শীতের শুরুতে দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার খেজুর গাছের রস সংগ্রহে ব্যস্ত গাছিরা

দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর: হিমেল হাওয়া ও হালকা কুয়াশায় দক্ষিন দিনাজপুর জেলায় এখন শীতের আমেজ চলছে। শীত মৌসুম শুরুর সঙ্গে ব্যস্ত হয়ে উঠেছে দক্ষিন দিনাজপুর জেলার প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের মানুষ। শুরু হয়েছে শীতের মধু- খেজুর রস আহরণ।এই রস আহরণে গাছিরা এখন যাবতীয় প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে। এ মৌসুমে আবহমান বাংলায় খেজুর রস আহরণ, খেজুর গুড় আর নবান্নের উত্‍সব একটি প্রাচীন ঐতিহ্য। আর খেজুর রসের পিঠা পায়েস বাংলার উপাদেয় খাদ্য তালিকায় এখনও জনপ্রিয়। গাছিরা জানান, বছরজুড়ে অযত্ন আর অবহেলায় পড়ে থাকলেও শীতকালে চাষিদের কাছে খেজুর গাছের কদর বেড়ে যায়। কারণ এ গাছ থেকেই আহরিত হয় সুমিষ্ট রস। রস জ্বালিয়ে ঝোলা গুড়, দানা গুড় ও পাটালি তৈরি করা হয়।খেজুরের গুড় থেকে এক সময় বাদামি চিনিও তৈরি করা হতো। যার মৌতানো স্বাদ ও ঘ্রাণ সর্ম্পূণ ভিন্ন।খেজুর গাছের বৈশিষ্ট্য হচ্ছে- যত বেশি শীত পড়বে তত বেশি মিষ্টি রস দেবে।শীতের সকালে খেজুর রস পান শরীর ও মনে প্রশান্তি এনে দেয়। খেজুর রস আহরণ আর তার থেকে বিভিন্ন উপাদেয় খাদ্য তৈরি আবহমান বাংলার সংস্কৃতির অনুষঙ্গ।খেজুরের নলেন গুড় ছাড়া শীত মৌসুমের পিঠা খাওয়া জমেনা। দক্ষিন দিনাজপুর জেলার কৃষকরা নতুন ধান সংগ্রহের পাশাপাশি খেজুর রস আহরণের প্রস্তুতি শুরু করেছে।এখন চলছে খেজুর গাছের ডগা চাছার কাজ।এরপর চাছা ডগায় বাশের তৈরি বিশেষ নল লাগিয়ে সংগ্রহ করা হবে ফোটায় ফোটায় রস। মাটির হাড়িতে খেজুর রস সংগ্রহ করা হয়। তবে আজকাল প্লাস্টিকের বোতলেও খেজুর রস আহরণ করে চাষিরা।শীতের পুরো মৌসুম জুড়ে চলবে রস, গুড়, পিঠা-পুলি, পায়েস খাওয়ার পালা। আর কিছুদিন পর নতুন গুড়ের মিষ্টি গন্ধে ধীরে ধীরে আমোদিত হয়ে উঠবে গ্রাম-বাংলা। দক্ষিন দিনাজপুর জেলার বাউল এলাকার গাছি মিন্টু বসাক জানান, গাছের ডগা চেছে বাশের খিল লাগানোর কাজ চলছে। অল্পদিনের মধ্যেই রস আহরণ শুরু হবে।

খেজুর গাছ আমাদের অর্থনীতিতে বিশেষ ভূমিকা রাখে। এর পরিকল্পিত আবাদ তেমন নেই। উপরন্তু নির্বিচারে খেজুর গাছ কেটে ফেলা হচ্ছে। যা পল্লী বাংলার পরিবেশের জন্য ক্ষতিকর। খেজুর গাছ থেকে শুধু সুমিষ্ট রস ও গুড়ই হচ্ছে না, প্রকৃতির ভারসাম্য সুরক্ষায় খেজুর গাছের আবাদ সম্প্রসারণ জরুরি। প্রকৃতিতে শীতের আগমনী বার্তা সমাগত। বাঙালির এ সময়ের অন্যতম আকর্ষণ খেজুর গুড়ের পিঠা-পায়েশ।প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই খেজুর গুড়ের জন্য গ্রাম বাংলা বিখ্যাত।দিন বদলের সঙ্গে মানুষের জীবন-যাত্রায় অনেক কিছু বদলে গেলেও বদলায়নি খেজুরের রস সংগ্রহ এবং গুড়-পাটালি তৈরির পদ্ধতি। তাই শীতের আগমনী বার্তা জানান দেওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই এখানকার ‘গাছিরা’ প্রস্তুতি নেন খেজুর গাছ থেকে রস সংগ্রহের। এ জন্য প্রথমেই খেজুর গাছ কেটে পরিষ্কার করেন তারা। এরপর শুরু হয় রস সংগ্রহ। চিরাচরিত সনাতন পদ্ধতিতে মাটির ভাঁড়ে (কলসি) রাতভর রস সংগ্রহ করা হয়। সূর্য ওঠার আগেই তা আবার গাছ থেকে নামিয়ে আনে তারা। পরে এই রস মাটির হাঁড়িতে কিংবা টিনের তৈরি কড়াইয়ে জ্বালিয়ে তৈরি করে গুড়-পাটালি। ইতিমধ্যে জেলার নানান জায়গায় শুরু হয়েছে গুড়-পাটালি তৈরির সেই প্রক্রিয়া। গাছিরা এখন কাজের ব্যস্ততার মধ্যে সময় কাটাচ্ছেন। অল্প দিনের মধ্যেই বাজারে পাওয়া যাবে নতুন খেজুর গুড়।গ্রামে গ্রামে পড়ে যাবে খেজুরের রস দিয়ে পিঠা, পায়েশসহ নানা মুখরোচক খাবার তৈরির ধুম। শীতের আগমনী বার্তা গ্রামবাংলায় নিয়ে আসে নানা রকম সুস্বাদু খাবারের সমাহার। বিভিন্ন রকমের খাবারের মধ্যে গ্রামবাংলায় শীতের প্রধান অনুষঙ্গ সুস্বাদু খেজুরের রস। সেই রসে তৈরি পাটালি গুড় আর শীতের রকমারি পিঠাপুলি সবার মন ভরিয়ে দেয়।লোভনীয় খেজুর রসের জোগান দিতে এখন থেকেই ব্যস্ত গাছিরা। চলছে খেজুর গাছ চাছা-ছোলার কাজ। সেসব গ্রামে গিয়ে দেখা গেছে, দল বেঁধে গাছিরা খেজুর গাছ পরিষ্কারের কাজ করছেন।মরশুমের শুরুতেই বাজারে পাটালি গুড় ও খেজুর রস ওঠে গাছিদের আগাম গাছ ঝোড়ার কারণে। বিভিন্ন গ্রামে গিয়ে দেখা যায়, কোমরে মোটা রশি বেঁধে ঝুলে ঝুলে খেজুর গাছ ঝুড়ে মাথায় চাঁচ দিচ্ছেন। এ গ্রামের পেশাদার গাছিদের পাশাপাশি গৃহস্থরাও বসে নেই, নিজের গাছ তৈরি করছেন তারা, দক্ষিন দিনাজপুর জেলার বুনিয়াদপুর ও গঙ্গারামপুরের যথাক্রমে বড়াইল, শেরপুর, শিববাড়ি ও সর্বমঙ্গলা গ্রামের কয়েকজন গাছিরা জানান, কার্তিক মাসের শুরু থেকেই খেজুর গাছের পরিচর্যা চলছে। গাছের বাইগা (ডাল) ঝোড়া, গাছের মাথা ছেনি অথবা ধারালো হাঁসুয়া দিয়ে কয়েক দফা চাঁচ দেওয়ার কাজ চলছে।রস জ্বালানো ভাটি, জ্বালানি ও রসের ঘটি সংগ্রহের কাজ শেষের দিকে। আরেক গাছি নীরদ সরকার বলেন, এই গ্রামের খেজুর রস ও পাটালির সুনাম আছে।তাই আমরা আগাম কাজ করি। রাজ্যের বিভিন্ন এলাকায় এখানকার গুড় বিক্রি হয়। জেলার গ্রামীণ মেঠোপথের ধারেই রয়েছে সারি সারি খেজুর গাছ।তাই এ অগ্রহায়নের বিকেলের দিকে গ্রামের যে পথেই হাঁটা যাক না কেন, চোখে পড়বে খেজুর গাছ ঝোড়ার অপূর্ব দৃশ্যটি অগ্রহায়ণের প্রথম সপ্তাহেই গ্রামের ঘরে ঘরে খেজুর রস আর গুড় দিয়ে নতুন আমন ধানের পিঠা-পুলি ও পায়েশ তৈরির ধুম পড়বে। আসন্ন পৌষপার্বন-পুষনা বা পীঠেপুলির উত্‍সবে এই খেজুর গুড় ও রস নতুন মাত্রা আনবে গ্রামের গৃহস্থদের রসুইখানায়।

