Jugalbandi 2.0: A Marathon for Inclusion and Resilience Empowering Lives, Embracing Inclusion

The Department of Neurorehabilitation at the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK) takes immense pride in presenting a historic and first-of-its-kind initiative in Eastern India—Jugalbandi. In 2022, we pioneered this groundbreaking 5km marathon that brought together able-bodied runners and wheelchair users, showcasing the true meaning of resilience and inclusion. Following its resounding success, we are thrilled to announce the return of this inspiring event with Jugalbandi 2.0—a celebration of determination, unity, and unwavering spirit. The marathon will take place on March 16, 2025, at Salt Lake Stadium Inner Ring Road (Gate Number 3) at 6:00 AM, with the event being flagged off by renowned cricketer-turned-politician Lakshmi Ratan Shukla, followed by an inaugural function at 8:45 AM.

Jugalbandi, meaning ‘a harmonious partnership,’ embodies the collaboration of those on foot and those on wheels, demonstrating that true strength lies in unity. Building on the remarkable success of its inaugural edition in 2022, this year’s event will feature over 30 wheelchair participants across states joining forces with able-bodied runners, sending a powerful message of solidarity and perseverance.

Jugalbandi 2.0 goes beyond competition—it is a movement dedicated to reshaping societal perspectives on disability, redefining strength, and proving that no barrier is insurmountable. This event will witness wheelchair users and able-bodied individuals running side by side, demonstrating that true power emerges when people uplift one another.

This marathon signifies a personal milestone for many, marking a triumphant return to confidence and independence following life-changing injuries or medical conditions. It stands as a living outcome to determination, support, and the unbreakable human spirit.

Dr. Suparna Gangopadhyay, Director of the Department of Neurorehabilitation and College of Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy, I-NK, emphasises that emotional well-being is as critical as physical therapy in overcoming obstacles. He asserts, “Even the smallest encouragement can be life-changing for someone who believes movement is beyond their reach after an unexpected pause in life. Beyond medical intervention, what truly fuels progress is emotional support and the confidence to aim higher.” His perspective captures the spirit of Jugalbandi 2.0—an initiative to restore hope, self-belief, and limitless possibilities.
