Blue Tigresses aim for winning start in SAFF Women’s C’ship against Maldives

Margao, Goa, May 24, 2026: India will begin their SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 Group B campaign against Maldives at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 19:30 IST, with the hosts looking to reclaim the title they last won in 2019. The match will be live-streamed on FanCode. Entry to the stadium is free for fans. It will mark the first time the Blue Tigresses will play a match in Goa. Ranked 69th in the FIFA Rankings, India are the highest-ranked side in the tournament and will start as firm favourites against Maldives, who are placed 167th. The Blue Tigresses carry a dominant head-to-head record into the contest, having won seven of their eight meetings against Maldives while drawing the other. India have scored 68 goals in those encounters and conceded just once.

Crispin Chettri’s side will hope to make a strong statement after their third-place finish in the FIFA Series 2026 Kenya, as the focus now shifts towards regional supremacy once again. Chettri believes the competition has become far more challenging over the years and stressed the importance of beginning preparations for future continental goals. “It is quite tricky for us because SAFF Championship is getting competitive day by day. Being hosts of the tournament, fans will certainly expect a bit from us. We are a mixed bag with experienced as well as young players. Also, the Indian Women’s League has just ended. So players have recovered and are fit,” said Chettri during the pre-tournament press conference on Sunday. “The overall target is to qualify for the next Asian Cup so the preparations start from now,” the coach added.

India possess quality across all areas of the pitch. In defence, youngsters Astam Oraon and Nirmala Devi Phanjoubam, recently named IWL’s Best Defender, are expected to play key roles in keeping the backline organised. In midfield, Aveka Singh, who scored her first India goal last month, and the experienced Sangita Basfore, are among a few who will look to control the tempo of the match. Going forward, India have an experienced attacking unit featuring the likes of Grace Dangmei, Pyari Xaxa, and Soumya Guguloth. Manisha Kalyan, who plays in Peru, is yet to join the squad since the FIFA International Match Window does not begin until June 1.

Grace Dangmei, who accompanied Chettri to the press conference, said the team had learned valuable lessons from March’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup and would look to apply them in the SAFF Women’s Championship. “It was a learning experience for us in Australia. We understood where we need to improve and hopefully we can implement those learnings in this tournament. We will try to go all the way,” she said. Maldives coach Mohamed Sobah acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side against the hosts. “We have huge respect for India. We know that they are going to press. So we will try to play smartly and try to break their attack,” he said. Bangladesh are the third and final team in Group B, while Group A contains Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. The top two teams from each group will make it to the semi-finals, which will be held on June 3. The final will take place on June 6 at 18:30.

AIFF unhappy after players asked to return from national camp

The AIFF strongly denies the reports that appeared in the media regarding the release of players from Mohun Bagan SG to the Senior National Men’s team for the Unity Cup. “A club official has been quoted in the media that Mohun Bagan SG had written to the AIFF six days ago that the Federation should take responsibility if players get injured outside the FIFA window and alleged that we did not respond,” said AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan. “There is no such letter. The AIFF has written four letters to all clubs since April 10 regarding India’s participation in the Unity Cup in London. “Another misinformation given by the said MBSG official is that the AIFF does not take care of the medical expenses of the players if they get injured. In the 2025-26 season alone, we have spent almost ₹15 lakhs on the treatment of injuries sustained by players of all senior and age group national teams, and their rehab thereafter,” said Satyanarayan. “The welfare of our national team players is of paramount importance to the AIFF, and if any player gets injured when they are with us, the AIFF never shies away from bearing their medical and rehab bills.”

The AIFF Deputy Secretary General further went on to narrate how the club had cooperated throughout the biometric VISA process, only to make a U-turn at the last moment. “The dates of the event were mentioned in all subsequent letters, along with the dates for biometric tests for players, which were fixed as per the club’s convenience,” he further stated. “The Mohun Bagan SG players attended the biometric test. Obviously, this was done with the club’s knowledge as we had written to them.” Two more emails regarding details of the event were shared with respective clubs, including Mohun Bagan SG. All such emails remained unacknowledged by the club. Finally, on the night of May 20, AIFF received an email from the MBSG stating that their players will be released “during the FIFA window, and that AIFF may coordinate with the players likewise. While seven MBSG players were called up, six joined the camp in Bengaluru on May 22. One player was injured.

The AIFF Deputy Secretary General said, “The players contacted our national team manager Mr. Velu and said they had approached the management, who agreed to them joining the camp. These six players joined the camp on May 22 and also had a recovery session in the evening. However, they were ordered next morning by the club in their players’ Whatsapp group, to not join the national team during their training session in the evening, that the club ordered them not to play outside the FIFA International Window. The head coach Mr. Khalid Jamil and manager Mr. Velu spoke to the players in question and asked them what they wanted to do. After a quick huddle together, the players informed the national team management that their club had instructed them to not play or train outside the FIFA International Window. Some were emotional, as they made arrangements to leave the camp.”

AIFF’s Director of National Teams, Mr. Subrata Paul stated, “It is deeply unfortunate that players who had already completed their biometric VISA procedures over a month ago were unable to travel at such a late stage. We fully understand that clubs operate under their own set of pressures and commitments, and we remain respectful of that. “However, given that all concerned parties had been informed of this tournament as early as April 10, an earlier communication of any reservations would have allowed us the time to make the necessary arrangements and ensure no player missed out on an important opportunity. What saddens us most is the wider impact, not only on the players directly involved, but also on those who might otherwise have been called up in their place,” said Paul. “We have faced similar challenges in the past in the CAFA Nations Cup, and with our U23 national team. Our only hope is that, together, we can find better ways to navigate such moments so that Indian football, and every player who dreams of wearing the national colours, never has to pay the price,” he said.

THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

10 April: First Communication

The AIFF wrote to Mohun Bagan Super Giant for the first time regarding player requirements for the upcoming international programme.

23 April: Biometric Appointment Confirmed

A second email was sent to the club, formally confirming the scheduling of Mohun Bagan players at the VFS Centre in Kolkata for biometric formalities, and requesting the club’s cooperation in releasing the players for this process.

May first week: Tri-Nation Schedule Shared

All clubs were informed of the tri-nation tournament in Tajikistan via a third communication. The departure schedule was shared, with the squad departing from Bangalore on the 24th.

Post-ISL Final Round Draw: Reporting Instructions Issued

Following confirmation of ISL final round fixtures, the AIFF notified clubs that players were required to report in Bangalore on the 22nd. Seven MBSG players were included in the squad; Suhail Bhatt was named as a reserve.

Night Before the ISL Final: Club Raises Objection

For the first time, MBSG communicated that players could only be released during an official FIFA international window — an objection raised only at this late hour, despite weeks of prior correspondence.

Day after ISL Final (May 22)

Players arrive in Bengaluru for national camp.

Day before departure to London (May 23)

Players are ordered by MBSG to not join training session, and to leave national camp.

Shillong Lajong secures second spot in IFL 2025-26 with a brilliant win over champions Diamond Harbour

Diamond Harbour FC – 0                                                                                      Shillong Lajong FC – 3 (Everbrightson Sana 30’, Gladdy Kharbuli 45’+2, Phrangki Buam 54’)

Kalyani, Saturday, May 23, 2026: The Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 season came to a thrilling conclusion as Shillong Lajong FC secured second place in the standings with an outstanding 3-0 victory over champions Diamond Harbour FC at the Kalyani Stadium in Kalyani on Saturday, May 23, 2026. Shillong Lajong headed into the break with a two-goal advantage courtesy of strikes from Everbrightson Sana in the 30th minute and Gladdy Nelcen Kharbuli in stoppage time of the first half. The visitors capped off their superb display in the 54th minute when Phrangki Buam added the third goal. Diamond Harbour finished the campaign as champions of the Indian Football League 2025-26 with 29 points, while Shillong Lajong ended the season just one point behind in second place with 28 points.

Individual Awards

Best Goalkeeper: Ashish Sibi (Dempo SC)

Golden Boot: Marcus Joseph (Dempo SC)

Most Valuable Player: Phrangki Buam (Shillong Lajong FC)

With the title already secured, Kibu Vicuña fielded a heavily rotated squad for the final game of the season. The match began in an open-ended fashion, with both sides adopting an attacking approach from the opening whistle. Luka Majcen found the back of the net in just the second minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Girik Khosla saw his left-footed effort drift narrowly wide of the post. The champions gradually settled into the contest and continued to threaten going forward, making effective use of the pace of Bryce Miranda and Girik on the wings. Left back Lalremruata hit the post with a thunderous left-footer from a long distance before the 25th-minute mark. The visitors gradually grew into the contest and began to impose their typical style of play. Phrangki Buam and Figo Syndai both tried their luck from outside the box, but their efforts sailed over the crossbar. The Red Dragons capitalised on this positive spell to take the lead at the half-hour mark.

