The grand opening took place on the highly auspicious occasion of Ulta Rath Yatra, symbolising new beginnings, healing, and hope for patients suffering from acute and chronic respiratory ailments. The cutting-edge facility has been established under the expert leadership of a distinguished trio of interventional pulmonologists: Dr Subhankar Chakraborty, Dr Deboprasad Das, and Dr Riksoam Chatterjee. Their collective vision and expertise aim to bridge the gap between intensive critical care and general respiratory medicine, providing highly specialised, round-the-clock intervention for complex lung diseases.

The ceremonial ribbon-cutting and inauguration were solemnly performed by the hospital’s senior leadership, Dr. Joydip Bhattacharjee, Chief of Medical Services, and Dr. Rimita Dey, Head of Critical Care, Ruby General Hospital. Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Joydip Bhattacharjee highlighted the hospital’s ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, stating that the new RCU will significantly reduce the burden on general intensive care units while delivering targeted therapy. Dr. Rimita Dey emphasized the importance of seamless synergy between pulmonology and critical care, noting that this specialized unit is equipped with advanced non-invasive ventilation, high-flow nasal oxygen therapies, and dedicated monitoring systems to handle respiratory emergencies with precision.

The existing Interventional Pulmonology team of Dr Chakraborty, Dr Das, and Dr Chatterjee expressed their shared dedication to bringing advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities—including bronchoscopy, EBUS, and thoracoscopy services—closer to patients requiring immediate respiratory stabilisation. To ensure comprehensive bedside diagnostics, the RCU is uniquely equipped with the facility of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) and lung ultrasound. Furthermore, the unit is equipped with advanced emergency response facilities for critical airway management. This includes difficult airway management, rigid bronchoscopy, foreign body extraction, clot retrieval, and management of massive hemoptysis using balloon tamponade, airway stenting, and emergency tracheostomy support, alongside other life-saving interventional pulmonology procedures. These advanced services are available round the clock through a dedicated team of pulmonologists, anaesthesiologists, and trained support staff. With the launch of this 10-bed respiratory care unit on this holy day, Ruby General Hospital reinforces its legacy as a pioneer in quality healthcare, offering the citizens of Kolkata and Eastern India world-class pulmonary care under one roof.
