Breast Cancer Awareness Month is marked in countries across the world every October. This helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection, and treatment of this disease. Cancer of the breast has become the most frequent cancer site among urban women in India, and the number is increasing every day. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes in India. One woman dies from breast cancer every 8 minutes in India. 1 in 28 women is likely to develop breast cancer in her lifetime, with this rate increasing to 1 in 22 in urban areas. More than 50% of Indian women are diagnosed at stages 3 and 4 of the disease. The survival rate for breast cancer patients in India is around 60%, significantly lower than the 80% seen in the US, partly due to late-stage diagnosis in India.

Hereditary factor plays an important role in the causation of breast cancer. Other than this, nulliparity, early age at menarche, late age at first pregnancy, obesity, cigarette smoking, and alcohol are other known causative factors for this disease. The incidence of breast cancer is much higher in urban than in rural women. This urban/rural difference is mainly due to the difference in lifestyle. Western dietary influences and the changed lifestyles of the urban population are the major causes of the rising incidence of breast cancer in our state. Pain is generally not a common presentation of breast cancer. Lumps are common, either in the breast or in the axilla, which may not be seen but can be felt. Breast cancer may occur without the presence of lumps. The results of treatment are substantially good if breast cancer is detected at an early stage. Self-breast examination is one of the most effective tools in the early detection of breast cancer. As a special endeavour for early cancer screening, Ruby Cancer Centre is offering a mammogram at a discounted price of Rs. 500/- till 15^th December, 2025.

Since, awareness is the best tool to fight this disease, Ruby Cancer Centre, a unit of Ruby General Hospital, in association with Ruby General Hospital and Ruby Cancer Care & Research Foundation, had organized a picturesque awareness rally from Ruby General Hospital on Friday, 31st October, 2025 from 9 am, to generate awareness among the common people of Kolkata, West Bengal, about the importance of early detection of breast cancer. More than 350 participants had attended the rally. The cancer survivors, who are the Real Celebrities and Ambassadors for spreading awareness about early detection and treatment of the disease, were felicitated by the celebrities of other fields and eminent personalities present at the Cancer Awareness Walk. Around 20 cancer survivors and their families had participated in the walk along with nurses, hospital staff, students of Ruby Nursing School and College, eminent Oncologists like Dr. Partha Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Somnath Sorcer, Dr. Oindrila Biswas, doctors of other specialties like Dr. Bhaswati Das, Dr. Tirtha Pratim Purkait, Dr. Rimita Dey, and others were also present. Many well-known personalities, like actors Phalguni Chatterjee, Sudeshna Roy, Chandan Sen, Vicky Nandi, Arindam Ganguly, Anindya Banerjee, Saikat Mitra, Satrajit Sen, Sayantani Guhathakurta, Anilava Chatterjee, sports personalities like Alvito D’Cunha, Mehtab Hossain, and many others, had also joined. A large number of people from all walks of life had also participated in generating awareness among the people.

রোগী দীর্ঘদিন ধরে একাধিকবার অজ্ঞান হয়ে পড়া (সিনকোপ) ও শ্বাসকষ্টের সমস্যায় ভুগছিলেন। ইসিজি, হল্টার মনিটরিং, ইকোকার্ডিওগ্রাম ও অন্যান্য রুটিন রক্ত পরীক্ষার পর জানা যায়, তিনি সিক সাইনাস সিনড্রোম-এ আক্রান্ত — অর্থাৎ হৃদপিণ্ডের স্বাভাবিক ছন্দ নিয়ন্ত্রণকারী “সাইনাস নোড” ঠিকমতো কাজ করছে না। এর সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিল গুরুতর ব্র্যাডিকার্ডিয়া, অর্থাৎ হৃদস্পন্দন স্বাভাবিকের তুলনায় অনেক ধীর। রোগীর বয়স বেশি হওয়া এবং ক্রিয়াটিনিনের মাত্রা উচ্চ থাকার কারণে, চিকিৎসক প্রচলিত পেসমেকার প্রতিস্থাপন বা ওপেন-হার্ট সার্জারির পরিবর্তে ডুয়াল-চেম্বার লিডলেস পেসমেকার ব্যবহারের সিদ্ধান্ত নেন — যা সম্প্রতি ভারতে চালু হয়েছে। এই আধুনিক প্রযুক্তিনির্ভর প্রক্রিয়াটি কোনো সার্জিক্যাল কাটাছেঁড়া ছাড়াই সম্পন্ন হয় এবং মাত্র ১৫ থেকে ৩০ মিনিটের মধ্যেই সফলভাবে শেষ হয়। সার্জারির পরের দিনই রোগীকে হাসপাতাল থেকে ছুটি দেওয়া হয় এবং বর্তমানে তিনি সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ ও স্বাভাবিক জীবনযাপন করছেন।