The visitors worked the corner kick short to Damaitphang Lyngdoh, whose looping cross towards the far post caused problems for the defence. Diamond Harbour goalkeeper Susnata Malik failed to gather the ball cleanly, allowing Rudra Ved to head it back into a dangerous area. Everbrightson Sana reacted quickest and nodded the ball home from four yards out into an empty net, with the defenders rooted to the spot. Diamond Harbour continued to press high and looked to find the equaliser quickly. Sunday Ofolabi’s right-footed effort from the edge of the box at the end of a corner kick whistled past the right post, and in stoppage time of the first half, Hugo Díaz’s header from another corner kick was acrobatically saved by Ranit Sarkar. The visitors doubled their advantage in the closing moments of the first half. Ephraim Lalremtluanga played the ball into open space for Phrangki Buam, who calmly rolled it into the path of Gladdy Kharbuli. The midfielder then produced a wonderful curling effort from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of keeping it out.

The second half began with Diamond Harbour wasting a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit. Bryce Miranda delivered an inviting cross into the box for Luka Majcen, but the Slovenian scuffed his effort and sent the ball wide of the post. The home side gave away the ball in their own half on multiple occasions and were punished by Shillong Lajong on the fourth mistake. Phrangki Buam scored his eighth goal of the season with a brilliant finish after being set up by Gladdy. The Red Dragons looked outstanding going forward, repeatedly splitting open the defence with their quick passing combinations and constant movement through the middle and down the flanks. Everbrightson Sana came close to scoring his second goal of the game after being released from the halfway line by a brilliant low pass from right-back Kitboklang Khyriem. The striker attempted to chip the ball over the advancing goalkeeper, but Susnata Malik managed to get a fingertip to it and prevent it from finding the back of the net.

At the other end, Hugo Díaz and substitute Sahil Harijan both came close, with their efforts flashing past the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper. There was still time for Shillong Lajong to strike the crossbar in stoppage time, as substitute Jakob Vanlalhimpuia saw his left-footed effort crash against the woodwork and bounce back into play. In the end, Shillong Lajong FC capped off their IFL season with a brilliant performance against the eventual champions, Diamond Harbour FC.

Champions Diamond Harbour face Shillong Lajong in the IFL 2025-26 final

Kalyani, Friday, May 22, 2026: Champions Diamond Harbour FC will face Shillong Lajong FC in the final fixture of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 at the Kalyani Stadium on Saturday, May 23. The kick-off is scheduled for 18:30 IST. The match will be broadcast live on DD Sports and Sony Sports Network, with streaming available on Waves and Sony LIV. Diamond Harbour heads into the contest as the newly crowned champions of the Indian Football League 2025-26, having secured the title following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Dempo SC in Goa last Sunday. Shillong Lajong, meanwhile, arrive in Kalyani aiming to finish in second place after a high-scoring 4-2 victory over Rajasthan United. As per the current standings, Diamond Harbour FC leads the pack with an unassailable 29 points from 13 matches. Shillong Lajong sits in second place with 25 points from the same number of games, level on points with Sreenidi Deccan but ahead on the table.

The previous meeting between the two sides in the league stage on March 14 ended in a tight 2-1 victory for Diamond Harbour. However, Shillong have proved themselves to be formidable opponents, currently boasting an impressive unbeaten run in their last six matches. Despite already securing the title, Diamond Harbour head coach Kibu Vicuña will demand that his side maintain their high standards in front of their home fans, particularly to finish the season strongly and extend their unbeaten run to 12 matches. Reflecting on the club’s remarkable journey, Vicuña expressed immense pride: “It’s a fantastic feeling to be a part of this unit. So proud, happy, and very satisfied for the whole DHFC family and enjoying the way especially,” said Vicuña. “Not only because at the end we got our objective, which was, you know, a dream at the beginning. And the dream came true, and we are in the ISL.”

The Spanish tactician also highlighted the underlying philosophy that drove their success. “The vision that they had from the beginning was not only to participate. The vision was to win any tournament that we were playing. This sporting ambition and the vision that DHFC had from the beginning are one of the keys to their success.” Regarding their approach for Saturday’s finale, Vicuña was unequivocal. “The same approach as all the games. Try to play our game, be better than the opponent, and create more chances than the opponent. Try to be an offensive team, fight for every single ball, every single challenge.” The home side will look to their potent attacking trio to break down the Shillong defence. Antonio Moyano and Hugo Díaz, both with four goals to their names this campaign, remain central to Diamond Harbour’s creative play. Moyano also leads the team with four assists. Up front, Luka Majcen (four goals) and Jobby Justin (three assists) will be tasked with converting chances against a Shillong backline that has conceded 12 goals this season.

Diamond Harbour forward Girik Khosla echoed his coach’s sentiments regarding the team’s motivation for the final game: “It will be a positive approach.” Personally and from the team’s point of view, we want to finish at a top level,” Khosla stated. “We will go for all three points. Some players are still hungry to play. We will go all out.” When asked about the key to their dominant campaign, he added, “I think unity.” As the coach said, it is the vision. The vision of the team and the unity of the team.” For Shillong Lajong, the objective is clear: secure three points to guarantee a second-place finish and potentially put an end to Diamond Harbour’s dominance. Head coach Birendra Thapa expressed a strong desire to close the campaign strongly. “As you know, the championship is already decided, but, for me, we want to finish on a good note,” said Thapa. “We have not decided whether we are second or third, but we’ll go all out for the match tomorrow. If we get second position, it’s also a good result for us.”

Thapa also spoke highly of his squad’s achievement this season, playing with an all-Indian squad. “I think the boys have done tremendously well this season despite playing with an all-Indian squad. The boys have done very well. I’m very proud of my boys and my players, and tomorrow’s match will be important as well. From our side, we’ll go all out for the win.” Reflecting on guiding the team to what is arguably their best-ever finish, Thapa added, “It’s a great sign. For me, from the time I’ve taken charge of the team, the club has faith in me. I really thank the club for allowing me to lead the team. The boys have really done well, and it’s a great achievement. I think this is the best position the club has ever achieved.” The visitors possess an attacking threat of their own, having averaged nearly two goals per game. Centre-forward Everbrightson Sana Mylliempdah and attacking midfielder Phrangki Buam have been the standout performers for the Red Dragons, netting four goals each.

Forward Treimiki Lamurong, with three goals this campaign, reflected on the mood within the Shillong dressing room: “As of now, the feeling we have in our team is very good. Very good feeling. Everyone is happy, but unfortunately, we didn’t win this championship. But the feeling is still good,” Lamurong shared. He also took a moment to express his gratitude: “I just want to thank all the fans out there who have supported us since the start of the season till now. Without you guys, we would not have reached second place. I just want to say thank you to everyone for your support.” With Diamond Harbour looking to celebrate their title triumph with a home victory and Shillong Lajong aiming to secure the runners-up spot, tomorrow’s clash at the Kalyani Stadium promises to be an entertaining encounter between the league’s top two sides to finish the season.

Mumbai City FC seal third place with victory over nine-man Punjab FC

Punjab FC – 0           Mumbai City FC – 2 (Hmingthanmawia 80’, Vikram Partap Singh 90+11’)

New Delhi, Thursday, May 21, 2026: Mumbai City FC secured a 2-0 victory over Punjab FC in a tense final round fixture of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday, May 21, 2026. Goals from Hmingthanmawia (Valpuia) and substitute Vikram Partap Singh, combined with two red cards for Punjab FC, ensured the Islanders ended their campaign strongly on a night charged with pressure and title implications. The victory ensured Mumbai City FC finished their campaign in third place with 25 points, while Punjab FC ended the season fifth with 22 points. Despite the defeat, Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh was named Player of the Match for his outstanding display between the posts. With the final round unfolding simultaneously across the country, both teams approached the contest with urgency and intensity. Punjab FC enjoyed the better of the early possession, with Samir Zeljković orchestrating play through midfield and linking effectively with the attacking line.

The hosts attempted to break down Mumbai City’s defence through the flanks, but the visitors remained disciplined at the back. Hmingthanmawia produced an important interception to deny Muhammed Uvais, while Punjab center-back Pablo Santos’ sliding challenge earlier had prevented a dangerous Mumbai City counterattack. Punjab created promising openings without finding the decisive final touch. In the eighth minute, a lofted delivery from Ricky Shabong found Shami Singamayum inside the box, but the winger took one touch too many, and the opportunity faded away. At the other end, Mumbai City threatened sporadically through captain Lallianzuala Chhangte, though Pablo and Bijoy V repeatedly stood firm in defence. The game developed into a tightly contested midfield battle, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances despite enjoying spells of possession. Samir Zeljković saw an effort blocked after a neat combination involving Shami and Effiong Nsungusi Jr., while Punjab goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh combined brilliantly with Pablo in stoppage time of the first half to deny Chhangte from close range.

Punjab nearly ended the half in front when Muhammed Uvais delivered a teasing cross into the box, but Nsungusi Jr. headed over the bar as the teams went into the break level at 0-0. The second half resumed with greater tempo, though clear chances remained limited in the opening exchanges. Mumbai City began to grow into the game, with Joni Kauko and Brandon Fernandes helping the Islanders control possession more effectively. Pereyra Díaz produced a sharp move in the 58th minute, dancing into the box before producing a clever backheel into the centre, only for Punjab defenders to react quickly and clear the danger. Moments later, Chhangte tested Arshdeep Singh with a controlled effort, but the Punjab goalkeeper gathered comfortably.

