রাজেন্দ্র নাথ দত্ত:মুর্শিদাবাদ : প্যাডেল রিক্সা যেন হারিয়ে যেতে বসেছে। শহর থেকে গ্রাম, কোথাওই আর সেভাবে প্যাডেল রিকশা চোখে পড়ছে না। দু-চারজন এখনও কোনওরকমে এই প্যাডেল রিক্সা চালিয়ে রোজগারের চেষ্টা করছেন। কিন্তু আর কতদিন টোটোর সঙ্গে অসম লড়াই করে তাঁরা টিকে থাকতে পারবেন তা নিয়ে সন্দেহ আছে। দ্রুতগামী হওয়ায় এবং নির্ঝঞ্ঝাটে একসঙ্গে অনেকে মিলে পাড়ার অলিগলি দিয়ে যাতায়াতের সুযোগ থাকায় দ্রুতই প্যাডেল রিক্সার জায়গা দখল করে নিচ্ছে টোটো।শহরের পথে এখন আর শোনা যায় না প্যাডেল রিক্সার হর্নের প্যাঁ পুঁ শব্দ। একসময় বহরমপুর কোর্ট স্টেশনের সামনে থেকে শুরু করে বিভিন্ন বাজারগুলির সামনে এবং বাস স্ট্যান্ডে সারি দিয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকত রিক্সা। আলাদা করে থাকত রিক্সা স্ট্যান্ডও। সেখানে গেলেই মিলত তিন চাকার সাইকেলে রিক্সা। সেই সময় রিক্সায় চড়ার চল ছিল এতটাই যে রিক্সা পাওয়া মুশকিল হয়ে যেত সাধারণ মানুষের। কিন্তু এখন কান্দী, বেলডাঙা ও বহরমপুর শহরে সেসব জায়গায় গেলে শুধুই চোখে পড়ে টোটোর ভিড়। রিক্সার জায়গা সেখানে নেই বললেই চলে।অনেক খুঁজলে হয়ত দু’চারটে রিক্সা চোখে পড়তে পারে। তবে তারা আর কতদিন সেটাই সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন। এদিকে টোটোর দাম কয়েক লক্ষ টাকা হওয়ায় দরিদ্র রিকশাচালকদের সকলের পক্ষে পেশা পরিবর্তন করা সম্ভব হয়নি। এই অবস্থায় অসহায় গরিব মানুষগুলো আগামী দিনে কীভাবে সংসার চালাবেন সেটাই সবচেয়ে বড় চিন্তা হয়ে দেখা দিয়েছে। মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার কান্দী, বহরমপুর, বেলডাঙা, রঘুনাথগঞ্জ, জঙ্গীপুর ও ডোমকল শহরে একসময় চলত প্রায় কুড়ি হাজারের মত রিক্সা। সেখানে বর্তমানে মাত্র ৪০ থেকে ৫০ টি রিক্সা এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে। সেই জায়গা দখল করে নিয়েছে টোটো। ভবিষ্যতে হয়ত স্মৃতির খাতাতেই থাকবে তিন চাকার সাইকেল রিক্সা।

Toto is quickly taking over the place of pedal rickshaws due to its speed and ease of traveling through neighborhood lanes. The peddle rickshaw horn can no longer be heard on the city roads. Once upon a time, rickshaws used to line up in front of Baharampur Court Station, in front of various markets and at bus stands. There was also a separate rickshaw stand. If you go there, you will meet a rickshaw on a three-wheeled bicycle. At that time rickshaw riding was so popular that getting a rickshaw became difficult for common people. But now when you go to Kandi, Beldanga and Baharampur, you only see the crowd of Toto. There is no place for rickshaws. If you look hard, you can see two or four rickshaws. But how long will they last is the biggest question. Meanwhile, since the price of toto is several lakhs of rupees, it was not possible for all the poor rickshaw pullers to change their profession. In this situation, how the helpless poor people will manage their family in the future has become the biggest concern. About twenty thousand rickshaws once plyed in Kandi, Baharampur, Beldanga, Raghunathganj, Jangipur and Domkal cities of Murshidabad district. There are currently only 40 to 50 rickshaws. Toto has taken over that place. In the future, three-wheeled cycle rickshaws may remain in the memory