Seth Bansidhar Jalan Smriti Mandir Hosts Grand Dev Deepawali Celebration and Ganga Aarti at Howrah Ghat

Howrah, November 5, 2025: On the auspicious occasion of *Dev Deepawali, the magnificent premises of *Seth Bansidhar Jalan Smriti Mandir, Howrah, came alive with divine radiance and devotion. The temple complex, adorned with flowers and thousands of glowing lamps, shimmered beautifully as devotees gathered in large numbers to celebrate this sacred festival on the banks of the holy Ganga. The chief guest, Param Pujya Chidanand Muni Saraswati Ji, President of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, could not be physically present due to unavoidable reasons. However, the event was still held with great grandeur and devotion. The stage was graced by distinguished guests, including Shri Radhe Shyam G. Goenka, Chairman of Emami Group and Trustee of the temple, Shri Lakshmi Niwas Bangar, and Mrs. Alka Bangar. The evening began with soulful bhajans, kirtans, and havan conducted by Acharya Dilip Ji from Rishikesh and students of the temple’s Sanskrit school. The event also featured a mesmerizing Vedic chanting session by Acharya Ram Roop Mishra, Principal of Shanti Devi International Vedic School, along with ten young Vedic scholars, which was highly appreciated by the audience.

The 61-feet-tall statue of Lord Shiva on the Ganga Ghat stands as a symbol of faith and devotion — one of the tallest in Eastern India.” Although Swami Chidanand Muni Saraswati Ji could not attend in person, he addressed the gathering via Zoom, delivering an inspiring message emphasizing the importance of culture, spirituality, yoga, and environmental consciousness. He urged everyone to remain devoted to Maa Ganga, preserve her sanctity and continuous flow, and protect the environment for future generations.

ISKCON and Sourav Ganguly Foundation Join Hands for Flood Relief in North Bengal

Siliguri / Kolkata, 11th October, 2025: In response to the devastating floods and landslides that have affected large parts of North Bengal, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), in collaboration with the Sourav Ganguly Foundation, has launched a major food relief initiative to support distressed families in the region. Under this initiative, nutritious cooked meals are being distributed daily to more than 2,500 affected families in and around Siliguri, and the service will continue for at least ten days, ensuring food security for those displaced by the calamity. The initiative marks another chapter in the continuing humanitarian partnership between Sourav Ganguly and ISKCON. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the Sourav Ganguly Foundation had similarly collaborated with ISKCON to serve lakhs of meals to impoverished families across Kolkata – a gesture that inspired many to extend selfless service during that difficult time.

Kolkata, 27th October, 2025: The All India Budo Shotokan Karate Association (AIBSKA) – Japan Shotokan Karate Association (JSKA) HQ India, today held a press conference at the Press Club, Kolkata to announce and introduce India’s official team that will represent the country at the prestigious JSKA World Championship 2025, to be held at the Ehime Prefectural Budokkan, Matsuyama, Japan, from November 1-3, 2025. The event was addressed by Shihan Tirthankar Nandy (7th Dan, Japan), Founder and Director of AIBSKA – JSKA India, along with senior instructors, athletes, and dignitaries from the sports and martial arts fraternity. During the press interaction, Shihan Nandy highlighted that this world-level championship will feature participation from over 34 Nations across 6 continents.

