Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata Celebrates its 12th Convocation on 24th June 2025


Kolkata: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER Kolkata) celebrated its 12th Convocation Ceremony at the R N Tagore Auditorium, which was held on the 24th of June, 2025, on a grand scale. This momentous occasion witnessed 340 students graduating and receiving their degrees, which include 192 BS-MS, 17 BS, 1 Diploma, 34 MP, 2 IPhD (MS), 24 IPh.D and 70 PhD degrees marking the culmination of their rigorous academic journey at one of India’s premier institutes dedicated to science, education and research.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, as the Chief Guest, Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, as the Guest of Honour and Prof. Arvind A Natu, Chairman, Board of Governors, IISER Kolkata. Prof. Abhay Karandikar has been instrumental in promoting advanced scientific research in the country. His presence at the convocation inspired and motivated the graduating students and the entire IISER Kolkata community. The convocation ceremony was also attended by several dignitaries, members of the Senate and Board of Governors, and distinguished guests. The event certainly was a memorable day for the graduates and their proud families who witnessed the conferral of degrees and the recognition of the students’ hard work and achievements.

Since its inception in 2006, IISER Kolkata has been committed to fostering a culture of excellence in education and research. The IISER Kolkata family has grown to the strength of 128 faculty members, distributed across seven academic departments and supported by a dedicated team of 88 administrative staff members. In addition, we have a few visiting, adjunct and honorary faculty members of great distinction who enrich the vibrant atmosphere at IISER Kolkata. This year, we had more than 15 distinguished visitors from various national & international institutes and organisations on our campus. Our combined student strength across all departments is at a record high, comprising 867 BS-MS, 85 Integrated Ph.D (IPh.D), 457 doctoral students and 14 post-doctoral fellows. We have 70 PhD students and 24 IPhD students who have graduated during this academic year, including One International student from Nigeria.

The institute’s graduates have consistently demonstrated outstanding capabilities in various scientific domains, contributing significantly to academia, industry, and research both in India and internationally. IISER Kolkata now stands as one of the country’s eminent institutions of science, with an NIRF ranking of 61.  IISER Kolkata is actively collaborating with other National and Global institutions, and we currently have 20 National and 7 International active MoUs, including those with Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG), Germany and the Taiwan National Academy of Sciences. Industrial organisations like Tata Steel and Bharat Biotech International Limited have supported the translational part of IISER’s research.

New sponsored research projects and schemes amounting to over 20 Crores have been obtained by our faculty members during this year. It has enhanced our total tally to over 170 ongoing projects and schemes worth over 85 Crores on issues like sustainable environment, earth sciences, quantum research, impact of chemicals on society and environment, etc. Also, to is noted that the total number of Patents filed during the financial year 2024-25 is eight, and the total number of patents filed as of the date is 48.  As IISER Kolkata celebrates its 12th convocation, the institute continues to uphold its mission of nurturing scientific talent and contributing to the global scientific community. Prof. Sunil Kumar Khare, Director of IISER Kolkata, congratulated all the graduating students and wished them the very best for their future. This convocation not only marks the end of an academic chapter for the graduates but also the beginning of their new journey as they embark on their professional careers and further studies.

PRESS BRIEF  2: Inauguration of RISE Foundation IISER

The RISE Foundation IISER was formally inaugurated on 24th June 2025, marking a significant milestone in advancing innovation and deep-tech entrepreneurship in Eastern and North-Eastern India. RISE Foundation IISER is a DST-NSTEDB-funded Technology Business Incubator (TBI) promoted by IISER Kolkata, dedicated to nurturing startups and fostering innovation across all socio-economic segments. The Foundation supports technology and business development in key sectors including affordable healthcare, AI/ML solutions, agriculture and allied fields, smart materials, renewable energy, sustainability, and earth and climate sciences. Its mission is to build a robust science-led innovation ecosystem, with a vision to serve as a gateway for science translation and entrepreneurship in the region.

The inauguration was graced by distinguished dignitaries from government, academia, and industry, including Prof. Abhay Karandikar (Secretary, DST, GoI), Sri Vijay Bharti (Secretary, DST & BT, Govt of West Bengal), Prof. A. Natu (Chairman, BoG, IISER Kolkata), Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee (Member Technology Developmentboard GoI, Former Sr. VP Technology & R&D TATA Steel) and Prof. Sunil Khare (Director, IISER Kolkata), among others. As part of the inaugural ceremony, several innovative startups incubated at the RISE Foundation IISER were showcased, highlighting the diverse portfolio of technologies being incubated at the TBI and its commitment to driving technology-led transformation and facilitating inclusive growth of the country.
