ইন্দ্রজিৎ আইচঃ ঔপনিবেশিক শাসনকালে বাংলায় বৈষ্ণব ধর্মের পুনরুত্থানে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভুমিকা নিয়েছিলেন শ্রী কেদারনাথ দত্ত ভক্তি বিনোদ ঠাকুর। ১৮৬০ দশকের শেষভাগে বাংলা জুড়ে শিক্ষিত শ্রেণীর পাশাপাশি সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে বৈষ্ণব ধর্মকে জনপ্রিয় করে তোলার পিছনে তাঁর বিশেষ ভুমিকা ছিল। একজন শিক্ষিত ভদ্রলোক রূপে ঔপনিবেশিক আমলাতন্ত্রে নিছক কেরানী থেকে উচ্চ পর্যায়ের ডিস্ট্রিক্ট মেজিস্ট্রেট হয়ে উঠতে পেরেছিলেন তিনি। নানান বাধার মুখোমুখি হওয়া সত্ত্বেও তিনি বৈষ্ণব সাধনা থেকে বিরত হন নি । তিনি পরবর্তীকালে বহুবিধ ব্যাখ্যামূলক গ্রন্থ, সজ্জনতোষণী নামক একটি ভক্তিমূলক পত্রিকা এবং বিশ্ব বৈষ্ণব রাজ সভা নামে একটি সংগঠন স্থাপন করেন। এর পাশাপাশি বাংলার বিভিন্ন জেলায় কীর্তন ভিত্তিক নামহট্ট আন্দোলনের মাধ্যমে বৈষ্ণব ধর্মের প্রসার ও প্রচার করেন।
মায়াপুরে চৈতন্য মহাপ্রভুর জন্মস্থান শনাক্ত করার ক্ষেত্রেও অগ্রণী ভূমিকা ছিল তার।
সেই অসামান্য বৈষ্ণব মণীষীর ১৮৯৬ তে লিখিত আত্মকথন পত্রাকারে তাঁর পুত্রকে প্রদত্ত করেন এবং সেটি তাঁর পুত্র ললিতাপ্রসাদ দত্ত ১৯১৬ খ্রিস্টাব্দে প্রথম প্রকাশ করেন। দীর্ঘ এক শতাব্দী পার করে এই গ্রন্থটি সংশোধিত আকারে পুন:মুদ্রিত হয়েছে ভক্তিবেদান্ত রিসার্চ সেন্টার ও দে’জ পাবলিশার্সের উদ্যোগে। আজ মায়াপুরে এই গ্রন্থটির আনুষ্ঠানিক শুভ উন্মোচন করেন ইস্কনের পক্ষ থেকে জয়প্রতাকা স্বামী,গুরুপ্রসাদ প্রভু, গৌরাঙ্গ দাস প্রভু প্রমুখ সাধুবর্গ সম্পাদক ড.শান্তনু দে’এর উপস্থিতিতে। ভক্তিবেদান্ত রিসার্চ সেন্টার এই ধরণের গবেষণামূলক প্রচেষ্টায় উদ্যোগ গ্রহন করেছে। রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন বিদ্যামন্দিরের ইতিহাস বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক ও ধর্মকেন্দ্রিক ইতিহাস চর্চার গবেষক ডক্টর শান্তনু দে বলেন, বইটি গৌড়ীয় বৈষ্ণব ভক্তদের এবং সমাজ বিজ্ঞানের ছাত্র, গবেষক এবং যারা ঔপনিবেশিক বাংলার ধর্মীয় ইতিহাস সম্পর্কে জানতে আগ্রহী তাদের কাছে একটি অমূল্য সম্পদ । তিনি আরও বলেন, বাংলায় গৌড়ীয় বৈষ্ণব ধর্মের পুনরুজ্জিবনের অন্যতম কান্ডারী শ্রী কেদারনাথ দত্ত, যিনি ভক্ত কুলের নিকট ভক্তিবিনোদ ঠাকুর রূপে খ্যাত ছিলেন,তাঁর আত্মকাহিনীর পুনর্মুদ্রণ আবশ্যিক রূপেই বৈষ্ণব ধর্মানুরাগীদের কাছে তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ, যেখানে তারা পুনরায় ভক্তিবিনোদ ঠাকুরের সান্নিধ্য ছাপার অক্ষরে লাভ করবেন।
Shri Kedarnath Datta Bhakti Binod Thakur played an important role in the revival of Vaishnavism in Bengal during the colonial rule. In the late 1860s, he played a special role in popularizing Vaishnavism among the educated class as well as the common people across Bengal. As an educated gentleman, he was able to grow from a mere clerk to a high-level district magistrate in the colonial bureaucracy. Despite facing various obstacles, he did not refrain from vaishnava sadhana. He subsequently founded a number of explanatory texts, a devotional magazine called Sajjantoshani, and an organization called The Vishwa Vaishnava Raj Sabha. Along with this, he also spread and propagated Vaishnavism through the Kirtan-based Namhatta movement in different districts of Bengal. He was also instrumental in identifying the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Mayapur.
That outstanding Vaishnava Manishi gave his son in a letter written in 1896 and it was first published by his son Lalitaprasad Dutta in 1916. After a long century, this book has been reprinted in revised form at the initiative of Bhaktivedanta Research Center and Dey’s Publishers. On behalf of ISKCON, Joyprataka Swami, Guruprasad Prabhu, Gauranga Das Prabhu and other saints were present in the presence of Dr. Santanu Dey. The Bhaktivedanta Research Centre has taken the initiative in this kind of research effort. Dr. Santanu Dey, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandir and a researcher of religious-centric history, said, “The book is an invaluable resource for Gaudiya Vaishnava devotees and students of social sciences, researchers and those who are interested in learning about the religious history of colonial Bengal. He further said that the reprint of the autobiography of Shri Kedarnath Datta, one of the kandaris of the revival of Gaudiya Vaishnavism in Bengal, who was known to the devotees as Bhaktibinod Thakur, is necessarily significant to the Vaishnava devotees, where they will again get the proximity of Bhaktibinod Thakur in printed letters.
