations will gradually empower small tea growers and workers’ organizations to form independent, democratic bodies, improve their negotiations with buyers or owners, achieve financial stability, enable joint investments, and increase their collective jointness. ’

At the conference, Solidaridad launched other innovative products specifically designed for farmers such as Soliprobe, an instant soil analyzer, Solimate, a hyper-local weather station, Sollibot, an interactive chatbot, and Balotronics, an instant tea leaf reader. Solidaridad India wants to connect with more farmers and offer them acceptable farmer-friendly innovative solutions. To realize this goal, it is a dedicated team of engineers from integrating mechanical, telecommunication, electrical and electronics systems that include robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, to achieve the best results.

ছোট চা নির্মাতাদের প্রত্যাহ্বান সম্পর্কে আইটিএ চেয়ারপার্সন নয়নতারা পালচৌধুরী বলেন, ‘সমগ্র চা শিল্প প্রভাবিত হয়েছে সেইসব উপাদান দ্বারা যা সামাজিক উন্নয়ন, অর্থনীতি ও পরিবেশ বিরোধী। এসব উপাদানের মধ্যে রয়েছে আবহাওয়া পরিবর্তন, মূল্যের স্ট্যাগনেশন, হাই ইনপুট কস্টের ক্রমবর্ধিত অভিঘাত যা উৎপাদন খরচের বাধাস্বরূপ এবং এর পাশাপাশি চাহিদা ও জোগানের মাঝে ভারসাম্য আনতে দেয় না যার ফল অতিরিক্ত জোগান। উপরন্তু, এই শিল্পকে উচ্চ পরিবহণ খরচ বহন করতে হয় পাশাপাশি সঠিক মূল্য স্থির করতে জটিলতার সৃষ্টি সম্মুখীন হয়। এই সব বাধা সত্ত্বেও, এই শিল্প প্রতিজ্ঞাবদ্ধ রাষ্ট্রসংঘের সাসটেইনেবল ডেভেলপমেন্ট গোল পূরণ করতে। এদিকে, আইটিএ-সলিড্যারিড্যাড পার্টনারশিপ যেভাবে কাজ করে চলেছে এবং চা-শিল্পে সর্বাত্মক উন্নয়ন আনছে যেভাবে, এসটিজি-দের জীবনযাপনে সামগ্রিক উন্নয়নের মাধ্যমে, তা সত্যিই প্রশংসাযোগ্য।’

Talking about the withdrawal of small tea makers, ITA Chairperson Nayantara Palchowdhury said, “The entire tea industry has been affected by elements that are against social development, economy and environment. These factors include climate change, price stagnation, increasing impact of high input costs that hinder the cost of production as well as do not allow a balance between demand and supply, resulting in excess supply. In addition, this industry has to bear the high transportation costs as well as faces the creation of complications in fixing the exact price. Despite all these obstacles, the industry is committed to meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Meanwhile, the way the ITA-Solidaridad partnership continues to function and brings all-round development to the tea industry, through the overall improvement in the lives of STGs, is truly commendable. ’

সম্মেলনে বিজয়গোপাল চক্রবর্তী বলেন, ‘আমি আইটিএ ও সলিড্যারিড্যাডের কাছে অত্যন্ত কৃতজ্ঞ প্রথম ইন্ডিয়া ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্মল টি গ্রোয়ার্স কনভেনশন আয়োজনের জন্য এবং চা উৎপাদনকারী সব দেশের ক্ষুদ্রধারক চা উৎপাদকদের অভিজ্ঞতা ও সাফল্যের কাহিনি বলার সুযোগ করে দেওয়ার জন্য।’ দিনব্যাপী এই অনুষ্ঠান এইসঙ্গে দেখেছে টেকনিক্যাল সেশন, যেখানে ছিল প্রেজেন্টেশন ও আলোচনা, যা করেছেন শিল্পের ক্যাপ্টেন ও বিশেষজ্ঞরা, তাঁদের সঙ্গে ছিলেন স্মল গ্রোয়ার প্রতিনিধিরা। তাঁরা কথা বলেছেন মূল্য ও জোগান শৃঙ্খলের বিভিন্ন দিকের পাশাপাশি উদ্ভাবনী ডিজিটাল টুল ডেমনস্ট্রেট করেছেন তাদের সুবিধা দেখাতে। অনুষ্ঠান শেষ হয় একটি অ্যাওয়ার্ড সেরেমনি দিয়ে, যেখানে 15 ক্ষুদ্র উৎপাদককে সংবর্ধনা দেওয়া হয় স্পেশালটি চা উৎপাদনে তাদের অসাধারণ অর্জনের জন্য, এরপর ছিল সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান। ছোট উৎপাদকদের দ্বারা উৎপাদিত চায়ের একটি প্রদর্শনীও আয়োজিত হয়েছিল যা উদ্বোধন অনুষ্ঠানের পর সূচনা করেন মাননীয় মন্ত্রী মলয় ঘটক।

“I am extremely grateful to ITA and Solidaridad for organising the first Ever India International Small Tea Growers Convention and for giving me the opportunity to share experiences and success stories of smallholder tea growers from all tea-producing countries. The day-long event was also witnessed by technical sessions, which included presentations and discussions, performed by industry captains and experts, accompanied by representatives of Small Growa. They talked about various aspects of the value and supply chain, as well as innovative digital tools to demonstrate their benefits. The ceremony ended with an award ceremony, where 15 small growers were felicitated for their outstanding achievements in the production of specialty tea, followed by a cultural ceremony. An exhibition of tea produced by small producers was also organised which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister Malay Ghatak after the inauguration ceremony.