ডা. প্রদীপ ভৌমিক বলেন, “এই মিনিমালি ইনভেসিভ পেসমেকারটি হৃদরোগ চিকিৎসায় এক নতুন অধ্যায়ের সূচনা করেছে, বিশেষত সেইসব বয়স্ক রোগীদের জন্য যাঁদের একাধিক শারীরিক সমস্যা রয়েছে। অস্ত্রোপচারের পর দুলালবাবুর কোনো রকম জটিলতা দেখা যায়নি, এবং তিনি এখন সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ ও সক্রিয় জীবন কাটাচ্ছেন। পূর্বের সিঙ্গল-চেম্বার ক্যাপসুল পেসমেকারগুলিতে যে শ্বাসকষ্ট বা সীমিত পেসিং সাপোর্টের সমস্যা দেখা যেত, নতুন ডুয়াল-চেম্বার সিস্টেম তা পুরোপুরি দূর করেছে। পাশাপাশি, এই পদ্ধতিতে কোনো সেলাইয়ের প্রয়োজন নেই, সংক্রমণের ঝুঁকি অত্যন্ত কম এবং এর আয়ুষ্কাল প্রায় ২৫ বছর, যা দীর্ঘমেয়াদি হৃদরোগ সুরক্ষা দেয় ও প্রয়োজনে প্রতিস্থাপনের সুবিধাও রাখে।”

Kolkata, 27 October 2025: Marking a significant advancement in cardiac care, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, one of the units of the leading healthcare chains of India – Manipal Hospitals Group, successfully performed a cutting-edge, minimally invasive dual-chamber leadless pacemaker implantation. The procedure was done by Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, on an 81-year-old male patient, Dulal Kanti Ghosh, a retired mechanical engineer from Kolkata.

The patient was admitted with multiple episodes of syncope (fainting) and shortness of breath. Upon evaluation through ECG, Holter monitoring, echocardiogram, and routine blood tests, he was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome (a heart condition where the sinus node, the heart’s natural pacemaker, does not function properly), in combination with severe bradycardia (the heart beats slower than normal). Considering his advanced age and high creatinine levels, the doctor opted for a minimally invasive dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, which launched recently in India, instead of choosing a traditional pacemaker implantation or open-heart surgery.

The minimally invasive approach was performed without any surgical incisions and was completed within 15-30 minutes. The patient was discharged the following day after the surgery with no complications, and now he is leading a healthy life.

While explaining the case, Dr. Pradip Bhowmik said, “This minimally invasive pacemaker represents a major step forward in cardiac care, especially for elderly patients with multiple health conditions. After the procedure, Mr. Ghosh experienced zero complications and has been leading a healthy, active life. Unlike earlier single-chamber capsule pacemakers, the new dual-chamber system addresses previous complications such as shortness of breath and limited pacing support. Alongside, this procedure eliminates the need for stitches, significantly reduces the risk of infection, and the pacemaker has a longevity of 25 years, providing a lifetime cardiac support, with the option for replacement if needed.”

Sharing his experience, Dulal Kanti Ghosh said, “I was living in constant fear of fainting and dizziness, which affected every part of my life. After undergoing several tests at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, under the supervision of Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, it was discovered that I had a heart problem, which requires a pacemaker. As per the suggestion by the doctor and his team, we opted for a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, and it was implanted smoothly, safely, and without any complications. I am grateful to Dr. Pradip and the entire medical team of Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, for their care and support. Today, I feel completely healthy and confident.”