Punjab responded with a strong spell of pressure around the hour mark. Dani Ramírez combined cleverly with substitute Bede Osuji to release Nsungusi Jr., but Mumbai goalkeeper Rehenesh Paramba rushed off his line to clear the danger. From the resulting corner, Nsungusi Jr. flicked the ball towards the far post, where Osuji’s left foot drifted narrowly wide. The hosts continued to threaten through Dani Ramírez and Nsungusi Jr., but Mumbai City’s backline, led by Nuno Reis, produced crucial interventions to keep the contest goalless. The turning point arrived in the 68th minute when Punjab substitute Leon Augustine was shown a straight red card for bringing down Jorge Ortiz as the last man. Reduced to 10 men, Punjab were forced deeper as Mumbai City intensified their pressure. Arshdeep Singh then produced two outstanding saves to keep Punjab alive. First, he brilliantly tipped Jorge Ortiz’s powerful effort over the crossbar, before denying Pereyra Díaz moments later with another sharp stop.

Mumbai City’s pressure finally paid off in the 80th minute. A quickly taken set-piece led to Akash Mishra curling a precise cross from the left towards the far side, where right-back Valpuia arrived unmarked and finished confidently to break the deadlock. Punjab’s frustrations boiled over late in the game. In the 90th minute, Pramveer was shown a straight red card following a series of heated challenges involving him, Pereyra Díaz, and Zothanpuia, reducing the hosts to nine men. The Islanders sealed the result in the dying seconds of the match. In the eleventh minute of injury time, substitute Noufal PN burst down the left before Vikram Partap Singh bundled the ball home after a scramble inside the box to make it 2-0. The forward was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card during his celebration.

Jamshedpur and Odisha share spoils in their final game of the season

Jamshedpur FC – 0                                    Odisha FC – 0

Jamshedpur, Thursday, May 21, 2026: Jamshedpur FC and Odisha FC played out a fiercely contested 0-0 draw in their final Indian Super League 2025-26 encounter at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Thursday, May 21, 2026. With this season-ending draw, Jamshedpur FC finished their campaign in sixth place with 22 points, while Odisha FC concluded their season at the bottom half of the table in 12th position with 11 points. Despite numerous attacking opportunities and a persistent offensive display from the hosts, neither side could find the back of the net as the respective defences held firm. It was only because of the quality goalkeeping of 24-year-old Manas Dubey that the scoreline remained 0-0 until the regulation 90 minutes, and he was deservedly adjudged the Player of the Match for producing a couple of brilliant saves.

Jamshedpur FC looked like scoring from the moment both teams arrived on the ground, making it one-way traffic as the Red Miners dominated the game completely at The Furnace. The match began with immediate aggression, setting a physical tone from the opening whistle with a foul by Jamshedpur FC forward Raphael Eric Messi Bouli in the very first minute. The hosts quickly settled into their rhythm and created a massive chance in the seventh minute. Messi Bouli received the ball on the edge of the area, created some space for himself, and looked to curl a left-footed shot into the bottom corner, but Dubey got down well to parry it away. Just two minutes later, in the ninth minute, Sanan Mohammed found himself in space on the left flank. The winger ran inward and tried to curl one into the far corner, but it ended up being a comfortable catch for the Odisha FC goalkeeper.

The combative nature of the game continued as Moirangthem Thoiba Singh committed a foul in the 10th minute, disrupting the home side’s momentum. Jamshedpur FC defender Pratik Chaudhari received the first yellow card of the match in the 18th minute for a rash challenge. Odisha FC midfielder Hitesh Sharma and Jamshedpur FC’s Rosenberg Gabriel were also pulled up for fouls as the midfield battle intensified around the half-hour mark. The Men of Steel continued to press for an opener, with Stephen Eze missing a header from the box before they created an unbelievable opportunity shortly after. Eze headed the delivery across the face of the goal, but Sanan failed to connect from the cross, missing a clear-cut chance in a one-on-one situation from point-blank range. The forward got his feet in a muddle and let the ball go right through them while standing barely a yard out from the line in an incredible miss.

Sanan was excellent again on the left wing in the 39th minute, dancing past his defender before being tripped at the edge of the box by Thoiba Singh. The ensuing free-kick pinballed dangerously inside the box before the desperate visitors eventually cleared it. Just before the break, Dubey produced another spellbinding save in the 43rd minute to deny a spectacular long-ranger from Lalriathpuia Chawngthu. Odisha FC kept numbers at the back to hold off the Red Miners, and the Juggernauts somehow kept the clean sheet as Dubey produced crucial stops to ensure the first half concluded deadlocked at 0-0. Jamshedpur FC made an early change at the start of the second half, bringing on Pronay Halder to replace the booked Chaudhari in the 48th minute.

Attack after attack continued in the second half as the Men of Steel were still hunting for that elusive goal, launching a relentless barrage that never stopped. The second half resumed with similar intensity, as Nikola Stojanovic and Rahul Praveen both committed early fouls. Messi Bouli remained a constant threat for the hosts, registering another shot on target in the 54th minute, but he was unable to break the deadlock. Looking to inject fresh energy, Jamshedpur FC made a double substitution in the 61st minute, introducing Ritwik Das and Rei Tachikawa for Gabriel and Stojanovic. Odisha FC responded shortly after, bringing on Subham Bhattacharya for Saviour Gama in the 63rd minute to bolster their backline. The tactical fouls continued to mount, with Ritwik and Sanan committing infractions to halt the visitors’ counter-attacks.

Against the run of play, Jamshedpur FC defender Sarthak Golui had to be extremely alert, brilliantly blocking consecutive attempts from the visitors. The match became increasingly ill-tempered in the final twenty minutes, with the referee reaching for his pocket frequently. Odisha FC forward Rahim Ali received a yellow card in the 70th minute, followed closely by a booking for their goalkeeper, Dubey, in the 72nd minute. The visitors turned to their bench again in the 79th minute, introducing Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak and Suhair Vadakkepeedika for Tejas Krishna and K Lalrinfela. Suhair proved to be the absolute game-changer for Odisha FC in the second half. After his arrival on the pitch, the Juggernauts finally created a couple of openings, having had absolutely none in the first half.

Tensions flared in the 82nd minute, resulting in dual yellow cards for Jamshedpur FC’s Madih Talal and Odisha FC’s Rohit Kumar following a heated exchange. Jamshedpur FC made their final roll of the dice in the 87th minute, bringing on Lazar Cirkovic and Vincy Barretto for Messi Bouli and Sanan. Despite late fouls from Rohit and Rahim in the dying moments, neither side could fashion a decisive breakthrough. Even with eight minutes of added time, the scores remained the same due to the heroics of the visiting goalkeeper. Jamshedpur FC completely dominated the game with 70 per cent possession and created over 20 chances. However, after the eight minutes of stoppage time had elapsed, the referee blew the final whistle, confirming a hard-fought 0-0 stalemate.

Dempo, Sreenidi Deccan aim to finish the IFL 2025-26 campaign on a high note

Margao, Thursday, May 21, 2026: Dempo SC will face Sreenidi Deccan FC in their final Championship Phase fixture of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Friday, May 22, 2026. The match will kick off at 18:30 IST and will be broadcast live on DD Sports and Sony Sports Network, with streaming available on Waves and Sony LIV. Both teams will head into the contest aiming to conclude their respective campaigns on a positive note after encouraging performances in their previous outings. Dempo’s confidence will be high after the Golden Eagles held league leaders Diamond Harbour FC to a 1-1 draw in their last encounter. Even though the point was enough for Diamond Harbour to seal the title, it was still a commendable performance from Dempo. Head coach Samir Naik expressed satisfaction with his team’s display in the previous fixture while also stressing the importance of building on the positives. “We had chances to finish off that game. So, next game we’ll take it positively, seeing what we have done in the last game,” said Naik.

Defender Mohamed Ali also highlighted the positive atmosphere within the squad heading into the final game of the season. “It was positive from the start, but we have gelled more now. Lately, we are improving much better,” he stated. Morale will also be high in the Sreenidi camp after the Deccan Warriors secured a 2-1 win against Chanmari FC in their previous fixture. Lalromawia and David Castañeda Muñoz found the back of the net in an important victory for the Hyderabad-based outfit. Sreenidi head coach Carlos Vaz Pinto acknowledged the challenge posed by Dempo and praised the Goan side’s progress during the campaign. “For me, Dempo is one of the best teams in the Indian Football League this season. They have quality players. I feel that they are growing game by game. They are better now than before. I feel the expectations for this season are high for them because last season they did well. They have an experienced coach and quality players. So, I feel that this is a difficult opponent,” said Pinto.

Defender Hadi Idrissou, meanwhile, stressed the importance of maintaining focus until the end of the campaign while reflecting on his own performances this season, “I cannot say anything about my performance. I’m a player. I do my job and leave the rest for people to say. I cannot say, ‘Yeah, I know that I’m doing well.’ But for me, nothing is done. I have to go until the end. That’s all I can say,” Idrissou remarked. With both teams set to play their final match of the season, a strong finish will be the primary objective. Dempo, currently sixth in the Championship Phase standings with 14 points, can move up to fifth with a victory, overtaking Chanmari FC, which concluded its campaign with 15 points. Sreenidi, meanwhile, sits third with 25 points, level on points with second-placed Shillong Lajong FC. A win, coupled with Shillong dropping points against Diamond Harbour, could see the Deccan Warriors finish runners-up. Both sides are expected to approach the contest with freedom and attacking intent, given the limited pressure surrounding the fixture. An early goal could therefore play a key role in helping either team establish control.

