ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট চিকিৎসায় সমন্বিত পরিষেবার গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরে ডা. উপাল সেনগুপ্ত বলেন, “এন্ড-স্টেজ রেনাল ডিজিজে আক্রান্ত রোগীদের জন্য কিডনি ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্টই সবচেয়ে কার্যকর চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতি। তবে ভারতে এখনও চাহিদা এবং ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্টের প্রাপ্যতার মধ্যে বড় ফারাক রয়েছে। দেশে প্রতি বছর প্রায় দুই লক্ষ রোগীর কিডনি ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্টের প্রয়োজন হয়, কিন্তু বাস্তবে মাত্র পাঁচ থেকে সাত হাজার ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট করা সম্ভব হয়। মণিপাল কমপ্রিহেনসিভ ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট সেন্টারের মাধ্যমে আমরা পূর্ব ভারতে মাল্টিডিসিপ্লিনারি ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট পরিষেবাকে আরও শক্তিশালী করতে চাই, যেখানে নেফ্রোলজি, ইউরোলজি, ক্রিটিক্যাল কেয়ার এবং ট্রান্সপ্ল্যান্ট সার্জারির বিশেষজ্ঞরা একসঙ্গে কাজ করে রোগীদের জন্য মূল্যায়ন থেকে অস্ত্রোপচার এবং দীর্ঘমেয়াদি ফলো-আপ পর্যন্ত নিরবচ্ছিন্ন পরিষেবা নিশ্চিত করবেন।”

Kolkata, 12th March 2026: Strengthening access to advanced organ transplant care in Eastern India, Manipal Hospitals Kolkata launched the Manipal Comprehensive Transplant Center, a dedicated centre offering integrated transplant services for heart, kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplants on the occasion of World Kidney Day. The centre brought together leading specialists, advanced infrastructure, and a multidisciplinary clinical approach to provide seamless care, from patient evaluation and surgery to post-transplant recovery and long-term follow-up. The launch marked an important step in expanding transplant capabilities in Eastern India, where the need for advanced organ transplant procedures has been steadily increasing. The initiative aimed to build a robust organ transplant ecosystem by integrating expertise across cardiology, nephrology, hepatology, urology, oncology, and transplant surgery.
During the programme, leading experts from the hospital group shared insights on the current transplant landscape and the evolving need for specialised transplant services in the region. Speaking on the evolving transplant trend, Dr Kunal Sarkar, Director and Senior Consultant – Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur Cluster, highlighted the current scenario of heart transplantation in Eastern India, while Dr Dilip Kumar Pahari, Director – Nephrology, Manipal Hospitals EM Bypass, and Dr Upal Sengupta, Director – Team Nephrology and Clinical Lead, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, and Senior Consultant – Manipal Hospitals Broadway, Salt Lake & Mukundapur, discussed the present landscape of kidney transplantation, and Prof. (Dr) Rajib De, Consultant & Clinical Lead – Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, shared insights on the status and advancements in bone marrow transplantation in the region.
Highlighting the importance of collaborative care in transplant success, Dr. Upal Sengupta, Director – Team Nephrology and Clinical Lead, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, and Senior Consultant – Manipal Hospitals Broadway, Salt Lake & Mukundapur, said, “Kidney transplantation remains the most effective treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. However, the gap between demand and availability of transplants continues to be a major challenge in India. Every year, nearly 2 lakh patients in the country require a kidney transplant, but only around 5,000 to 7,000 procedures are performed. With the launch of the Manipal Comprehensive Transplant Centre, we aim to strengthen multidisciplinary transplant care in Eastern India by bringing together specialists across nephrology, urology, critical care, and transplant surgery, ensuring seamless evaluation, surgery, and long-term follow-up for patients.”
A panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Upal Sengupta, was also organised during the event, where leading specialists discussed the challenges, advancements, and collaborative strategies required to strengthen transplant services in the region.

Across India, the demand for organ transplants far exceeds availability, with tens of thousands of patients currently on transplant waitlists for kidneys, livers, and hearts every year, while only a fraction of these procedures are performed.