কেতুগ্রামে সামন্ত পরিবারের ১৭৯ বছরের ঐতিহ্যশালী কালিপুজো

পারিজাত মোল্লা , পূর্ব বর্ধমান জেলার কেতুগ্রামে সামন্ত বাড়ির পুজো ভিন্ন মাত্রা এনেছে গোটা এলাকাজুড়ে।১৭৯ বছরে পদার্পণ করলো এবারের পুজো। জানা গেছে, ১৭৯ বছর আগে স্বপ্নাদেশ পেয়ে একটি দিঘির জলের তলা থেকে উদ্ধার করা হয়েছিল পাথরের কালীমূর্তি। আর ওইবছর দেবীমূর্তির সাথেই উদ্ধার হয়েছিল একটি সশীষ ডাব। দেবীর স্বপ্নাদেশে প্রথম বছরেই পুজোর শেষে পাথরের কালীমূর্তিটি ভাসিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছিল ভাগীরথীর জলে। কিন্তু রয়ে যায় ডাবটি। পূর্ব বর্ধমান জেলার কেতুগ্রামের অনন্তপুর গ্রামের সামন্ত পরিবারের কালীমন্দিরে এখনও দেবীমূর্তির সাথেই ১৭৯ বছর আগে উদ্ধার হওয়া ডাবটি রেখে পুজো করা হয়। স্থানীয়দের বিশ্বাস দৈব নির্দেশে প্রাপ্ত ওই ডাব আজও ‘জীবন্ত ।’ সেটি দর্শনে দেবীর আশীর্বাদ মেলে। দেবীমূর্তির সামনেই সেই ডাবটি রেখেই সামন্ত পরিবারের পুজো হয়। কেতুগ্রামের ঝামটপুর এবং অনন্তপুর পাশাপাশি গ্রাম। অনন্তপুর গ্রামের সামন্ত পরিবার এলাকায় সম্ভ্রান্ত পরিবার হিসাবে পরিচিত। এই পরিবারের সদস্য বিচারপতি রবীন্দ্রনাথ সামন্ত। যিনি বর্তমানে ওয়েস্ট বেঙ্গল রিয়েল এস্টেট আপিলেট ট্রাইবুনাল এর চেয়ারপার্সন পদে রয়েছেন। এর আগে তিনি কলকাতা হাইকোর্টের বিচারপতি ছিলেন। পরিবারের অন্যান্যরাও উচ্চ প্রতিষ্ঠিত। কর্মজীবনের সুবাদে বাইরে থাকেন। কিন্তু কালীপুজোর সময় পরিবারের সকলকেই গ্রামের বাড়িতে চলে আসতে হয়। রবীন্দ্রনাথবাবু জানান ” আমাদের পুজোয় বলিদান নেই। প্রতিমা নিরঞ্জনের পরের দিনেই সেই কাঠামো তুলে নিয়ে আসা হয় মন্দিরে। ওই কাঠামো বেদিকে রেখেই সারাবছর নিত্যসেবা হয়। আবার পরের বছর ওই কাঠামোতেই দেবীর প্রতিমা নির্মাণ করতে হয়। আর সেই ডাবটিকে কাঁচ লাগানো বাস্কে ডাবটিকে সযত্নে সংরক্ষিত করা আছে। মূর্তির সাথেই সেটি পুজো করা হয়।” তবে পারিবারিক পুজো হলেও অনন্তপুরের সামন্ত পরিবারের কালীপুজো কার্যত সর্বজনীন পুজোর চেহারা নিয়েছে। শুধুমাত্র পাশাপাশি গ্রাম থেকেই নয়, দূরদুরান্তের গ্রাম থেকেও দেবীর পুজো দিতে আসেন পুন্যার্থীরা। এই কালীপুজোর সময় সামন্ত পরিবার ভোজের আয়োজন করেন। আপামর গ্রামবাসী অংশগ্রহণ করেন। সামন্তপরিবারের আমন্ত্রণে রাজ্য পুলিশ প্রশাসনের উচ্চপদস্থ কর্তারা থেকে জেলা আদালতের বিচারকদের অনেকেই এই পুজোয় সামিল হতে আসেন বলে জানা গেছে ।

দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার শতাব্দী প্রাচীন কালী পুজোগুলোর মধ্যে অন্যতম হল বালুরঘাট তহবাজার এলাকার বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরের কালী পুজো। প্রতিবছরের মতো এবছরও দীপান্বিতা অমাবস্যায় বালুরঘাটের বুড়াকালী মাতার পুজোর প্রস্তুতি চলছে জোর কদমে। কয়েকশো বছর আগে বর্তমান বালুরঘাট বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরের পাশ দিয়ে আত্রেয়ী নদী বইতো। মন্দির সহ পুরো এলাকাটা ঘন জঙ্গল ছিল। শতাব্দী প্রাচীন এই পুজোর সঠিক বয়স কত তা কেউ বলতে পারে না। আত্রেয়ী নদীর ধারে এক সময় নিজে থেকেই ভেসে ওঠে বুড়াকালী মাতার বিগ্রহ। এক তান্ত্রিক সেই সময় ওই বুড়াকালী মাতার বিগ্রহকে তুলে নিয়ে এসে পুজো শুরু করেন। তারপর থেকেই বুড়াকালী মাতার নিত্যপুজো শুরু হয়। সন্ধ্যের পর অপরূপ ফুলের সুগন্ধি পাওয়া যেত ওই মন্দির এলাকা থেকে। সেইসময় মন্দির থেকে কয়েক কিলোমিটার এলাকা পর্যন্ত কোন জনবসতি ছিল না, সন্ধ্যায় বুড়াকালী মাতার নুপুরের আওয়াজ শোনা যেত। বর্তমানে বুড়াকালী মন্দির থেকে অনেকটা পশ্চিমে সরে গেছে আত্রেয়ী নদী। একটা সময় নাটোরের রানী ভবানী বজরায় করে এসে আত্রেয়ী নদী থেকে জল নিয়ে এই মন্দিরে পুজো দিয়ে আবার ফিরে যেতেন নাটোরে, রানী রাসমণি একবার দীপান্বিতা অমাবস্যায় এই মায়ের পুজো দিতে এসেছিলেন। অনেক ভক্তই বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরকে সতীর একান্ন পীঠের এক পীঠ বলে মনে করেন, তবে এর সঠিক ও উপযুক্ত প্রমাণ এখনও পাওয়া যায়নি। প্রথম দিকে টিনের ঘেরা দেওয়া মন্দিরে বুড়াকালী মাতার পুজো শুরু হয়। বর্তমানে বিশাল আকার মন্দিরের পুজিত হন বুড়াকালী মাতা।