Dempo will once again look towards the attacking duo of Joseph and Sebastián Gutiérrez to provide the cutting edge in the final third. Joseph is currently the joint-top scorer in the IFL 2025-26 with eight goals and one assist, while Gutiérrez has contributed two goals and two assists. Seigoumang Doungel is expected to play an influential role in the wide areas. At the back, the experienced pairing of José Luis Moreno and Aubin Kouakou will marshal the defence, with Pruthvesh Pednekar and Darell Mascarenhas offering support in the full-back positions. Sreenidi also possesses significant attacking quality, with Muñoz and Fabrice Kah Nkwoh likely to spearhead the frontline. Muñoz has registered five goals and one assist this season, while Nkwoh has contributed three goals and one assist. Lalromawia, fresh from scoring in the previous match, and Brandon Vanlalremdika are expected to provide width and creativity from the flanks. With both teams eager to end their campaigns on a high and carry positive momentum into next season, an entertaining contest could be on the cards in Fatorda.

Mohun Bagan SG look to keep their end of the bargain against SC Delhi

Kolkata, Wednesday, May 20, 2026: The scorching summer heat has wrapped Kolkata in a haze over the last few days, with temperatures soaring and humidity making even the evenings feel exhausting. Yet inside the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Thursday night, the tension is expected to rise even higher as Mohun Bagan Super Giant prepare for one final push in the Indian Super League title race against Sporting Club Delhi. The match will kick off at 19:30, and will be streamed live on FanCode and broadcast on Sony Sports Ten 1. With five clubs – East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mumbai City FC, Punjab FC and Jamshedpur FC – still mathematically in contention heading into the last round of fixtures, the ISL 2026 season is set for a dramatic finish. Mohun Bagan know the equation is no longer entirely in their control, but the defending champions remain alive in the race for a historic third consecutive league crown.

The Mariners currently sit second in the table with 23 points from 12 matches, level with arch-rivals East Bengal but behind on goal difference. The Red-and-Gold Brigade’s goal difference is 18 compared to Bagan’s 13. Sergio Lobera’s side must first defeat Sporting Club Delhi and then hope East Bengal either drop points against Inter Kashi or fail to maintain their superior goal difference. There is another route too. If both Kolkata clubs win, Mohun Bagan would require a 6-0 margin of victory combined with a 1-0 East Bengal win to overturn the goal difference deficit. A draw could also be enough if East Bengal lose and the Mumbai City FC versus Punjab FC clash ends level. Despite the complicated permutations, Lobera insisted his players are focused only on the task in front of them. “We need to believe. To be honest, we are not in the scenario we wanted to be in, but there are still options. When there are options, we need to fight for them. We need to prepare well for the game and we need to win,” the Spaniard said.

The Mohun Bagan coach confirmed that midfielder Lalengmawia Ralte, popularly known as Apuia, is unlikely to feature while Jason Cummings remains doubtful. “About Apuia, most probably he is not going to play because he is not fit for tomorrow’s game. About Jason, we will try in the last training session. It will be difficult, but not impossible. Maybe he can play,” Lobera revealed. Lobera also acknowledged that goal difference could ultimately decide the championship. “The most important thing is to win the game, but it is also in our hands if we can score enough goals. It is not easy, but it is not impossible either,” he said. “If we think this is going to be an easy game and that we are automatically going to score goals, then we are making a big mistake. We need to respect the opponent.”

Mohun Bagan will once again rely heavily on Dimitri Petratos and Jamie Maclaren in attack. Petratos said the squad remains fully motivated despite the pressure surrounding the final day. “We just have to go out there and give everything, focus on ourselves and do our best. We will stick to the plan and go for it,” the Australian said. “The motivation is obviously high. We have an opportunity to go out there and win the league,” he added. “Anything is possible. It is all about having a positive mindset. You never know what can happen in football.” Sporting Club Delhi, meanwhile, arrive with little pressure but plenty of determination to spoil Mohun Bagan’s title hopes. Head coach Tomasz Tchorz believes his team can compete against the defending champions. “We obviously want to win and try to finish in a better position,” Tchorz said. “We know Mohun Bagan need to win and it will be a tough competition. But we have a mix of young and experienced players, we are disciplined and we have trained hard… Everyone is motivated for the match. I think it is possible to beat Mohun Bagan. The game will be open and we will go for a win.” With Kolkata sweating through one of its hottest weeks of the year, the stage is perfectly set for a tense and emotionally charged final night where every goal could reshape the destiny of the ISL trophy.

Punjab FC, Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City FC Battle for ISL Glory

New Delhi & Jamshedpur, Wednesday, May 20, 2026: The Indian Super League 2025-26 season stands on the edge of its defining night. On Thursday, as the final round unfolds simultaneously across the country, ambition, pressure and possibility will collide under the lights in New Delhi and Jamshedpur, where the title race could twist and transform with every passing minute. For Punjab FC, Mumbai City FC and Jamshedpur FC, the margins are extremely fine. Months of consistent performance have brought them to within touching distance of the summit, yet one lapse on the final evening could render their title hope unsuccessful. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC face each other in a contest carrying the intensity of a knockout encounter and the consequence of a title decider. Locked level on 22 points, both clubs enter the night with the same understanding — they must win to stay in contention for the title. Anything less could extinguish their hopes before the final whistle has even sounded elsewhere.

Punjab arrive after a dramatic 3-2 triumph over Odisha FC, while Mumbai City carry momentum of their own following a commanding 4-0 victory against Mohammedan SC. Yet form alone may count for little on a night where results across stadiums could reshape the standings quickly. Further east, at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur FC prepare for a night with slim but realistic hope. Their path to the title is the narrowest of the contenders still standing, but not impossible. First, they must overcome Odisha FC. Then comes the waiting as events in Kolkata and New Delhi shape the destiny of the league crown. With all matches kicking off simultaneously at 19:30 IST, Thursday promises the kind of final day football that regularly produces shifting scenarios and late changes in momentum. Every goal will carry consequence. Every update from another stadium could alter the complexion of the race. And somewhere amid the events of the closing night, the destination of the ISL title will finally be decided. (Both fixtures will be telecast live on the Sony Sports Network and streamed on FanCode). Punjab FC vs Mumbai City FC: A Clash of Title Aspirations Mumbai City FC arrive with the pedigree to handle the immense pressure of the occasion. Head coach Petr Kratky has assembled a resilient unit that, despite a couple of indifferent results late in the season, has perfected the art of grinding out victories.

The Islanders have been heavily reliant on the brilliance of Lallianzuala Chhangte, who has remarkably channeled his inner Pippo Inzaghi or Jan Koller with a surprising knack for scoring headers inside the box. Brandon Fernandes and Lallianzuala Chhangte are in peak form, while Zothanpuia remains a vital pivot in Kratky’s system. Conversely, Punjab FC are entering uncharted territory, standing on the brink of history. Their rise into the title race has been one of the notable stories of the season. The transformation of Nsungusi Effiong signifies Punjab’s miraculous season. Having played 223 minutes of football last season with zero goals, the striker now boasts nine goal contributions (seven goals, two assists) in 12 appearances and could guide his team to the title. He is supported by the creative engine of Dani Ramírez and the relentless energy of winger Ninthoinganba Meetei.

Head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis showed glimpses of great football last season guiding his club to a 10th-place finish, but no one truly believed his unfancied squad would muster a title charge. That they are even here on the final day reflects the progress they have made. Punjab head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis remains focused on the process rather than the standings. “Last day, a lot of teams, a lot of possibilities, a lot of scenarios that anyone can be champion. We try to approach this game like all the others. And I think that pushes the pressure away from the team,” Dilmperis stated. Reflecting on the club’s high expectations and identity, he added, “When I signed in this club, I knew how demanding this club is. I love this kind of demanding because finally it means you are in the biggest club in India. We cannot be happy finishing in the second position.”

Winger Ninthoi Meetei, who remains fiercely determined despite battling setbacks during the season, highlighted his strong relationship with the head coach. “I must say that it’s a really hard time going on for me and it’s bad timing and very bad luck I must say. But I am not giving up from inside,” Ninthoi reflected. “I know this year I am so satisfied with the coach. He gives me more confidence. I know I am going to work hard.” Acknowledging the challenging environment, Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky noted, “We know what’s at stake, we need to win and we have to prepare accordingly to that. So as I said, the team is ready, they want to fight and we will see what happens. Obviously we know Delhi will be very hot so we have to be extremely well prepared for the conditions and obviously Punjab is a very good team.” Emphasising the mindset required, Kratky declared, “It’s the last one. The winner takes all basically. So again, as I said, for me, we just have to fight. We just have to work and nothing to lose. Can’t be anything left on the pitch.”

Midfielder Zothanpuia echoed this sentiment, crediting the coach for the squad’s strong mentality. “Our coach has played an important role in building confidence within the team. He always trusts and supports the players and his communication helps us to stay motivated and prepare for every game,” Zothanpuia shared. “The team has been prepared very well and staying focused in this game against Punjab FC. The mood in the camp is very, very positive. And now we are ready to give our best and to fight for our important three points.” Historically, Mumbai City FC hold the edge in this fixture. In their five previous Indian Super League encounters, the Islanders boast three victories compared to Punjab FC’s one, with the remaining match ending in a draw. However, in terms of goals, it remains exceptionally tight, with Punjab FC netting seven to Mumbai City’s six. Their clash in January 2025 was a closely contested affair that ended in a 1-1 stalemate in New Delhi.

