Prof. Dirk Scherler of the GFZ German Research Centre, Berlin, chairs as a Special Guest as IISER Kolkata hosts its 5th National Science Day 


National Science Day, observed on 28th February each year at IISER Kolkata, commemorates the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman in 1928.

At IISER Kolkata, this occasion is more than a tribute—it is a vibrant celebration aimed at fostering scientific curiosity, innovation and outreach among students and the broader society. IISER Kolkata has been celebrating National Science Day for the last 4 years, continuously expanding its reach and engagement. Prof. Dirk Scherler, from the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and Freie Universität Berlin, as the Chief Guest.

He will deliver an illuminating lecture titled “Four Good Reasons to Study Earth Sciences”, offering profound insights into the mysteries of our planet and the significance of geoscientific exploration. Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay from the Department of Chemical Sciences, IISER Kolkata, will enchant the audience with his fascinating talk, “The Delightful Science of Chocolate Making”, unraveling the chemistry and artistry behind one of the world’s most beloved indulgences. Adding to this intellectual extravaganza, Dr. Kripabandhu Ghosh from the Department of Computational and Data Sciences will take the audience on a journey through the transformative realm of data analytics with his talk, “Data Science and Beyond”, shedding light on the ever-expanding frontiers of computational intelligence.