প্রতি বছর দীপান্বিতা অমাবস্যার কালীপূজা উপলক্ষ্যে মন্দিরে আসার রাস্তা আলোকসজ্জায় ভরিয়ে তোলা হয়। চিরাচরিত নিয়ম ও রীতি বজায় রেখেই অত্যন্ত নিষ্ঠা ও ভক্তি সহকারে এই মায়ের পুজো হয়ে আসছে। শতাব্দী প্রাচীন বুড়াকালী মাতার পুজোকে কেন্দ্র করে দিনের পর দিন ভক্তদের ভীড় আরো বাড়ছে। প্রতিবছরই কার্ত্তিক মাসের দীপান্বিতা অমাবস্যায় কালীপুজোর দিন সকাল থেকেই বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরে ভক্তদের ঢল নামে এবং সন্ধ্যার পর থেকেই বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরে পুজো দেওয়ার জন্য ভক্তদের ভিড় আরো বাড়তে থাকে। প্রতিবছরই কালী পুজোতে জেলা পুলিশ প্রশাসন বুড়াকালীর পুজোতে যথেষ্ট সহযোগিতা করে থাকে। কালী পুজোর দিন মন্দিরে প্রচুর অন্ন ভোগের হাঁড়ি পড়ে। পুজোতে এখনও পাঁঠা বলি ও বোয়াল মাছ ভোগ দেওয়া হয়। আগে ২০ কিলো ওজনেরও বোয়াল মাছ ভোগ দেওয়া হত। এই পুজোকে ঘিরে শুধুমাত্র দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলাবাসীই নয় পাশের জেলা উত্তর দিনাজপুর ও মালদা জেলা থেকেও প্রচুর ভক্ত বা দর্শনার্থী আসে। দীপান্বিতা অমাবস্যায় কালীপুজোর পরেরদিন সকালে বালুরঘাট শ্রী শ্রী বুড়াকালী মাতা পূজা সমিতির পক্ষ থেকে মা বুড়াকালী মাতার উদ্দেশ্যে নিবেদিত খিচুড়ি ভোগ ভক্তদের দেওয়া হয়।

প্রতি সপ্তাহে মঙ্গলবার ও শনিবার দুপুরে খিচুড়ি ভোগ এবং বাকি অন্যান্য দিন দুপুরে অন্নভোগ হয়। সারাবছর বালুরঘাট শ্রী শ্রী বুড়াকালী মাতা পূজা সমিতি বুড়াকালী মায়ের নিত্যপুজো পরিচালনা করে। বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরে বুড়াকালী মাতার মন্দিরের পাশাপাশি শীতলা মাতা ও শিব ঠাকুরের মন্দির আছে। চৈত্র সংক্রান্তির দিন দুপুরে শীতলা পুজো রাতে বালুরঘাটে আত্রেয়ী নদীর তীরবর্তী কংগ্রেস ঘাটে মাশানকালীর মন্দিরে পাঁঠা বলি সহ মাশানকালীর পুজোর পর বুড়াকালী মায়ের বাৎসরিক পুজো শুরু হয়। সারাবছরই মা বুড়াকালী অত্যন্ত নিয়ম ও নিষ্ঠা সহকারে নিত্য পুজিত হন। ভক্তদের অগাধ বিশ্বাস বুড়াকালী মাতার উপর, বুড়াকালী মাতার বিষয়ে এমনটাই জানালেন বুড়াকালী মাতা পূজা সমিতির সম্পাদক অমিত মহন্ত।