This will mark another milestone in India’s martial arts journey. সৌরভ এক সাক্ষাৎকারে বলেছিলেন, মেয়েদের ক্রিকেট অনেক এগিয়ে গিয়েছে। আমি যখন ২০১৯ সালে বিসিসিআইয়ের সভাপতি হই তখন মেয়েদের ক্রিকেটকে সিরিয়াসলি দেখা হতো না। খুব ভালো জায়গায় ছিল না। এখন শেফালি ভার্মা, স্মৃতি মান্ধানা, হরমনপ্রীত কৌর, রেণুকা সিং, রিচা ঘোষদের দেখে খুব ভালো লাগে এই কারণে যে, আমরা যে কাজ করেছি তা সদর্থকভাবে প্রতিফলিত হচ্ছে। ডব্লিউপিএল একটা বড় স্টেপিং স্টোন, যা ভারতীয় মহিলা ক্রিকেটের উন্নতি ঘটিয়ে এক অন্য উচ্চতায় নিয়ে গিয়েছে। সৌরভের কথায়, বিভাগ আলাদা হলেও মহিলা ক্রিকেটাররা পুরুষদের সম-বেতন পাচ্ছেন। তাঁরা এর যোগ্য। অনূর্ধ্ব ১৯ বিশ্ব চ্যাম্পিয়নশিপ জিতছে ভারত। ছটি বিশ্বকাপ জেতা মেগ ল্যানিং-সহ অস্ট্রেলিয়া দলে তাবড় ক্রিকেটাররা রয়েছেন। তবে ভারত পিছিয়ে নেই খুব একটা। কমনওয়েলথ গেমস ফাইনালে অস্ট্রেলিয়াকে ভারত হারানোর পরিস্থিতিও তৈরি করে ফেলেছিল। তিন বছর আগেও কেউ ভাবতো না ভারতের মেয়েরা ইংল্যান্ডে গিয়ে ৩-০ ব্যবধানে সিরিজ জিতবেন। খুব ভালো লাগে যখন ডাগ আউটে বসে দেখি শেফালি ভার্মা অবলীলায় ছয় মেরে বল গ্যালারিতে পাঠাচ্ছেন।

সৌরভ মনে করেন, এ দেশে পুরুষদের চেয়ে মহিলা ক্রিকেটের অগ্রগতি অনেক দ্রুত হয়েছে। আর তার অন্যতম প্রধান ফ্যাক্টর ডব্লিউপিএল চালু করা। সিএবির এক বিবৃতিতে সৌরভ বলেছেন, আজ থেকে কুড়ি বছর আগে যখন পরিকাঠামোর অভাবে মেয়েদের ক্রিকেট লড়াই চালাচ্ছিল, তখন এর ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে খুব বেশি লোক আশাবাদী ছিলেন না। সৌরভের কথায়, ক্রিকেটকে পরবর্তী স্তরে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য যে সকল মহিলা কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেছেন, তাঁদের সকলকে আমরা সাধুবাদ জানাই। যখন আমি বিসিসিআই সভাপতি হয়েছিলাম, তখন মেয়েদের ক্রিকেটের উন্নয়নে কাজ করতে পেরে আমি রোমাঞ্চিত হই এবং এর ভিত্তি শক্তিশালী করার জন্য যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা করেছি। ৫০ ওভারের বিশ্বকাপ জয় কেবল শুরু, এখান থেকে মেয়েদের ক্রিকেট আরও বড় সাফল্য অর্জন করবে বলে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি।

সৌরভ বিসিসিআইয়ের সভাপতি হয়েছিলেন ২০১৯ সালে। তার কয়েক মাস পরেই করোনার ধাক্কায় স্তব্ধ হয়ে যায় গোটা বিশ্ব। তাতেও মহিলা ক্রিকেট নিয়ে ভাবনা জারি রেখেছিলেন সৌরভ। আইপিএলের ধাঁচে মহিলাদের ক্রিকেট লিগ করার প্রক্রিয়াও এগোচ্ছিল। ডব্লিউপিএল আসার আগে মহিলাদের টি২০ চ্যালেঞ্জ টুর্নামেন্ট করতো বিসিসিআই। সৌরভই বোর্ড সভাপতি হয়ে জানিয়েছেন, বছর চারেকের মধ্যে ডব্লিউপিএল শুরু হবে। করোনা প্রতিবন্ধকতা না হলে সৌরভ বোর্ড সভাপতি থাকাকালীনই ডব্লিউপিএল শুরু হয়ে যেত। তা হয় জয় শাহ বোর্ড সচিব ও রজার বিনি বিসিসিআই সভাপতি থাকাকালীন। কোনও কিছু রাতারাতি হয় না। আইপিএলের ধাঁচে মেয়েদের ক্রিকেট করতে গেলে যত ভালো মানের ক্রিকেটার দরকার তা ২০১৯ সালে ভারতে ছিল না। সেজন্য দরকার ছিল পরিকাঠামো। তবে ডব্লিউপিএল প্রথমদিকে সাতটি দল নিয়ে করার কথা থাকলেও পাঁচটি দল নিয়ে শুরু হয়। ২০১৮ সালে মেয়েদের টি২০ চ্যালেঞ্জ হয়েছিল প্রদর্শনী ম্যাচ হিসেবে। ২০১৯ সালে তা তিন দলের টুর্নামেন্ট হয়।

আন্তর্জাতিক স্তরে যাতে ঘরোয়া ক্রিকেটাররা সাফল্য পান সে কারণে মূল দলের বিদেশ সফরের আগে মেয়েদের ভারতীয় এ দল পাঠানোর সিদ্ধান্তও সৌরভেরই মস্তিষ্কপ্রসূত। শুধু তাই নয়, বিসিসিআই সভাপতি থাকাকালীন সৌরভ জোর দেন যাতে বিভিন্ন রাজ্য সংস্থাও প্রচুর পরিমাণে মহিলা ক্রিকেটারদের পুল তৈরি করতে পারে। সেটা সম্ভব হওয়াতেই ডব্লিউপিএলে বিভিন্ন রাজ্যের ক্রিকেটাররা বিদেশিদের সঙ্গে ড্রেসিংরুম শেয়ার করছেন, নিজেদের প্রতিভা মেলে ধরতে পারছেন। বিদেশের লিগেও তাঁরা খেলছেন। সারা দেশে মেয়েদের টুর্নামেন্টের সংখ্যাও বেড়েছে। বাংলার ঝুলন গোস্বামীর কথা বাদ দিন, হরমনপ্রীত কৌর এক সাক্ষাৎকারে নিজেই জানিয়েছেন তাঁর কেরিয়ারে সৌরভের কতটা অবদান। ডিরেক্টর অব ক্রিকেট হিসেবে সৌরভ নিজে দিল্লি ক্যাপিটালস দলের সঙ্গে যুক্ত। সেই দলেরই জেমাইমা রডরিগেজ, শেফালি ভার্মারা ভারতের বিশ্বকাপ জয়ের অন্যতম কারিগর। বিশ্বকাপে টুর্নামেন্টের সেরা হয়েছেন দীপ্তি শর্মা। উত্তরপ্রদেশের দীপ্তির ক্রিকেট কেরিয়ারের উত্থান কিন্তু বাংলা থেকেই। সেই সঙ্গে প্রথম বাঙালি হিসেবে বিশ্বকাপ জয়ের স্বাদ পেলেন রিচা ঘোষ। রিচার বাড়ি শিলিগুড়িতে।

