২০১৮ সাল থেকে প্রতি বছর ১লা আগস্ট ভারতে পেপার ডে হিসাবে পালিত হচ্ছে। 1লা আগস্ট ১৯৪০-এ, হ্যান্ডমেড পেপার ইনস্টিটিউট, পুনে শ্রী জওহরলাল নেহরু দ্বারা উদ্বোধন করা হয়েছিল এবং তখন থেকে ইনস্টিটিউট ভারতে হস্তনির্মিত কাগজের সমৃদ্ধ ঐতিহ্য পর্যালোচনা ও সংরক্ষণ করে। শ. কে বি জোশী – বিজ্ঞানী মহাত্মা গান্ধীর নির্দেশে এই ইউনিটটি স্থাপন করেছিলেন, কাগজ তৈরিতে বর্জ্য পদার্থ ব্যবহার করে। এই ইউনিটে তৈরি কাগজে ভারতের সংবিধানের প্রথম সত্য কপি লেখা ও মুদ্রিত হয়েছিল। তৈরি করা কাগজটি পরিবেশ বান্ধব উপায়ে তৈরী করা হয়েছিল যা পরিবেশ দূষিত করে না। এটির শেলফ লাইফ ১০০-৫০০ বছর।
কলকাতা পেপার ট্রেডার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশন এন্ড ওয়েস্ট বেঙ্গল পেপার ট্রেডার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কাগজ বাণিজ্যের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করে এবং অন্যান্য ৩৫টি কাগজ ব্যবসায়ী সমিতির সাথে সারা ভারতে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে তারপর শীর্ষ সংস্থা ফেডারেশন অফ পেপার ট্রেডার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশন অফ ইন্ডিয়ার অধীনে যায়। ১০,০০০ + সদস্য এবং পেপার মিল নির্মাতারা ১লা আগস্ট সারা ভারতে পেপার ডে হিসাবে উদযাপন করে, একটি পরিবেশ বান্ধব এবং পুনর্ব্যবহারযোগ্য পণ্য হিসাবে কাগজের সচেতনতা, যা কোনওভাবেই বিশ্ব সম্পদের ক্ষয় বা ব্যবহার করে না।
গাছ কাটা থেকে উৎপাদিত ভার্জিন পাল্প ব্যবহার করে মাত্র ২০% কাগজ তৈরি করা হয়। আমাদের দায়িত্বশীল শিল্প কৃষকদের কাগজ উৎপাদনের জন্য গাছ চাষে নিযুক্ত করেছে। এটি কৃষক, শিল্প এবং পরিবেশের জন্য একটি জয়-জয় পরিস্থিতি। শিল্পের ব্যবহারের জন্য ক্যাপটিভ প্ল্যান্টেশন খুব দ্রুত আসছে এবং এটি কৃষকদের জন্যও বেশ লাভজনক। একইভাবে কাগজ তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত পানির দামি রাসায়নিক পদার্থগুলো উদ্ধারের পর পুনর্ব্যবহার করা হয় যা পানির সঙ্গে বেরিয়ে যায়। দূষিত পানি আর নদীতে ফেলা হয় না যার ফলে পানি দূষণের ঝুঁকি অনেকাংশে কমে যায়। জন্ম থেকে মৃত্যু পর্যন্ত, সকাল থেকে রাত পর্যন্ত, আমরা বিভিন্ন আকারে এবং বিভিন্ন উদ্দেশ্যে কাগজ ব্যবহার করি। কাগজ ছাড়া পৃথিবীর কথা ভাবা যায় না।