হিলিতে কাঁটাতারের ওপারে সম্প্রীতির কালীপুজো

দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর: দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার হিলি থানার ভারত-বাংলাদেশ সীমান্ত লাগোয়া হাড়িপুকুর গ্রাম। একেবারে বাংলাদেশের শূন্যরেখা লাগোয়া মন্দিরে কালীপুজো করেন হিলির মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষ। এই কালীপুজো ঘিরে সাজো সাজো রব গ্রামে। শুধু গ্রামবাসীরাই নয়, এই অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দিতে সামিল হন সীমান্তে প্রহরারত বিএসএফ জওয়ানরাও। শুধুমাত্র ভারতীয় বা বিএসএফ’রা নয়, সীমান্ত লাগোয়া এই পুজোয় মাতেন বাংলাদেশের মানুষও। এমনকী মন্দিরের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণও করেন তাঁরাই। তবে প্রথম থেকেই রীতি মেনে এই পুজো করেন হিন্দু পুরোহিত। কালীপুজোকে ঘিরে সেজে উঠেছে কাঁটাতারের পাশের গ্রাম হাড়িপুকুর। উৎসবের রেশ হাঁড়িপুকুর সংলগ্ন বাংলাদেশের গ্রামগুলিতেও। দীপাবলির আলোর এই উৎসবে কার্যত মনের আঁধার দূরে সরিয়ে মিলন উৎসবে মেতে ওঠেন দুই বাংলার মানুষ। দেশভাগের পর থেকেই হাঁড়িপুকুরের সীমান্তের শূন্যরেখার পিলারের পাশেই দেবী দীর্ঘদিন থেকে পূজিত হয়ে আসছেন। তবে এখানে কালীর থানে ঘটপুজোর প্রচলন আজও অব্যাহত। পুজো সারা বছরই করেন হিন্দু পুরোহিত। মূর্তি তুলে পুজো হলেও গ্রামবাসীরা এই কালীর থানকে জাগ্রত বলে মানেন। হাঁড়িপুকুর গ্রামটি মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত গ্রাম বলে পরিচিত এবং ওপারে বাংলাদেশের গ্রামগুলিও মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত। হিন্দুদের প্রচলিত রীতি মেনে হাড়িপুকুর গ্রামের এই কালীমাতার থানে পুজো সারা বছরই করেন হিন্দু পুরোহিত। কিন্তু কালীর থান এবং যাবতীয় রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ করেন ওই গ্রামের মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষ। সারা বছরই কাঁটাতারের বেড়ায় বন্দি এই গ্রামবাসীরা। বাইরের পুজোয় আনন্দ না করতে পারলেও গ্রামের মধ্যে আলোর এই উৎসবে মেতে ওঠেন। কালীপুজোকে ঘিরে আলোর ঝর্ণাধারায় সেজে ওঠে এপারের হাঁড়িপুকুর গ্রাম এবং ওপারের বাংলাদেশের বাঘমারা গ্রাম। কালীপুজোর পরদিন পুরনো রীতি অনুযায়ী খিচুড়ি ভোগেরও আয়োজন করা হয়। যে ভোগে অংশগ্রহণ করে সবাই। হাঁড়িপুকুর গ্রামের বাসিন্দাদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা গিয়েছে, স্বাধীনতার পর থেকেই হয়ে আসা এই কয়েকটি দিন এলাকায় জমজমাট পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হয়। বিদ্যুতের অভাবে প্রথমে মোমবাতি ও প্রদীপ জ্বালিয়ে পুজোর প্রচলন ছিল। কিন্তু বর্তমানে গ্রামে বিদ্যুৎ এসে যাওয়ায় পুজোর কয়েকটি দিনে ছোট ছোট টুনি বাল্বের আলোতে সেজে ওঠে দুই দেশের শূন্যরেখা এলাকা। পুরানো রীতি মেনেই হিন্দুদের দ্বারা এই পুজো চললেও সেখানে অংশ নেন হাড়িপুকুর গ্রামের সমস্ত মুসলিম মানুষ। জাত ভেদাভেদ ও দেশ ভাগাভাগি ভুলে পুজোর দিন ও পুজোর পরের দিন খিচুড়ি বিতরণ অনুষ্ঠানে সামিল হন বাংলাদেশের গ্রামের প্রচুর হিন্দু ও মুসলিম মানুষ। দেশজুড়ে যেখানে অসহিষ্ণুতার পরিবেশ নিয়ে অভিযোগ-পাল্টা অভিযোগ, এরই মাঝে সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির অনন্য নজির গড়ছে হাঁড়িপুকুর গ্রাম। এ যেন দেশজুড়ে অসহিষ্ণুতার পরিবেশেও অক্ষুন্ন সেখানকার সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির মেলবন্ধন। গ্রামের হিন্দু কালীমন্দিরের রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ করেছেন মুসলিম সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষজন। এখানে এসেই মনে হয় বিদ্রোহী কবি নজরুলের লাইন ‘মোরা এক বৃন্তে দুটি কুসুম হিন্দু মুসলমান’। আর মাত্র হাতে গোনা দুইদিন তাই এই কালীপুজো ঘিরে সাজোসাজোরব হিলির হাঁড়িপুকুর গ্রামে।

ডিসান হাসপাতালে ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার স্পেশালিটি ক্লিনিক শুরু / Desun Hospital Launches Specialized Breast Cancer Clinic, Championing Breast Conservation Surgery for Healing with Dignity