Jamshedpur FC vs Odisha FC: A Final Stand

While Jamshedpur FC (6th, 21 points) chase a mathematical possible for the title, Odisha FC (12th, 10 points) arrive with contrasting motivations, following their narrow 3-2 loss to Punjab FC and will be desperate for a statement victory to finish off the season. Head coach Owen Coyle previously enjoyed success with Jamshedpur before, guiding them to the 2021-22 ISL Shield, and needs another favourable set of results to repeat that feat. Acknowledging the complex title permutations, Coyle stressed the importance of focusing purely on their own performance. “Our focus is on winning the game. That’s what we need to do, and that’s what we’ll do… We want to finish the season as strongly as possible,” Coyle stated. Elaborating on the title race, he added, “We’re not dependent on those teams losing; we’re just dependent on them not winning, which is a big difference. But that counts for nothing unless we win our game. So that is our focus.”

They will look to regain the defensive solidity they showcased for most of the season, bolstered by a fearless approach against the league’s top sides. Towering defender Stephen Eze embodied this mentality, highlighting their unique achievement of being the only team to defeat the current league leaders. “We never play defensive. We play every game to win. Every game, no matter who we play against,” Eze remarked. “That’s why when we played all the big guys, we didn’t go to sit back. We went to go forward. That’s how we won. We’re the only team to beat East Bengal this season. We beat them on merit.” Speaking on his dual responsibilities on the pitch, he noted, “I always play to win, but my primary role is to defend, to help the team. And I join the attack when I need to join to make a plus for the team to get the goal… I must always do my primary job.” Odisha FC, meanwhile, will deploy a high-intensity, counter-attacking approach spearheaded by Suhair VP and Kartik Hantal. Despite their struggles, head coach T.G. Purushothaman painted a resilient picture of his camp.

“Everything is going good at the moment. All are positive and we are ready to fight for this,” Purushothaman explained. “How much points we can earn, we have to earn it. And with all the things we have, we have to achieve something for the clubs, for the fans and everything, make them happy.” Defender Subham Bhattacharya echoed his coach’s sentiments, acknowledging the hurdles the squad has navigated. “We prepared well the last couple of days, although we faced many challenges on and off the field, as we know,” Bhattacharya shared. “But at the end of the day, it’s our job and we have to try our best to come up to the expectation. The atmosphere is good, everything is going better, so we’ll try our best and try to win three points.” Looking at past encounters, Jamshedpur FC hold a historical advantage over Odisha FC in the Indian Super League. Over their 16 previous meetings, the Men of Steel have claimed eight wins compared to six for the Juggernauts, alongside two draws. Furthermore, Jamshedpur boast a superior goal difference in this fixture, having netted 31 times to Odisha’s 24. Nevertheless, Odisha FC will draw immense belief from their latest encounter in March 2025, where they pulled off a spectacular 3-2 upset at the Furnace.

The Title Equations: As we enter the final matchday, the ISL points table reflects a league defined by razor-thin margins:

·       How Mumbai City FC or Punjab FC can win: A draw is useless for both teams. They must win to finish on 25 points. However, because East Bengal and Mohun Bagan already sit on 23 points with vastly superior goal differences, Mumbai and Punjab need favourable results from SC Delhi and Inter Kashi to ensure both Kolkata giants drop points (lose or draw) in their respective final matches.

·       How Jamshedpur FC can win: Jamshedpur FC can reach 24 points with a win over Odisha FC, but they need multiple results to go in their favour: both Kolkata giants must lose their matches, AND the Punjab FC vs Mumbai City FC match must end in a draw. Should Bagan and East Bengal draw their games, Jamshedpur would need to overcome a six-goal deficit to Bagan and a 12-goal deficit to East Bengal to win the title—a scenario that is highly unlikely. With one mistake, one moment of brilliance, or a late goal capable of completely changing the destiny of the ISL title race, this Thursday evening is poised to be an unforgettable chapter in Indian football history. Embodying the relentless spirit of true champions, they persevered when others faltered. Let the drama of the final matchday begin.

Late rally helps Chanmari FC rescue point against Rajasthan United

Rajasthan United FC – 2 (Gerard Artigas 25’, Thomyo L. Shimray 41’)

Chanmari FC – 2 (Lalruatsanga 90+2’, Michael Lalbiaksanga 90+8’)

Kalyani, Tuesday, May 19, 2026: Chanmari FC scored twice in stoppage time to salvage a dramatic 2-2 draw against Rajasthan United FC in their final Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 Championship Phase fixture at the Kalyani Stadium on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Rajasthan appeared set to secure their first win of the Championship Phase after establishing a two-goal lead through Gerard Artigas and Thomyo L. Shimray, but Chanmari produced a late comeback through Lalruatsanga in stoppage time before substitute Michael Lalbiaksanga struck a dramatic equaliser in the 98th minute to earn a point. Rajasthan will finish the season fourth with 18 points, while Chanmari are provisionally fifth with 15 points.

Rajasthan United FC controlled possession in the early stages, but Chanmari threatened regularly on the counter-attack through Lalruatsanga and João Vitor de Paula Morais (Jota). Goalkeeper Dinesh Choudhary was forced into an early save to deny Lalruatsanga, while Jota later sent an ambitious effort over the crossbar. The Desert Warriors gradually settled into their rhythm, with forwards Amadou Soukouna, Pranjal Bhumij and Thomyo combining effectively in attack alongside William Pauliankhum. However, Chanmari captain Lalrinchhana Tochhawng and defender Marlon Rangel remained resolute at the back. Around the 25th minute, Rajasthan took the lead following a defensive lapse. Goalkeeper Zothanmawia was caught off his line after a misplaced back pass from defender Zothanpuia, allowing forward Artigas to capitalise and finish calmly from distance. Rajasthan nearly doubled the advantage moments later, but Zothanpuia recovered well to block another effort from the Spaniard.

Chanmari continued to threaten on transitions, with Jota creating problems from wide areas. However, Rajasthan struck again near half-time. Midfielder Kiatalua Tadeu Emous (Norberto) threaded a precise through ball, after winning the ball, into the path of Thomyo on the right. The winger rounded the goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle to give Rajasthan a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute. Chanmari started the second half with urgency and believed they had reduced the deficit inside the opening five minutes. Midfielder Joel Lalramengmawia struck from distance after a scramble inside the box, but the effort was ruled out for offside as the ball travelled through the legs of Lalruatsanga. The Mizoram-based side continued to push forward. Jota combined well with substitute Pedro Lucas Silva (Pepe), while Lalruatsanga repeatedly troubled the Rajasthan defence down the right flank. Goalkeeper Dinesh produced a pair of important saves around the 67th and 68th minutes to deny Jota and C. Lalmuanpuia.

Chanmari came close again in the 70th minute when Jota surged into the area and slipped the ball through the legs of captain Novin Gurung before shooting, but Rajasthan defenders managed to clear the danger off the line. The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time. In the 92nd minute, a lofted delivery from the right found Lalruatsanga, who guided the ball into the net with his chest to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Chanmari continued to press forward and found the equaliser deep into added time. Following a partially cleared corner in the 98th minute, substitute Michael Lalbiaksanga struck a long-range effort from the right. Dinesh failed to gather the ball cleanly, and it slipped through his legs and over the line to complete the comeback. Chanmari FC finished strongly to secure a dramatic point, while Rajasthan United FC were left frustrated after surrendering a two-goal lead in the closing moments of their season finale.

Relegated Mohammedan Sporting to play for pride against NorthEast United

Guwahati, Monday, May 18, 2026: Relegation confirmed, Mohammedan Sporting Club will play for pride when they take on NorthEast United FC, who will aim to end their campaign on a positive note, in their final game of Indian Super League 2025-26 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The match will kick off at 17:00 IST, and will be streamed live on FanCode and telecast on Sony Sports TEN 2.

Mohammedan Sporting Club became the first team to be relegated from the Indian Super League following their 0-4 defeat to Mumbai City FC in their previous fixture in Kolkata. The Black and White Brigade, who played the entire season with an all-Indian squad, sit bottom of the standings with just three points from 12 matches, having failed to register a single win throughout the campaign. They will hope to end the season with their heads held high with a win. On the other hand, NorthEast United FC, who began the Indian football season by successfully defending the Durand Cup title, were unable to carry that momentum into their ISL campaign. The Highlanders currently occupy 10th place in the standings with 13 points from three wins, four draws and five defeats, and will hope to finish their season on a positive note with a victory.

Mohammedan SC, who earned promotion to the ISL after winning the 2023-24 I-League title, managed to remain in the top tier for only two seasons. The Kolkata giants will now compete in the 2026-27 Indian Football League campaign, hoping to secure an immediate return to the ISL. The last meeting between the two sides at the same venue in January 2025 ended in a goalless draw, while NorthEast United FC edged Mohammedan SC 1-0 in the reverse fixture in Kolkata, with Alaaeddine Ajaraie scoring the winner. Mohammedan SC Head Coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo gave a last message of the season to the players, “Give your best!” He continued, “They have been working very hard in training sessions and in all the games, despite having their limited resources. And I expect them to give their best in the next game as well.” Speaking about NorthEast Wadoo said, “They are very good at home. It’s going to be a difficult challenge for us. But yeah, this game is the last game and we want to give our best and finish the league with a win.”