লাললিয়ানপুই এক দশকেরও বেশি আগে ক্রনিক কিডনি রোগে আক্রান্ত হন এবং ২০১২ সালে প্রথম কিডনি প্রতিস্থাপন করান। পরে গ্রাফট রিজেকশন হওয়ায় ২০২০ সালে তাঁকে দ্বিতীয়বার প্রতিস্থাপন করতে হয়। আজীবন ইমিউনোস্যাপ্রেসিভ ওষুধ খেতে হলেও, শারীরিক ও মানসিক চ্যালেঞ্জকে জয় করে তিনি দু’বারই স্বাভাবিকভাবে গর্ভধারণ করতে সক্ষম হন — যা অত্যন্ত বিরল ও চিকিৎসাবিজ্ঞানের দৃষ্টিতে অনন্য। ২০২৩ সালে তাঁর প্রথম গর্ভাবস্থায় তিনি এক সুস্থ কন্যাসন্তানের জন্ম দেন। এর দুই বছর পর, ২০২৫ সালে, তিনি আবারও স্বাভাবিকভাবে গর্ভধারণ করেন এবং ৩৬ সপ্তাহ ৬ দিনে সিজারিয়ান পদ্ধতিতে এক সুস্থ পুত্রসন্তানের জন্ম দেন, যার ওজন ছিল ৩.২ কেজি। দুইবারের গর্ভাবস্থাই সফলভাবে সম্পন্ন হয়, কোনো বড় জটিলতা ছাড়াই, এবং তাঁর কিডনির কার্যকারিতা পুরো সময় স্থিতিশীল ছিল।

On 29th October 2025, the Institute of Neuroscience Kolkata will be hosting World Stroke Day with a novel initiative, “Celebrating a new life “, and the patients who have overcome their deadly struggle with Stroke will be felicitated. In addition, the patients and their close relatives will narrate their experience of the disease and how they overcame the difficulties to the hospital staff and other people. We believe that a person who has experienced this disease himself is often the best educator and motivator. So we shall declare them our “ Stroke Mascot” on this day. The theme for this year’s World Stroke Day is “Every minute counts”. So all the discussions by our involved faculties in the Institute will be on awareness and educational activities on stroke. The institute will also portray the state-of-the-art technologies used for this deadly disease and how these technologies will incorporate the stroke sufferers in rural Bengal for emergency stroke care via the tele-stroke services. আপনারা সকলেই জানেন, বেশ কয়েক বছর ধরে আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলা পৃথিবীর বৃহত্তম পাঠকধন্য বই উৎসব। ২০২৫ সালের বইমেলায় এসেছিলেন ২৭ লক্ষ বইপ্রেমী মানুষ, বই বিক্রির পরিমাণ ২৩ কোটি টাকা। মেলার এই অভাবনীয় সাফল্যে আমরা যেমন আনন্দিত, তেমনই চিন্তান্বিতও। কারণ, আগামী বইমেলায় অংশগ্রহণের জন্য অনেক নতুন প্রকাশক আবেদন করেছেন। অথচ বইমেলা প্রাঙ্গণের পরিসর এতটুকুও বাড়ানো যায়নি। তদসত্ত্বেও গতবার আমরা সামান্য কিছু নতুন স্টল দিতে পেরেছি। তাই অত্যন্ত দুঃখের সঙ্গে জানাচ্ছি, আগামী বইমেলায় স্টলের সংখ্যা আর বাড়ানো সম্ভব হচ্ছে না। আমরা অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত, আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলায় এই প্রথম ফোকাল থিম কান্ট্রি হিসেবে অংশগ্রহণ করছে আর্জেন্তিনা – যে দেশের সঙ্গে ভারত তথা বাংলার অতি নিকট সম্পর্ক। আমাদের বিশ্বাস, এই অংশগ্রহণের মাধ্যমে দুদেশের মধ্যে পারষ্পরিক সম্পর্ক আরও দৃঢ় হবে। আজ আমাদের মধ্যে রয়েছেন ভারতে আর্জেন্তিনা দূতাবাসের দুজন প্রতিনিধি। বইমেলায় ফোকাল থিম হিসেবে অংশগ্রহণের বিষয়ে তাঁদের কাছ থেকে জানার জন্য আমরা উৎসুক হয়ে রয়েছি।