কলকাতা | ১৭ই অক্টোবর ২০২৫: আমাদের দেশে ক্যানসার আক্রান্ত মহিলাদের মধ্যে ৩০ শতাংশই স্তন ক্যানসারে আক্রান্ত। এবছর (২০২৫) দেশে নতুন করে ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসারে আক্রান্তের সংখ্যা ২,৩০,০০০। এর মধ্যে এরাজ্যে সংখ্যাটা ১৫,০০০ এরও বেশি। সবথেকে চিন্তার বিষয় হল এঁদের মধ্যে বেশিরভাগের ক্যানসার ধরা পড়েছে অ্যাডভান্স স্টেজে। এখানে উল্লেখ্য এদেশে ক্যানসার রোগীদের গড় বয়স পাশ্চাত্যের থেকে প্রায় দশ বছর কম, এঁদের বেশিরভাগেরই তাঁদের সাংসারিক বা কর্ম জীবনে থাকতেই ক্যানসার ধরা পড়ে। ওদেশে ৬০ থেকে ৭৪ বছরে স্তন ক্যনসার আক্রান্ত হবার ঘটনা বেশি। সেই তুলনায় আমাদের দেশে ৫০ বছরের নিচেই স্তন ক্যানসার হচ্ছে। এজন্য দরকার সচেতনতা। অক্টোবর মাসে বিশ্বজুড়ে পালন করা হয় স্তন ক্যানসার সচেতনতা মাস। ১৯৮৫ সালে বিশ্বজুড়ে মহিলাদের মধ্যে এই বিষয়ে সচেতনতা বাড়াতে আমেরিকান ক্যানসার সোসাইটির উদ্যোগে ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার অ্যাওয়ারনেস নিয়ে কাজ শুরু হয়। এই বিষয়টিকে মনে রেখে ডিসান হাসপাতালে ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার স্পেশালিটি ক্লিনিক চালু হল। আক্রান্ত স্তনকে যতদুর সম্ভব অক্ষুন্ন রেখে আধুনিক পদ্ধতিতে ব্রেস্ট কনসারভেশন সার্জারি করা এই ক্লিনিকের অন্যতম লক্ষ্য। এই পদ্ধতির অস্তোপচারে রোগীর ক্যানসার মুক্তির সঙ্গে আত্মবিশ্বাসও ফিরে আসে। আপাতত প্রতি সোম, বুধ ও শুক্রবারে ডিসান হাসপাতালে এই ক্লিনিক চালু থাকবে। এই উপলক্ষ্যে কলকাতা প্রেস ক্লাবে আয়োজিত এক সাংবাদিক সম্মেলনে ডা. শ্রেয়া মল্লিক, কন্সাল্টেন্ট মেডিক্যাল অঙ্কোলজিষ্ট, ডিসান হাসপাতাল বলেন যে টারগেটেড থেরাপি, প্রিসিসান কেমোথেরাপি ও অপারেশনের পরে পোস্টঅপারেটিভ রেডিও থেরাপির সহ ব্রেস্ট কনভেশন সার্জারিকে অনেক মহিলা ক্যানসার রোগীই নিরাপদ ও কার্যকরী চিকিৎসা হিসাবে বেছে নেন। ডিসান হাসপাতালের বিভিন্ন বিষয়ের বিশেষজ্ঞদের নিয়ে গঠিত টিউমার বোর্ড প্রত্যেক ক্যানসার রোগীর জন্য ষ্টেজ ও অবস্থা পর্যালোচনা করে পৃথক চিকিৎসা পরিকল্পনা তৈরি করে। ডিসান হাসপাতালের ক্যান্সার সার্জনও ব্রেস্ট সার্জারি স্পেশালিস্ট ডা. জ্যোতি গুপ্ত জানান ‘একই সঙ্গে ক্যানসারকে নির্মুল করে স্তনের স্বাভাবিকতা ধরে রাখতে আমরা অ্যাডভান্স ইমেজিং ও সার্জিক্যাল প্ল্যানিংএর উপরে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে থাকি। একজন মহিলা ক্যানসার রোগীকে শারীরিক ও মানসিক ভাবে সুস্থ, সক্ষম ও আত্মবিশ্বাসী করে তোলাই আমাদের লক্ষ্য। হাসপাতালের আরেক ক্যানসার সার্জন ডা. অমন প্রকাশ তাঁর বক্তব্যে বলেন যে প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ের ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার চিকিৎসায় পোস্টঅপারেটিভ রেডিও থেরাপির সহ ব্রেস্ট কনভেশন সার্জারির সাফল্যের হার ম্যাস্টেক্টটমি বা সম্পুর্ন স্তন বাদ দিয়ে করা চিকিৎসার সমান। শুধু ক্যানসার থেকে মুক্তিই নয়, একজন মহিলার স্বাভাবিকতা ও শারীরিক গঠন বজায় রাখতে তাঁরা যতদুর সম্ভব চেষ্টা করে থাকেন। ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার চিকিৎসার মনোবিজ্ঞানগত দিক নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে গিয়ে কন্সাল্টেন্ট সাইকোলজিস্ট অনুশীলা দত্ত জানান যে ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার চিকিৎসায় শারীরিক রোগ মুক্তির সঙ্গে সঙ্গে মানসিকভাবে সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠাও অত্যন্ত জরুরী। এবিষয়ে সাইকোলজিক্যাল কাউন্সেলিং ভয় থেকে মুক্তি পেতে, নিজের ব্যাক্তিত্ত্ব পুনরুদ্ধার করতে ও মানসিকভাবে সুস্থ হয়ে উঠতে সাহায্য করে। পরিশেষে হাসপাতালের চেয়ারম্যান ও ম্যানেজিং ডিরেক্টর শ্রী সজল দত্ত বলেন ডিসানে তাঁরা চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানকে মা্নবিকতা ও সহানুভুতির সঙ্গে ব্যবহার করে থাকেন। তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন তাঁদের নতুন ব্রেস্ট ক্যানসার ক্লিনিকও সেই ঐতিহ্যকে বজায় রেখে মহিলাদের চিকিৎসার পাশাপাশি আত্মবিশ্বাস ও স্বাভাবিক জীবন ফিরিয়ে দেবে।

