Kolkata, 02 November 2026: As Kolkata prepares to celebrate Kali Pujo, general surgeons are urging residents to exercise caution while handling firecrackers and seek timely medical attention for burn injuries. During the 2025 Diwali–Kali Puja period, hospitals in Kolkata reported firecracker-related burns ranging from minor hand injuries to cases requiring admission. A hospital treated more than 10 burn cases in a single day, while another treated eight patients over two nights, mostly for burns to the hands. These cases highlight the importance of safe firecracker handling and appropriate first aid.
Dr. Debashis Deb, Sr. Consultant – General & Laparoscopic Surgery, RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital, Kolkata, RG Hospitals, Kolkata, said, “People often underestimate firecracker burns or apply household remedies before seeking medical advice. Toothpaste, ghee and oil should not be applied to burns, and ice can further damage injured skin. The immediate priority is to cool the affected area under running water and seek medical attention for serious injuries. Burns involving the hands, face, or eyes, as well as deep or extensive burns, require prompt evaluation to reduce the risk of complications.”
How Firecracker Burns Can Damage the Skin and Underlying Tissues
Firecracker burns occur when the skin comes into contact with flames, sparks, or hot debris. Depending on the intensity and duration of exposure, the injury may affect only the outer layer of skin or extend into deeper tissues. Severe burns can damage blood vessels, nerves and surrounding structures, potentially affecting movement and function when the hands or joints are involved.
Burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals or major joints require particular attention because of the risk of functional impairment and complications. Deep burns may need specialised dressings, wound monitoring, removal of damaged tissue or surgical treatment, depending on the extent of injury.
First-Aid Mistakes That Can Worsen Burn Injuries
A common mistake is applying toothpaste, butter, ghee, oil or other household substances to the affected area. These substances are not recommended for burn first aid and may contaminate the wound. Applying ice directly to burnt skin can also cause additional tissue damage.
Popping blisters, peeling away damaged skin, or pulling off clothing stuck to the wound can further injure the affected area. Another important concern is delaying medical care because the burn initially appears minor. The depth and severity of some burns may not be immediately apparent, making appropriate assessment important.
What to Do Immediately After a Firecracker Burn
The injured person should first be moved away from the source of danger. Cool the affected area under cool running water for approximately 20 minutes, as soon as possible. Do not apply ice or household remedies to the wound.
Remove nearby jewellery or clothing carefully if it is not stuck to the skin. Do not pull away material adhering to the burn. After cooling, cover the injury loosely with a clean, non-fluffy dressing. Avoid applying creams or antiseptics unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Extensive or deep burns, injuries involving the face or hands, and burns associated with breathing difficulties require urgent medical attention. Firecracker-related eye injuries should also be assessed urgently, and the affected eye should not be rubbed.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Large or deep burns, injuries involving the face, hands, feet, or major joints, and any firecracker-related eye injury require prompt medical assessment. White or charred skin and reduced sensation may indicate a serious burn. Breathing difficulties require emergency care. Increasing redness, swelling, discharge, worsening pain,n or fever after a burn should also prompt medical evaluation.
Preventing Firecracker Injuries During Kali Pujo
Residents should light firecrackers in open spaces, follow safety instructions, and maintain a safe distance. Children should be supervised by adults, and unexploded crackers should never be handled or relit. Keeping water or a suitable fire extinguisher nearby can help in an emergency.
Doctors advise residents to avoid unverified home remedies and seek timely medical care for serious burns. Appropriate first aid and prompt assessment can help reduce complications and support recovery during Kali Pujo celebrations.