Mohammedan SC have endured a difficult campaign throughout the season, scoring just seven goals while conceding 30 at the other end. Meanwhile, NorthEast United FC also possess a negative goal difference of -3, having scored 12 goals and conceded 15. Speaking ahead of their last game of the season, NorthEast United Head Coach Juan Pedro Benali said, “The most important thing is to do the best in the last game because everybody remembers you of the last game. Football has a very short memory and you are as good as your last game. That’s the most important. Be yourself, be focused. It’s not an easy game at all. It’s a very dangerous game because Mohammedan has nothing to lose and we have to maintain our pride, our honour. We need to have our feet on the floor and be humble. If we don’t fight and we don’t run and we don’t give everything, it will be difficult for us.”

Mohammedan forward Rochharzela, who has also played for NorthEast United in the past said, “It will be a good match for us because some of the young ones, they will show how important this match was. I hope that we can put in a great performance tomorrow and end the season with a smile on our faces.” Speaking about the atmosphere inside the dressing room, NorthEast United captain Tondonba Singh said, “We are positive. All our players are ready to put in one last effort. It’s really important to win the match and give our fans something to cheer about in our home ground.”  As the season enters its final round of fixtures, both teams will look to give their fans one last reason to cheer before embarking on different journeys next season. Mohammedan SC will prepare for life back in the Indian Football League, while NorthEast United FC will aim to regroup and mount a stronger challenge in the next ISL campaign.

Hugo Díaz’s injury-time equaliser seals IFL 2025-26 title for Diamond Harbour

Dempo SC – 1 (Marcus Joseph 50’)                                             Diamond Harbour FC – 1 (Hugo Díaz 90’+1)

Goa, Sunday, May 17, 2026: Late drama unfolded in the closing moments as an injury-time goal from Hugo Díaz earned Diamond Harbour FC a 1-1 draw against Dempo SC at the PJN Stadium in Goa on Sunday, May 17, 2026. The point helped them clinch the Indian Football League 2025-26 title and gain promotion to the Indian Super League 2026-27. Needing only a point to wrap up the title, Diamond Harbour were trailing from the 50th minute after Marcus Joseph gave Dempo SC the lead. A goal in the first minute of injury time ensured that they secured 29 points, thus winning their maiden IFL title, with a match to spare. The side from West Bengal won their third promotion in as many seasons after winning the I-League 3 and I-League 2 in the previous campaigns.

Diamond Harbour showed signs of nervousness in the opening half hour, misplacing simple passes and lacking clarity in their attacking approach. The first chance of the game came for the home side from a misplaced pass by the Diamond Harbour defence, but Sebastián Gutiérrez saw his effort drift narrowly wide of the post. Dempo, playing without any pressure, looked more energetic in their build-up play and were making good use of Diamond Harbour’s mistakes, but were not able to punish them by scoring. Gutiérrez once again pulled his shot wide of the post from a long-range effort. Moments later, José Luis Moreno deflected a corner kick at the near post towards the goal, but it was expertly cleared off the line by Melroy Assisi. At the other end, Diamond Harbour, who looked below their usual attacking standards, still managed to create two good opportunities. Mikel Kortazar blazed his effort over the bar after getting on the end of a set-piece delivery. Moments later, Dempo goalkeeper Ashish Sibi produced a fine save to deny Hugo Díaz, who had once again found space inside the box following a long throw.

Dempo caused several nervy moments inside the opposition box, with Marcus Joseph creating openings for his teammates around him, but this time Diamond Harbour defended resolutely to keep them at bay as both sides went into the break with the scores level at 0-0. Dempo were rewarded for their persistence five minutes after the restart. The hosts won a free-kick at the edge of the box after Seigoumang Doungel was brought down by K. Ajith Kumar. Marcus Joseph’s initial effort was blocked by the wall, but the striker reacted quickest to the rebound and thundered the ball into the top corner before the defenders or goalkeeper could respond, scoring his eighth goal of the season. Kibu Vicuña responded to the setback by introducing Luka Majcen, Bryce Miranda, and R. Ramdinthara, but the changes failed to create any clear-cut opportunities that seriously troubled the Dempo defence or the goalkeeper.

However, it was Dempo who continued to look the more threatening side, with Gutiérrez creating havoc in the opposition half. Aubin Kouakou rose highest to meet a free-kick delivery from Gutiérrez, but the towering defender was denied by an excellent low save from Dheeraj Singh. The forward was at the heart of almost everything the hosts created, and Diamond Harbour struggled to contain him as the Colombian found plenty of space and freedom in central areas. Diamond Harbour looked short of ideas and, with a heavy downpour arriving in the final 10 minutes, the conditions became even more difficult for both sides to create chances. However, the visitors eventually found a way back into the contest after the referee added eight minutes of stoppage time. Substitute Girik Khosla delivered a pinpoint cross into the box for Hugo Díaz, who had drifted away from his marker. The Spaniard timed his jump perfectly and planted a powerful header into the back of the net, a goal that ultimately confirmed the title for Diamond Harbour

SC Delhi, Inter Kashi play out goalless draw

Sporting Club Delhi – 0                                                                     Inter Kashi – 0

New Delhi, Sunday, May 17, 2026: SC Delhi and Inter Kashi shared the spoils in a tightly-contested 0-0 draw in their Indian Super League 2025-26 clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, May 17, 2026.  Despite Inter Kashi enjoying greater attacking momentum and creating the better chances, both sides were unable to find the finishing touch in a match defined by disciplined defending and resolute goalkeeping. SC Delhi keeper Nora Fernandes was named the Player of the Match for his brilliant work in between the sticks, including six saves.  With this result, Inter Kashi move up to ninth place with 13 points from 12 matches, while Sporting Club Delhi climb to 11th with 11 points from the same number of games. Inter Kashi started on the front foot, showing early attacking intent and testing the Sporting Club Delhi defence within the opening minutes. Rohit Danu forced a save from Nora Fernandes with a long-range effort, while winger Mohammed Asif and striker Seiminlen Doungel both came close to breaking the deadlock.

Sporting Club Delhi, however, remained organised at the back, with Clarence Fernandes and captain Ashutosh Mehta leading a compact defensive display. While the hosts saw more of the ball in phases, they struggled to create clear openings in the final third. Inter Kashi continued to dominate possession through the first half, with Alfred Planas particularly influential in attack. The Spaniard saw multiple efforts either blocked or saved, and even had the ball in the net in the 37th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The visitors came closest to scoring just before the interval when a well-delivered corner from the right saw Narender Gahlot open on the far side, but the centre back failed to connect cleanly from close range. Planas then forced another sharp save from Fernandes in stoppage time, ensuring the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

Sporting Club Delhi emerged with greater urgency in the second half, making three changes at the restart and pushing higher up the pitch. The hosts enjoyed a bright spell early on, with Augustine Lalrochana coming close with a left-footed effort that drifted narrowly wide. Inter Kashi gradually regained control and continued to threaten from set-pieces and long-range efforts. Sergio Llamas orchestrated play from midfield, setting up Planas for another attempt that was parried away by Fernandes. As the game progressed, both teams exchanged attacking spells, but neither could carve out a decisive opportunity. Substitute Prasanth K delivered a teasing ball into the box in the 79th minute, but Nauris Petkevičius failed to guide his effort on target. At the other end, Abdul-Halik Hudu and Augustine combined well, though the final touch continued to elude the hosts. The closing stages saw Inter Kashi push for a late winner, with Narender Gahlot’s header punched away by Fernandes before a flurry of blocked attempts inside the box by SC Delhi defense. Sergio Llamas had the final chance deep into stoppage time, but his effort sailed high and wide. In the end, neither side could find the breakthrough, settling for a point each in a contest.

Punjab FC holds their nerve in a shootout against Minerva Academy, defending the DSC AIFF Junior League title

Minerva Academy FC – 1 (Md Azam Khan 49’)

Punjab FC – 1 (Jasmeet Singh 38’)

(Punjab FC won 5-3 on penalties.)

Bambolim, Goa, May 14, 2026: In a repeat of last year’s final, two teams from Punjab battled it out once again, with Punjab FC defending their Dream Sports Championship AIFF Junior League title by securing a thrilling 5-3 penalty shootout victory against Minerva Academy FC after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium in Goa on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Punjab FC took the lead through Jasmeet Singh (38′), while Minerva Academy FC equalised in the 49th minute through Md Azam Khan. In the shoot-out, Pawandeep Singh, Aayush Koul, Akash P, Kabyansh Rai, and Jasmeet Singh scored for the winners, while Konthoujam Denamoni, Md Azam Khan, and Greatson Hidam converted for Minerva Academy FC. Ramung Zimik’s spot-kick was saved by the goalkeeper. For his vital contributions, especially the match-winning penalty save, Augustasya Gupta was named the Player of the Match, while Jasmeet Singh’s stellar campaign earned him the Player of the Tournament accolade.