Kolkata, 17 October 2025: Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in India, accounting for nearly 30% of all female cancers. In 2025 alone, an estimated 2.3 lakh women nationwide, including more than 15,000 in West Bengal, are expected to be newly diagnosed. Alarmingly, more than half of these cases present at advanced stages, and women in India are diagnosed almost 10 years younger than women in Western countries, often during their prime years of work and family life. Amidst these realities, Desun Hospital has launched a specialised Breast Cancer Clinic focused on Breast Conservation Surgery (BCS), a modern approach that treats cancer while preserving the dignity and confidence of women. Fortis Anandapur surgeons defeat life‑threatening brain tumour in 40‑year‑old Myanmar patient post 12‑hour marathon surgery

Kolkata, 7 October 2025: Fortis Hospital Anandapur successfully carried out a rare and highly complex 12‑hour brain surgery to remove a large brain tumour, about the size of a lemon, from a 40‑year‑old woman from Yangon, Myanmar. The procedure was led by Dr. G. R. Vijay Kumar, Director of Neurosurgery at Fortis Anandapur. The tumour’s size, location, and its entwined position owing to its proximity to the critical brain structures made the surgery particularly demanding. The patient had been suffering from severe headaches, progressive loss of balance, and diminishing vision for the past four months. She had lost complete vision in her left eye and showed weakness on the right side of her body when she was admitted to Fortis Anandapur. Detailed Clinical Examination of the patient revealed an exceptionally large clinoidal meningioma (a type of non-cancerous brain tumour that grows near the base of the skull), which was compressing her optic nerves, optic chiasma (the point where the optic nerves cross each other), and major blood vessels that supply vital areas of the brain. Such tumors are notorious for being among the most difficult to treat, as even minor surgical errors could result in permanent blindness and paralysis.

The operative team decided to perform a complicated craniotomy (surgically opening a part of the skull to access the brain) and microsurgical removal, considering the size of and critical location of the tumour. The operation lasted for over 12 hours. The tumour was tightly wrapped around critical brain structures, making the surgery extremely complex and high-risk. Despite these challenges, the surgical team successfully removed the entire tumour without causing harm to any of the essential neurological functions such as movement, vision, or speech. The patient has shown remarkable post-operative recovery. She is gradually regaining strength in her arms and legs, and her vision has started to improve. Currently, she can walk with support and is expected to make a full recovery over time. Speaking on the case, Dr. G. R. Vijay Kumar, Director, Neurosurgery, Fortis Anandapur, said, “This was one of the most complex brain tumour cases we have treated. The tumour was extremely large, measuring about 7.7 × 4.3 × 5.8 cm (roughly the size of a large lemon) and was located in a region of the brain that controls vision and motor functions. The tumour was entangled with vital blood vessels and nerves, making every step of the surgery extremely critical. Such surgeries require immense precision, patience, and teamwork. অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে ডা. আবির মুখার্জি বলেন, “উন্নত চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থা ও দীর্ঘায়ুর ফলে ভারতে প্রবীণ জনগোষ্ঠীর সংখ্যা দ্রুত বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে, যা একদিকে দেশের অগ্রগতির প্রতিফলন হলেও, অন্যদিকে এটি নতুন মানসিক ও সামাজিক সমস্যার জন্ম দিচ্ছে। বিষণ্ণতা, উদ্বেগ, মানসিক বিভ্রান্তি ও ডিমেনশিয়ার মতো মানসিক স্বাস্থ্য সমস্যা প্রবীণদের মধ্যে ক্রমেই বাড়ছে। একাকীত্ব, পারিবারিক ভাঙন, আর্থিক নির্ভরশীলতা ও সামাজিক কলঙ্ক এই সমস্যাগুলিকে আরও গভীর করে তুলছে। প্রাথমিক সচেতনতা, সহানুভূতি এবং সময়মতো হস্তক্ষেপের মাধ্যমে আমরা প্রবীণদের জন্য এমন এক সমাজ গড়ে তুলতে পারি যেখানে তাঁরা মর্যাদা, মানসিক শান্তি ও উদ্দেশ্য নিয়ে বাঁচতে পারেন।”

ডা. অরিজিৎ দত্ত চৌধুরী বলেন, “চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানের অগ্রগতির ফলে মানবজীবনের আয়ু যেমন বেড়েছে, তেমনি বেড়েছে প্রবীণ জনগোষ্ঠীর সংখ্যা। কিন্তু এর সঙ্গে সঙ্গে বাড়ছে বয়সজনিত মানসিক সমস্যাও, যেমন বিষণ্ণতা, ডিমেনশিয়া ও উদ্বেগ। এসব ক্ষেত্রে প্রাথমিক পর্যায়ে সঠিক রোগনির্ণয়, ওষুধ ও প্রয়োজনে মনোচিকিৎসা প্রবীণদের জীবনের মান উন্নত করতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে।”