আগামী ২০২৭ আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলার সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী। এই উপলক্ষে আমরা চাইছি, যেসব আলোকচিত্রী প্রথম ২০ বছর অর্থাৎ ১৯৭৬ থেকে ১৯৯৬ অবধি ময়দানে আয়োজিত বইমেলার দুর্লভ সব ছবি তুলেছেন, তাঁদের আলোকচিত্রের একটি প্রতিযোগিতা ও প্রদর্শনী করতে। এইসব দুর্লভ ও স্মৃতিবিজড়িত ফটোর মধ্যে সেরা ১০ টিকে আমরা যথাযোগ্য মূল্যে পুরস্কৃত করব। ২০২৬ বইমেলার প্রেস কর্ণারে তাঁদের পাঠানো সব ছবিই মনোনয়ন সাপেক্ষে প্রদর্শিত হবে। আমাদের এটাও ইচ্ছা, আগামী সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী বর্ষে এই ছবিগুলি বইমেলার স্মরণিকায় প্রকাশ করার। ই-মেলে স্বচ্ছন্দে আপনাদের সংগ্রহে থাকা যেকোনও বইমেলার ছবি পাঠাতে পারেন। ছবি পাঠাবার শেষ দিন ১০ ডিসেম্বর ২০২৫। প্রতিবছরের মতো আগামী ২০২৬ বইমেলায় অংশগ্রহণ করতে চলেছেন গ্রেট ব্রিটেন, আমেরিকা, জার্মানি, অষ্ট্রেলিয়া, ফ্রান্স, স্পেন, পেরু, কলম্বিয়া, জাপান, থাইল্যান্ড এবং লাতিন আমেরিকার অন্যান্য দেশ। আলোচনা চলছে আরও কিছু দেশের সঙ্গে। অন্যান্য বছরের তুলনায় ২০২৬ এ আরও বেশি সংখ্যক দেশের উপস্থিতি আশা করছি। এছাড়া থাকছে ভারতের অন্যান্য রাজ্যের প্রকাশনাও, যেমন দিল্লি, উত্তরপ্রদেশ, মধ্যপ্রদেশ, হরিয়ানা, পাঞ্জাব, তামিলনাডু, গুজরাট, মহারাষ্ট্র, বিহার, অসম, ঝাড়খন্ড, কর্ণাটক, উড়িষ্যা, ত্রিপুরা… ইত্যাদি। যথারীতি থাকবে লিটল ম্যাগাজিন প্যাভিলিয়ন, চিলড্রেনস প্যাভিলিয়ন ও অন্যান্য আকর্ষণও। আন্তর্জাতিক কলকাতা বইমেলার অন্যতম আকর্ষণ, কলকাতা লিটারেচার ফেস্টিভ্যাল, KLF, অনুষ্ঠিত হবে ২৪ এবং ২৫ জানুয়ারি।

3rd November: The International Kolkata Book Fair happens to be the biggest festival in our state after Durga Puja. The upcoming 49th International Kolkata Book Fair will commence from 22 January and will continue till 3 February 2026. Like previous years, the fair will be inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee. Eminent poets, authors, and other scholars will be present as guests of honour at the inauguration. Venue: Boimela Prangan, Karunamoyee, Salt Lake. At the very outset, we would like to express our deep gratitude towards the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Smt. Mamata Banerjee. We are indebted to the Urban and Municipal Affairs Department, KM, DA, and Bidhannagar Municipality for the upgradation of the Mela Prangan. We are also grateful to the other various departments of the West Bengal Government, including Information & Cultural Affairs, Bidhannagar Police, and Kolkata Police, for their overall cooperation and support to the Book Fair. As you know, currently, the International Kolkata Book Fair is the world’s largest attended non-trade book festival. Twenty-seven lakh book lovers visited the last book fair in 202,5, and the book sales amounted to Rs 23 crores. Although the size of the fairground remains the same, last year we did manage to increase the number of stalls. But this year, we deeply regret that we will not be able to increase the number of stalls.

For the first time in the history of the International Kolkata Book Fair, Argentina, a country closely connected with India, especially Bengal, will be the Focal Theme Country in the International Kolkata Book Fair 2026. We sincerely believe that this will contribute to building a stronger bilateral cultural relationship between the two countries. Today, we have among us Mr Andrés Sebastián Rojas, Head of the Political and Cultural Section of the Embassy of Argentina in India, and Mrs Anandi Queipo Riavitz, Head of the Consular Section of the Embassy of Argentina in India. We will hear some interesting news from them about their participation as the focal theme in the book fair.

2027 will be the Golden Jubilee year of the International Kolkata Book Fair. For this, we cordially invite photographers who have covered the Kolkata Book Fair during the first two decades, 1976 to 1996, to share with us their best photos from their archives. The best 10 rare and nostalgic photographs will be awarded. The selected photographs will also be exhibited in the Press Corner of 2026. We also intend to publish those photographs in the 550-year Souvenir of the IKBF. The photographers may submit their iconic shots to the guild office by 10 December 2025. Like every year, Great Britain, the USA, Germany, Australia, France, Spain, Peru, Colombia, Japan, Thailand, and other Latin American Countries will be participating in the upcoming book fair. We are expecting more international participants this year. Besides, there are publications of other states of India, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Tripura, etc. As always, there will be the Little Magazine Pavilion, the ChPavilion, and other such attractions. Another attraction of the International Kolkata Book Fair — the Kolkata Literature Festival, KLF, will be held on 24 and 25 January 2026. We welcome everyone to the upcoming International Kolkata Book Fair and Kolkata Literature Festival.

বলিউডে সদ্য মুক্তি পাওয়া “থামা” ছবিতে মন জুড়ানো গান গেয়ে জনপ্রিয় বালুরঘাটের সৌম্যদীপ

‎৩১ অক্টোবর,দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর: কথাই বলে মানুষের সততা, ধৈর্য, চেষ্টা আর একনিষ্ঠ পরিশ্রম ভাগ্যের চাকা ঘুরিয়ে দেয়। আর এবার সেই ভাগ্যের চাকায় ঘুরে সোজা নিজের ছোট শহর থেকে একদম স্বপ্নের পারি দিয়েই মুম্বাইয়ের বলিউডে একটা ফোনেই ভাগ্যের রদবদল। কথা হচ্ছে দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার সদর শহর বালুরঘাটে সৌম্যদীপ সরকারের, যার মন ছুঁয়ে যাওয়া গান এখন সবার মুখে মুখে এমন কি সোশ্যাল মিডিয়াতেও ঘুরছে। বর্তমানে সৌম্যদীপের গাওয়া এই গানটি নেটিজেনদের কাছে যেমন জনপ্রিয় পাশাপাশি সকলের মুখে মুখে এই গানটি ঘুরছে এবং ট্রেনডিংয়ে রয়েছে সৌম্যদীপ। ইতিমধ্যে মুক্তি পেয়েছে পরিচালক অমর কৌশিকের ছবি “থামা”, ছবিতে অভিনয় করেছেন আয়ুষ্মান খুরানা, রশ্মিকা মান্দানা, পরেশ রাওয়াল ও নাওয়াজ উদ্দিন সিদ্দিকী। তাদের অভিনীত এই হিন্দি সিনেমার সাথে এবার ওতপ্রোতভাবে নাম জড়িয়েছে দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার সদর শহর বালুরঘাটের নাম এই ছবিতে মন জুড়ানো গান গেয়েছে বালুরঘাটের সৌম্যদীপ সরকার। অমিতাভ ভট্টাচার্যের কথায় ও শচীন-জিগারের সুরে গাওয়া “রেহে না রহে হাম” গান এখন সবার মুখে মুখে ঘুরছে। সৌম্যদীপের এহেনও সাফল্যে গর্বিত সমগ্র দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলাবাসি। বর্তমানে নিজের গানের ক্যারিয়ার গড়ার লক্ষ্যে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়ার জন্য মুম্বাইতে আছেন। তার সাথে ফোনে কথা বললে তিনি জানান- ” একজন প্রতিষ্ঠিত সংগীত শিল্পী হওয়ার লক্ষ্যে লড়াই করছি। সবার আশীর্বাদ ভালোবাসার পরিশ্রম আমার এগিয়ে যাওয়ার চাবিকাঠি”।