Minerva Academy FC entered the match aiming to dictate the tempo, and they quickly established control of the midfield. The first 30 minutes were entirely dominated by Minerva Academy FC. They controlled the ball from the outset, eventually boasting 67 per cent possession and fashioning seven clear chances in the first half alone. However, despite their territorial dominance, they struggled to find the decisive cutting edge in the final third. Punjab FC gradually began to claw its way back into the game after the half-hour mark. Against the run of play, Punjab FC broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Capitalising on a precise through ball from Kamlesh Chand, Jasmeet Singh found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He comfortably beat the keeper and calmly slotted the ball into the net to give his side the lead, with the goal proving to be the difference between the two teams going into the break. The second half began with high-intensity action right from the restart. Punjab FC earned a free-kick from a dangerous position just outside the penalty area early on, but the attempt yielded no reward.

Moments later, at the other end, Minerva Academy FC equalised through a moment of individual brilliance from MD Azam Khan in the 49th minute. Surging down the left flank, he dribbled past two defenders before taking a shot. While his initial effort was blocked and deflected, Azam reacted quickest to the rebound and put the ball past the goalkeeper to level the tie just four minutes after the restart. Azam came very close to scoring again in the 53rd minute, but an excellent clearance from Akash P resulted in a corner, denying Minerva Academy FC the lead. The second half developed into a tense, end-to-end battle. Punjab FC came close to regaining the lead when substitute Arambam Deepak Singh’s excellent effort was acrobatically saved by the Minerva Academy FC goalkeeper to keep the scores level. The final 10 minutes of regulation time saw Minerva Academy FC create multiple openings, but they could not apply the finishing touch. The referee added eight minutes of stoppage time, during which Minerva Academy FC continued to push forward, but neither side could find a winner, sending the match into a penalty shoot-out.

Punjab FC took the first penalty, with substitute Pawandeep Singh converting to give them the advantage. Konthoujam Denamoni responded for Minerva Academy FC to make it 1-1. Aayush Koul then scored for Punjab FC, and Azam Khan immediately matched him to make it 2-2. The turning point arrived in the third round of penalties. Akash P confidently made it 3-2 for Punjab FC. However, Minerva Academy FC substitute Ramung Zimik saw his effort saved, as Punjab FC goalkeeper Augustasya Gupta pulled off a brilliant diving stop. Substitute Kabyansh Rai then calmly converted his spot kick to make it 4-2, piling the pressure on Minerva Academy FC. Greatson Hidam converted his penalty to keep Minerva Academy FC alive, but it was to no avail. Punjab FC skipper Jasmeet Singh took responsibility for the decisive fifth penalty, holding his nerve to find the back of the net and secure the victory.

FC Goa hold Mohun Bagan SG to a draw

FC Goa – 1 (Ronney Willson Kharbudon 67’)           Mohun Bagan Super Giant – 1 (Jamie MacLaren 55’)

Margao, Saturday, May 9, 2026: FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant played out a 1-1 draw in their Indian Super League 2025-26 encounter at the PJN Stadium in Margao on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Jamie MacLaren opened the scoring for the visitors early in the second half, but substitute Ronney Willson Kharbudon struck back shortly after to rescue a crucial point for the Gaurs. Both heavyweights shared the spoils in a fascinating tactical battle, with the Mariners dominating possession and the hosts thriving on swift counter-attacks. FC Goa goalkeeper Bob Jackson was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding and confident performance between the sticks. Mohun Bagan SG moved to second in the table with 21 points from 10 matches, while FC Goa remains in fourth with 20 points. The dropped points mean East Bengal FC remains top of the table. The match began with Mohun Bagan Super Giant attacking from right to left, immediately dictating the tempo and monopolising the ball in the opening exchanges. A wary start saw the visitors’ Robson flagged offside in the third minute before Lalengmawia Ralte fizzed an early strike just over the crossbar.

Despite seeing very little of the ball, FC Goa maintained a highly compact defensive shape to frustrate the visitors, with 21-year-old goalkeeper Bob Jackson looking extremely confident early on. Mohun Bagan Super Giant continued to dominate possession early on, establishing themselves as favourites against a Gaurs side happy to sit deep. Liston Colaco and Jamie MacLaren combined down the right flank in the 10th minute, but the latter’s cutback found no takers inside the penalty box. Soon after, Abdul Rabeeh decided to take the game into his own hands in the 12th minute, showcasing his individual brilliance by twisting and turning past multiple defenders in white before taking a slightly heavy final touch that allowed Vishal Kaith to collect the ball. In the 19th minute, Tom Aldred met a corner delivery with a header, but Ayush Chhetri comfortably headed it away to safety. High-intensity action continued as Liston Colaco tried his luck in the 22nd minute from the edge of the box, but his effort hit Sandesh Jhingan straight in the face as he attempted to curl it around the towering centre-back.

As the rain slowly intensified in Goa around the 28th minute, a more measured approach took over, with nothing to separate the two sides. Robson smashed a cross-cum-shot from the right flank in the 31st minute that flew past a diving Bob Jackson but found no takers. The Mariners controlled the midfield but struggled to penetrate FC Goa’s resolute backline, managing their first shot on target in the 35th minute through Tekcham Singh. The Green & Maroon Brigade kept on attacking as Colaco came close again in the 37th minute, taking a touch and turning before curling a tame effort just past the far post. FC Goa ended the half on the front foot, with Muhammed Nemil and Sangwan whipping in crosses while Udanta Singh attempted to shimmy into the box from the left flank. However, they were unable to break through and went into half-time with the score at 0-0.

Seeking a breakthrough after failing to truly threaten the young Goan keeper, the visitors made a double substitution at half-time, bringing on Jason Cummings and Manvir Singh to inject fresh attacking impetus. The changes immediately paid dividends, with Cummings letting one fly from a tight angle in the 50th minute, but Bob Jackson raised his arm to make a confident stop. At the other end, Pol Moreno unleashed a grounded effort in the 53rd minute that took a slight deflection before being stopped by Aldred right in front of the goal. Five minutes later, the Mariners finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute following a defensive lapse. Experienced defender Sandesh Jhingan failed to receive the ball, allowing it to roll into the path of a lurking Jamie MacLaren. The forward calmly slotted the ball past Bob Jackson, who had come off his line but could not deny the attacker, giving Mohun Bagan Super Giant a 1-0 lead with his ninth goal of the season. In response to falling behind, FC Goa turned to their bench in the 61st minute, introducing Daniel Lalhlimpuia, Mohammad Yasir, and Ronney Willson Kharbudon in a triple substitution.

The tactical switch proved to be an absolute masterstroke for the home side. In the 67th minute, Dejan Dražić provided a precise assist for Kharbudon on the right flank, and the substitute made an immediate impact in highly fortunate circumstances. A cross from the 23-year-old floated unexpectedly towards the goal, and a back-tracking Vishal Kaith couldn’t reach the ball as it found the back of the net. The strike gave Kharbudon his first ISL goal and levelled the score at 1-1. The equaliser shifted the momentum, and FC Goa began to create more dangerous opportunities despite their lack of overall possession. In the 71st minute, Cummings was presented with a pass on a silver platter, but the Australian got underneath the ball and sent it into the stands instead of steering it into the far corner. With the game opening up, Colaco went on a marauding run in the 75th minute to burst into the box, but Jhingan extended his right leg to block him and concede a corner, which ultimately proved unfruitful.

FC Goa threatened again in the 78th minute when Rabeeh sent a probing cross into the box from the right, but it was too far for Yasir. Udanta Singh forced a save from the visitors’ goalkeeper in the 81st minute, while Manvir Singh registered a late shot for Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 84th minute as both sides pushed for a winner. Udanta Singh forced a save from the visitors’ goalkeeper in the 81st minute, while Manvir Singh registered a late effort for Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 84th minute as both sides pushed for a winner. Deep into stoppage time, Dražić was just inches away from tapping a perfect cross into the back of the net to seal the win for the Gaurs, but he missed, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

FC Goa and Mohun Bagan Super Giant battle for top spot; Jamshedpur FC also target first place against Bengaluru FC

Margao/Jamshedpur, Friday, May 8, 2026: FC Goa will host Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their Indian Super League 2025–26 fixture at the PJN Stadium in Margao on Saturday, May 9, with kick-off scheduled for 17:00 IST. Later in the evening, Jamshedpur FC will take on Bengaluru FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, with kick-off at 19:30 IST. Both fixtures will be streamed live on FanCode and telecast on Sony Sports TEN 2.

FC Goa vs Mohun Bagan Super Giant

The first fixture of the evening carries major significance in the title race, with both Goa and Mohun Bagan capable of climbing to the top of the table with a victory. Mohun Bagan return to league action after a 19-day gap, having last secured a 1-0 win against NorthEast United FC in a rain-affected contest courtesy of a goal from Robson Robinho. The Mariners are currently third with 20 points and unbeaten in their last three matches. Goa, meanwhile, will aim to respond after a 0-2 defeat against Jamshedpur in their previous outing. The Gaurs sit fourth with 19 points and remain firmly involved in a tightly contested title race. Mohun Bagan has historically enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture, winning six of the 10 meetings between the two sides in the Indian Super League, while Goa has registered three victories, and one match has ended in a draw. The Mariners have also marginally outscored Goa across those encounters, netting 13 goals to the Gaurs’ 12.