ডা. অনুত্তমা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় বলেন, “বার্ধক্য কোনো অসুখ নয়, বরং এটি জীবনের এক স্বাভাবিক ও অনিবার্য অধ্যায়। প্রতিটি মানুষের জন্য এই পর্বটি আলাদা। পরিচর্যাকারী বা পরিবারের সদস্যদের উচিত প্রবীণদের এই পরিবর্তনের সময়ে সহানুভূতি ও মর্যাদা দিয়ে পাশে থাকা। তাঁদের শারীরিক সমস্যাকে অতিরঞ্জিত না করে, সংবেদনশীলভাবে দেখার প্রয়োজন।”

ইন্টারঅ্যাকটিভ সেশনের সঞ্চালক মিস সোহিনী সাহা বলেন, “মানসিক স্বাস্থ্য একটি সার্বজনীন অধিকার। আমাদের প্রবীণদের যত্ন ও সহায়তার পাশাপাশি তাঁদের মর্যাদা ও আবেগজনিত সুস্থতার নিশ্চয়তা দিতে হবে। মানসিক স্বাস্থ্য নিয়ে আলোচনাকে কলঙ্ক ও নীরবতার গণ্ডি থেকে বের করে সহমর্মিতা ও বোঝাপড়ার পরিসরে আনতে হবে। পরিবার, পরিচর্যাকারী ও সমাজ – সবার মিলিত প্রচেষ্টায় এমন এক পরিবেশ তৈরি করা সম্ভব, যেখানে আবেগজনিত সমস্যাকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে সমাধানের পথ খোঁজা হবে। প্রকৃত সুস্থতা তখনই আসে, যখন মানুষ নিজেকে মূল্যবান, শ্রুত ও সংযুক্ত অনুভব করে।”

The session was designed to highlight the emotional and psychological struggles of elderly citizens in the contemporary, fast-paced world and to foster dialogue around developing empathy, mindfulness, and social connection in later life.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Abir Mukherjee shared, “With improved healthcare and a longer life expectancy, India is witnessing a growing elderly population, a positive sign of progress, yet one that brings with it newer challenges. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment, dementia are highly prevalent among the elderly, often intensified by social isolation, stigma, nuclear family structures and economic dependence. Lack of awareness and timely intervention further worsens the situation. Additionally, there is a dearth of professional support, failure to adequately address care giver’s burden. It is essential that we, as a society, work collectively to create an environment of empathy, early recognition, and support so that our elderly can age with emotional well-being, dignity, and purpose.”

While talking about mental health awareness, Dr. Arijit Dutta Chowdhury stated, “With the advancement of medical science, human life expectancy has increased significantly, leading to a growing number of people in the geriatric age group. However, this also brings with it a rise in age-related mental health challenges such as dementia, depression, and anxiety. Early diagnosis and timely intervention through appropriate medication and psychotherapy, wherever necessary, play a crucial role in improving the quality of life and emotional well-being of elderly individuals.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Anuttama Banerjee opined, “Old age is not an illness but an inevitable phase of life, unique to everyone. As caregivers, our role is to create a supportive environment that helps older people embrace this transition with confidence and dignity. Health challenges should be addressed with sensitivity, without over pathologizing or infantilizing them.”

Moderator for the interactive session, Ms. Sohini Saha, stated, “Mental health is a universal right, and we must ensure that our elderly not only receive care and support but also the dignity and emotional well-being they truly deserve. Conversations around mental health should move beyond stigma and silence to empathy and understanding. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the company has introduced special women-only entry gates at select prominent Durga Puja pandals across South Kolkata, positioning Eveready Siren as a trusted companion for women during this year’s festivity. At the heart of this safety initiative is the Eveready Siren Torch with its comprehensive safety tool. Every year, all major pandals have two gates, one for the general public and one for VIP guests. 27 September 2025, Kolkata: On World Tourism Day, the Chaltabagan Durga Puja pandal ambassadors, high commissioners, and consular corps from across the globe soaked themselves in the Puja spirit. The foreign delegation, representing the UK, Estonia, France, Guatemala, Italy, Germany, Sri Lanka, and Ukraine, was welcomed by Mr Sundeep Bhutoria, Chairman, Chaltabagan Durga Puja Committee. “The rhythm is engaging….it is a wonderful experience because it is inclusive. This is my first visit to Durga Puja, but certainly not my last,” said Mr Antonio Bartoli, Ambassador of Italy in India. “This is such a great, beautiful, and amazing experience that has exceeded all my expectations. I will cherish this unique experience all my life,” said Mr Omar Castaneda Solares, Ambassador of Guatemala in India. This year’s pandal meticulously recreated the architectural soul of old North Kolkata – its heritage buildings, grand havelis, and intimate streetscapes – a sight that moved many diplomats to capture the moment with photographs and selfies. United Nations Information Centre, Director, Darrin Farrant, said, “This is once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s so thrilling to be there in Kolkata.” “To walk from Shyambazar to Shobhabazar through its narrow lanes is a journey through the city’s soul. We invited the diplomatic corps to share this living archive with the world and experience the intangible heritage that UNESCO has recognised,” said Mr Bhutoria.