সৌম্যদীপ কলকাতা মুম্বাইয়ের একাধিক গানের রিয়েলিটি শোতে অংশগ্রহণ করে। ২০২৪ সালে একটি গানের রিয়েলিটি শোতে দ্বিতীয় ধাপে পৌঁছলেও বাদ পরে। আর সেটাই ছিল সৌম্যদীপের জীবনের টার্নিং পয়েন্ট। মুম্বাই থেকে নিজের বাড়ি বালুরঘাটে ফিরে আসার সময় ঘটনাচক্রে ঐ রিয়ালিটি শো-এর পরিচালক শচীন-জিগার সৌম্যদীপকে ফোন করে মুম্বাইতে ডেকে নেন আর এরপর তাকে আর পিছনে ঘুরে তাকাতে হয়নি। স্বপ্ন উড়ানের ডানা মেলে মুম্বাইতে গিয়ে তাদের লেখা সুর ও মিউজিক দেওয়া “থামা”সিনেমায় মন জুড়ানো “রাহে না রাহে হাম” গান রেকর্ড করার সুযোগ পায় সৌম্যদীপ। সৌম্যদীপকে ফোনে এই জার্নির কথা জিজ্ঞাসা করলে তিনি জানান- “বলিউডে নিজে গান গাইতে পেরে আমি ধন্য ও আপ্লুত। সুযোগ পেয়েছি শচীন-জিগার স্যারের জন্য, তাদের অসংখ্য ধন্যবাদ জানাই। একদম ছোট থেকে শিল্পী হওয়ার ইচ্ছে। নিয়মিত গান চর্চা করি সবার আশীর্বাদ ভালবাসা সাথে আছে একনিষ্ঠভাবে পরিশ্রম করে আরো এগিয়ে যেতে চাই”। গর্বিত সৌম্যদীপের বাবা বিপুল সরকার ছেলের এই সাফল্যে গর্বিত হয়ে জানান- “ও সঙ্গীত জগতে আরো প্রতিষ্ঠিত হোক এটাই চাওয়া”। সৌম্যদীপের বাবার চোখে মুখে ছেলের প্রতি গর্ব ও উচ্ছ্বাস তার প্রমাণ দেয় যা সমদ্বীপের মুখে ম্লান হাসি একটা মাইলফলক হয়ে দাঁড়াতে চলেছে সংগীত জগতে আগামী দিনে তা বলাই বাহুল্য।

‘আমাদের পাড়া, আমাদের সমাধান’

‘আমাদের পাড়া, আমাদের সমাধান’ — কর্মসূচি বালুরঘাট পৌরসভার বাইশ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডে অনুষ্ঠিত হলো পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় সারা বাংলা জুড়ে উন্নয়ণের জোয়ার এনেছেন। বাংলার প্রতিটি বুথের উন্নয়ণকে আরোও এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার লক্ষ্যে “আমাদের পাড়া, আমাদের সমাধান” কর্মসূচি ঘোষণা করেছেন। আজকে বালুরঘাট পৌরসভার বাইশ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের ৪৭ এবং ৪৮ এই দুইটি বুথ নিয়ে উক্ত কর্মসূচি অনুষ্ঠিত হলো। বালুরঘাট পৌরসভার বাইশ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের পৌর প্রতিনিধি প্রদীপ্তা চক্রবর্তী ও পৌর কর্মীদের পাশাপাশি স্থানীয় নেতৃত্ব এবং ওই ওয়ার্ডের বাসীন্দারা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। বালুরঘাট পৌরসভার বাইশ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের পৌর প্রতিনিধি প্রদীপ্তা চক্রবর্তী জানিয়েছেন – বাইশ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের আরো উন্নয়ন এবং ওই ওয়ার্ডের বাসীন্দাদের বিভিন্ন সমস্যার সমাধানের পাশাপাশি উন্নত পরিষেবা দেবার লক্ষ্যেই আজ এই “আমাদের পাড়া, আমাদের সমাধান” কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করা হয়।

বর্তমান জীবন পাল্টাচ্ছে মহিষবাথানের মুখা শিল্প

দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর: দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার কুশমণ্ডি ব্লকের মহিষবাথান এলাকার মুখাশিল্প রাজ্য সহ সমগ্র দেশ জুড়ে জনপ্রিয়। দিন দিন জনপ্রিয় মুখা শিল্পের চাহিদা বাড়ছে। জেলার এই কুশমন্ডি ব্লকের দেউল গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েতে অবস্থিত মহিষবাথান এলাকায়। বিগত কয়েক বছরে এই মুখা শিল্পের ওপর ভিত্তি করেই জীবন জীবিকা গড়ে উঠেছে নতুন করে বহু মানুষের। জানা গিয়েছে, অতীত কালে বছরের বিশেষ সময়ে ধান কাটার জন্য রাজবংশী সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষজন বিশেষ পুজো আয়োজন করতেন। সেই সময়ই বিভিন্ন দেবদেবীর মুখা পরিধান করে গম্ভীরা নৃত্য করা হত। প্রাচীন এই রীতির কথা মাথায় রেখে মহিষবাথান এলাকার মানুষজন বংশ পরম্পরায় বহু যুগ ধরে মুখ্য তৈরি করে আসছেন। বর্তমানে আধুনিক যুগের সাথে পাল্লা দিয়ে মুখার জনপ্রিয়তা বাড়ছে। ইতিমধ্যেই জেলা ছাড়িয়ে রাজ্য এবং রাজ্য ছাড়িয়ে বিভিন্ন দেশে দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার কুশমণ্ডির মহিষবাথানের মুখা পৌঁছে গেছে। রাজ্য সরকারের উদ্যোগে মহিষবাথান গ্রামীণ হস্ত শিল্প কেন্দ্রে এলাকার মানুষজন মুখা তৈরির প্রশিক্ষণ থেকে শুরু করে সারা বছর তৈরি করা মুখা বিক্রির সব রকম সাহায্য পেয়ে থাকেন। এই বিষয়ে, মহিষবাথান এলাকার মুখা শিল্পী সাগুলাল সরকার বলেন, “মুখা শিল্পের উপর ভিত্তি করেই বহু বছর ধরে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করছি। রাজ্য সরকারের আয়োজিত বিভিন্ন মেলা থেকে শুরু করে দেশের বিভিন্ন বাজারে এমনকি পার্শ্ববর্তী বিভিন্ন দেশেও আমাদের তৈরি মুখা পৌঁছে যায়। আর সেকারণে দিন দিন মুখা শিল্পের জনপ্রিয়তা বেড়েই চলেছে”। উল্লেখ্য, বর্তমান রাজ্য সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে মুখা শিল্পের উন্নয়নে প্রথম থেকেই বিশেষ জোর দেওয়া হয়েছে। মুখ্য শিল্পীদের প্রশিক্ষণ থেকে শুরু করে শিল্প কেন্দ্রের উন্নয়নে একাধিক পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করেছেন রাজ্যের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর উদ্যোগে কুশমণ্ডি মহিষবাথান গ্রামীণ হস্তশিল্প কেন্দ্রর ভবনটি ইতিমধ্যেই দোতালা করা হয়েছে।

কুশমণ্ডি মহিষবাথান গ্রামীণ হস্তশিল্পের সম্পাদক পরেশ চন্দ্র সরকারের বলেন, “বর্তমানে মুখ শিল্পের ওপর ভিত্তি করেই শিল্পীদের জীবনযাত্রার মান পাল্টে গেছে। আমরা আশা করছি আগামীতে আরও উন্নতি হবে শিল্পীদের। রাজ্য সরকারের উদ্যোগে আন্তর্জাতিক ২টি নামি সংস্থার সাথে চুক্তি হয়েছে। জনপ্রিয় এই মুখা শিল্প বিদেশেও রপ্তানি হচ্ছে সামগ্রীক ভাবে আরও ব্যাপক পরিসরে বিদেশে রপ্তানি হবে খুব শীঘ্রই বলে আমরা আশাবাদী”। একটা সময় প্রত্যন্ত এই এলাকার মানুষজনের দুবেলা খাদ্য সংস্থান করতেই হিমশিম অবস্থা হত। তবে রাজ্য সরকার পাশে থাকায় মুখাশিল্পের ওপর ভিত্তি করেই জীবনযাত্রার মান উন্নয়ন হয়েছে বিগত কয়েক বছরে। সর্বোপরি বলাবাহুল্য দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুর জেলার কুশমন্ডির মহিষবাথানে মুখা শিল্পের সাথে যুক্ত মানুষজনের জীবন পাল্টাচ্ছে।

জটিল ফুসফুস সংক্রমণ থেকে আরোগ্য, মণিপাল হাসপাতাল মুকুন্দপুরের চিকিৎসায় সুস্থ আলিপুরদুয়ারের ৫ বছরের শিশু / Little boy from Alipurduar makes miraculous recovery after major lung surgery at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur.

কলকাতা, ৩০ অক্টোবর ২০২৫: আলিপুরদুয়ারের ৫ বছর বয়সী আর্য সাহা (নাম পরিবর্তিত) বড় ফুসফুসের সংক্রমণ থেকে সম্পূর্ণ সেরে উঠেছে মণিপাল হাসপাতাল, মুকুন্দপুরে। ভারতজুড়ে সুপরিচিত মণিপাল হসপিটালস গ্রুপের এই ইউনিটে আর্যর চিকিৎসা পরিচালনা করেন ডা. শুভাশিস সাহা, কনসালট্যান্ট –পেডিয়াট্রিক সার্জন, এবং ডা. সায়ন্তন ভৌমিক, অ্যাসোসিয়েট কনসালট্যান্ট –পেডিয়াট্রিক পালমোনোলজি। আর্য প্রায় এক সপ্তাহ ধরে জ্বরে ভুগছিল এবং শ্বাস নিতে কষ্ট হচ্ছিল। প্রথমে তাকে উত্তরবঙ্গের এক স্থানীয় হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়। কিন্তু অবস্থার অবনতি ঘটলে তাকে মণিপাল হাসপাতাল, মুকুন্দপুরে স্থানান্তরিত করা হয়। ভর্তি হওয়ার সময় তার শ্বাসযন্ত্র খুবই সংকটজনক অবস্থায় ছিল, কারণ সংক্রমিত তরল পদার্থ ডান দিকের ফুসফুসকে চেপে ধরেছিল, ফলে ঠিকমতো শ্বাস নিতে পারছিল না। দ্রুত চিকিৎসা শুরু করে ডাক্তাররা সিদ্ধান্ত নেন আধুনিক ভিডিও-অ্যাসিস্টেড থোরাকোস্কোপিক সার্জারি (VATS) করার, যাতে সংক্রমিত পুঁজ বের করে ফুসফুস আবার স্বাভাবিকভাবে কাজ করতে পারে। অস্ত্রোপচারের পর আর্যকে প্রায় ১০ দিন ভেন্টিলেটরে রাখা হয়, কারণ প্রথম দিকে ফুসফুস পুরোপুরি প্রসারিত হচ্ছিল না এবং বাতাস ঢুকে “নিউমোথোরাক্স” সমস্যা দেখা দেয়। পেডিয়াট্রিক ইনটেনসিভ কেয়ার টিমের তত্ত্বাবধানে—ডা. সৌমেন মেউর ও ডা. মনিদীপা দত্তের নেতৃত্বে—নিয়মিত ফুসফুসের যত্ন, সংক্রমণ নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও ফিজিওথেরাপির মাধ্যমে আর্য ধীরে ধীরে সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠে। শেষে ভেন্টিলেটর থেকে মুক্ত হয়ে আর্য সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ অবস্থায় বাড়ি ফেরে।

ডা. শুভাশিস সাহা বলেন, “শিশুদের এম্পাইমা খুব দ্রুত বিপজ্জনক রূপ নিতে পারে, তাই সময়মতো অস্ত্রোপচার অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আর্যর ক্ষেত্রে দ্রুত VATS সার্জারি করার ফলে সংক্রমণ দূর হয় এবং ফুসফুস আবার স্বাভাবিকভাবে কাজ করতে শুরু করে। শিশু সার্জারি কেবল প্রযুক্তিগত নয়, এটি মানসিক যত্নের বিষয়ও বটে। আমরা প্রতিটি ধাপে অভিভাবকদের পাশে থেকেছি এবং তাদের আশ্বস্ত করেছি। শিশুটিকে আবার হাসিখুশি অবস্থায় দেখতে পারা আমাদের জন্য সবচেয়ে বড় সাফল্য।”

ডা. সায়ন্তন ভৌমিক বলেন, “যখন কোনো শিশু এত গুরুতর ফুসফুসের সংক্রমণ নিয়ে আসে, তখন এক মুহূর্তও দেরি করা যায় না। আর্যর ফুসফুস পুঁজে ভরে গিয়েছিল, ফলে শ্বাস নেওয়া প্রায় অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়েছিল। আমরা দ্রুত VATS সার্জারি করি, যাতে ফুসফুস থেকে পুঁজ বের হয় এবং শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস স্বাভাবিক হয়। চিকিৎসার সময় অক্সিজেনের মাত্রা, সংক্রমণ নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও ওষুধের ব্যবহার অত্যন্ত সতর্কভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করা হয়। এই কেসটি প্রমাণ করে, সময়মতো সার্জারি ও টিমওয়ার্কের মাধ্যমে একটি শিশুর জীবন বাঁচানো সম্ভব।”

আর্যর মা বলেন, “আমার ছেলেকে টানা সাত দিন ধরে জ্বরে ভুগতে ও শ্বাস নিতে কষ্ট করতে দেখা খুব ভয়ংকর অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল। স্থানীয় চিকিৎসায় কোনও উন্নতি না দেখে আমরা মুকুন্দপুরের মণিপাল হাসপাতালে আসি। এখানকার ডাক্তার ও নার্সরা খুব যত্নবান ছিলেন, সব কিছু ধৈর্য ধরে বুঝিয়ে বলেছেন এবং সব সময় পাশে থেকেছেন। আজ আমার ছেলে একদম সুস্থ, খেলাধুলায় মগ্ন। আমরা চিরদিন তাঁদের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞ থাকব।” এই ঘটনা মণিপাল হাসপাতাল মুকুন্দপুরের শিশু চিকিৎসা, শ্বাসযন্ত্র ও ইনটেনসিভ কেয়ারের সমন্বিত দক্ষতার এক উজ্জ্বল উদাহরণ, যা দেখায়—সময়মতো চিকিৎসা ও নিবেদিত দলগত প্রচেষ্টায় সবচেয়ে জটিল শিশুরোগও সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ করা সম্ভব।

Kolkata, 30^th October 2025: Five-year-old Arya Saha (name changed), a resident of Alipurduar, has made a remarkable recovery at Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, a unit of India’s leading healthcare network, Manipal Hospitals Group, after being treated for a massive right-sided pleural empyema (a serious infection marked by the accumulation of pus in the space between the lungs and the chest wall). The case was managed under the expert supervision of Dr. Subhasis Saha, Consultant – Paediatric Surgery, Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, and Dr. Sayantan Bhowmick, Associate Consultant, Paediatric Pulmonology, Manipal Hospital Mukundapur. Arya had been experiencing high fever and severe breathing difficulties for nearly a week before being admitted to a local hospital in North Bengal. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, for specialized paediatric care. At admission, Arya was in severe respiratory distress, as the infected fluid was compressing his right lung and making breathing extremely difficult. After rapid stabilisation, the hospital team decided on early Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive procedure to drain the infection and allow the lung to expand.

Following the operation, Arya required mechanical ventilation (a breathing machine) for about ten days because the right lung initially failed to fully re-expand, and a pneumothorax (air leak in the lung) developed. Under the vigilant supervision of the Paediatric Intensive Care team, led by Dr Saumen Meur, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Intensive Care, along with Dr Monideepa Dutta, Consultant Paediatric Intensive Care, the precise ventilatory strategies, infection control, and lung-protective physiotherapy were implemented. Gradually, the lung expanded, the air leak resolved, and Arya was successfully taken off the ventilator and discharged in excellent health.

While discussing the case, Dr. Subhasis Saha, Consultant – Paediatric Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, said, “Empyema in children can progress rapidly and, if not treated in time, can become life-threatening. In Arya’s case, early surgical intervention through minimally invasive Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) was vital to remove the infection and help his lung expand again. Paediatric surgery is not just about precision; it’s also about understanding the fear and anxiety that families go through when their child is unwell. Our team worked closely with the parents at every step to ensure they felt supported and informed. Seeing the child recover, smile, and go back to his normal, playful self after such a critical illness is the most fulfilling outcome we could hope for.”

Dr Sayantan Bhowmick, Associate Consultant, Paediatric Pulmonology, Manipal Hospital Mukundapur, who guided Arya’s respiratory care, said, “When a child comes in with such a serious lung infection, every minute counts. Arya’s lungs were filled with pus, which made it very hard for him to breathe. Our first step was to remove the pus through a minimally invasive surgery called VATS, so the lung could start working again. While he was on the breathing machine, we carefully monitored his oxygen levels and used medications to treat infections and reduce inflammation. We aimed to minimise airway pressures, optimise drainage and antibiotic therapy, and support the lung’s natural healing process with structured physiotherapy. This case is a strong reminder that teamwork, timely surgery, and round-the-clock care can make all the difference in saving a child’s life.”

Arya’s mother said, “Watching my little boy gasping for breath and burning with high fever for seven relentless days was nothing short of a nightmare. After trying treatment locally and seeing no improvement, we had to travel all the way to Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, hoping for specialized care. From the moment we arrived, the doctors and nurses were compassionate, calm, and extremely thorough, explaining every step and ensuring Arya was comfortable.