The last meeting between the sides, played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on March 8, 2025, ended in a 2-0 victory for Mohun Bagan through a Boris Singh own goal and a strike from Greg Stewart. The contest will also feature the league’s two strongest defensive units. Mohun Bagan have conceded just six goals this season, the best defensive record in the competition, while Goa have conceded eight, the second-best tally in the league. Mohun Bagan head coach Sergio Lobera acknowledged the challenge posed by Goa and highlighted the quality within the opposition setup under head coach Manolo Márquez. “It’s difficult to play against FC Goa, especially when you look at how they are playing at home. Now, after the last result, maybe they are playing with less pressure. But they have a very good team. They have a very good coach. It will be a difficult game for sure.”

Goa assistant coach Gourmangi Singh, meanwhile, highlighted the unity within the squad and the players’ understanding of the team’s identity and style of play. “One of the biggest strengths that we have about this team is the group. The boys are fantastic. They know exactly what we expect, not just as a head coach but also as a staff and as a group. They clearly understand the identity of the team, the style of football that we play, and what we are going to demand. So I think they make things easy for us.” Mohun Bagan’s defensive unit, featuring Mehtab Singh, Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Subhasish Bose, and Tom Aldred, will be crucial against a Goa attack capable of troubling any opposition. At the other end, Jamie Maclaren, the league’s second-highest scorer with eight goals, will lead the line for the Mariners alongside fellow Australian Jason Cummings. Robinho, who has contributed three goals and one assist this season, is also expected to play an important creative role. Cummings also highlighted the strong bond within the Mohun Bagan dressing room and its importance to the team’s performances this season.

“We’ve got an amazing dressing room. The boys are like a close family. We’re like brothers. I see these guys more than my actual family. We get on really well. That’s a massive key to success. I think that’s why we’ve been successful. That’s why we’re doing well this season.” For Goa, Mohammad Yasir and Brison Fernandes will be key on the flanks, while Muhammed Nemil, who has registered one goal and two assists this season, will be expected to lead the attack as the Gaurs look to rediscover their scoring touch after failing to find the net against Jamshedpur in their previous outing. Goa player Udanta Singh also expressed pride in the team’s performances this season and the contribution of the Indian contingent within the squad. “Especially this season, we’re doing much better than other teams. We have only two foreigners, and we’ve been fighting for the top spot. We’ve been doing very well with the Indian contingent and with the Indian players coming up from the reserve team. They’re also doing well. In my opinion, we’re doing great.”

The Men of Steel are currently second in the standings with 21 points and could move to the top of the table with a win. Bengaluru, meanwhile, is seventh with 17 points and has the opportunity to climb at least two places with all three points. Jamshedpur head into the fixture after a 2-0 victory against Goa, with Rei Tachikawa and Madih Talal scoring in the win. Bengaluru, meanwhile, played out a 1-1 draw against Odisha FC in their previous outing and are without a win in their last four matches, recording one defeat and three draws during that period. Bengaluru holds the advantage in the overall head-to-head record between the two sides in the Indian Super League, having won seven of the 16 meetings. Jamshedpur has registered five victories, while four matches have ended in draws. Bengaluru has also scored 22 goals in these encounters compared to Jamshedpur’s 16.

The previous meeting between the two teams, played at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on February 9, ended in a 3-0 victory for Bengaluru through goals from Édgar Méndez and Alberto Noguera, who scored twice. With three points crucial in the context of the title race, Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle is likely to rely on the attacking combination of Raphaël Messi Bouli, who has two goals and one assist this season, and Mohammed Sanan, who has scored three times in the campaign so far. Ahead of the contest, Coyle stressed the importance of focusing on performances during the closing phase of the season. “There are certainly going to be twists and turns, but we want to concentrate on what we can control. And what we control is two big performances, looking to win two tough games and see where that takes us. So, yeah, it’s an exciting time. It always is when you come at the business end of the season.” In midfield, Nikola Stojanović and Madih Talal, both with four goal involvements each, will be central to Jamshedpur’s chance creation.

Centre-back Pratik Chaudhari also backed the younger members of the squad to handle the challenge of facing experienced players such as Sunil Chhetri. “The younger boys that we have… they are good human beings, but they are very competitive. So I don’t think they would have any psychological barrier… With all due respect, they will have the respect that they are legends of the game. But yeah, once the whistle blows, they will be there to give their best.” For the Blues, an attacking approach will likely be necessary as they seek to end their winless run. Bengaluru head coach Pep Muñoz stressed the importance of improvement in both penalty areas ahead of the contest. “Obviously, we have to be better in both boxes. We have to defend much better. We are also improving the pressing mechanism. But yeah, we have to be more effective defending the box and defending the sides, and also more aggressive when we finish the play, more accurate.” Brian Sanchez, who has scored four goals this season while operating behind the forward line, will be a key figure in the final third.

Up front, Ryan Williams, who has contributed two goals and one assist, will be expected to combine with Chhetri, who has scored twice in the league so far. Defender Naorem Roshan Singh also emphasised the need for greater defensive consistency and cutting out individual mistakes. “As a player, we have to avoid some silly mistakes in defence. And personally, I also made some mistakes in the previous game that I could have avoided. So if we can avoid those silly mistakes, we will be good, and we will be more consistent for the team.”

TV9 Bangla features the journey of the BJP that started in Bengal this weekend. The government begins its journey on the very soil of Syama Prasad Mookerjee. How did Syama Prasad stand by the millions of displaced people, offering solace amidst the scars of riots and partition? How did the BJP—wielding his ideals as its weapon—succeed in forming a government on the soil of Bengal? The BJP embarked on its journey within the nation’s parliamentary democracy back in the 1980s. Subsequently, in 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a “saffron wave” swept across the entire country. This time, in Bengal, the Trinamool Congress—already beleaguered by allegations of corruption—proved unable to withstand that very storm. Plagued by accusations concerning unemployment, women’s safety, corruption, “cut-money” rackets, and political violence, the Trinamool Congress was ousted from the throne of Bengal by the verdict of the people. Modi had truly understood the pulse of the Bengali people. Now, which path will the new government choose to tread? To seek answers to all these questions—featuring insights from experts—TV9 Bangla presents its new news series: ‘BJP’ir Bongo Bijoy… Sunday, May 10, 2026, at 10 P

Diamond Harbour FC edge closer to title with 5-2 comeback win over Rajasthan United FC

Diamond Harbour FC – 5 (Kevin Ademola 40’, Hugo Díaz Rodríguez 47’, Kevin Ademola 53’, Wahengbam Angousana Luwang (88′), Hugo Díaz Rodríguez (90′) Rajasthan United FC– 2 (Gerard Artigas 5, 27’)

Kalyani, Friday, May 8, 2026: Diamond Harbour FC took a big step towards clinching the title after registering a 5-2 comeback win against Rajasthan United FC in their Star Cement Indian Football League 2025–26 Championship Phase fixture at Kalyani Stadium on Friday, May 8. Rajasthan raced into a two-goal lead through a Gerard Artigas brace before suffering a defensive collapse that saw them concede five goals. Hugo Díaz Rodríguez and Kevin Ademola scored two each, while Wahengbam Angousana Luwang also found the net for the Kolkata side. The result extends Diamond Harbour’s lead at the top to 28 points from 12 matches. Rajasthan remains fourth with 17 points and is officially eliminated from the title race. Diamond Harbour made a fast start and immediately looked to attack through the flanks. Inside the opening minute, Halicharan Narzary delivered a dangerous cross towards Ademola, but Rajasthan goalkeeper and captain Bhabindra Malla Thakuri came off his line well to punch clear.

Despite Diamond Harbour’s early pressure, Rajasthan struck first in the fifth minute. Artigas drove into the box from the left before placing the ball past Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem into the far corner. The hosts continued to dominate possession and territory after conceding. In the seventh minute, Melroy Melwin Assisi guided a header towards goal from another cross into the box, but the effort lacked power, and Malla collected it comfortably. Rajasthan’s centre-back pairing of Abdul Samed Ango and Gursimrat Singh Gill initially did well to absorb the pressure, with Diamond Harbour repeatedly targeting the wide areas through Narzary and Jobby Justin. However, Diamond Harbour’s high-intensity pressing appeared to take a toll in the humid conditions at Kalyani Stadium, allowing Rajasthan to find more space in the final third, especially from the flanks. The visitors doubled their lead in the 27th minute as Artigas completed his brace in style. Pranjal Bhumij found the Spaniard outside the box, and with Melroy failing to close him down, Artigas unleashed a powerful strike from distance that beat Dheeraj despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.

Diamond Harbour nearly responded immediately from a set piece. In the 28th minute, Díaz aimed a free kick towards the bottom-left corner, but Malla reacted quickly to parry the effort away. Both teams largely avoided central attacking areas, preferring to build through the wings. Narzary and Justin continued to deliver crosses for Diamond Harbour, while Pangambam Naoba Meitei and Bhumij looked lively out wide for Rajasthan. The hosts pulled one back in the 41st minute. Díaz floated a cross towards Justin at the far post, and despite pressure, Justin headed the ball across goal for Ademola to nod home from close range. Four minutes were added at the end of the half, and Diamond Harbour equalised in stoppage time. Narzary beat Novin Gurung on the left before sending in a teasing cross towards the far post. Malla failed to collect cleanly, allowing Díaz to walk the ball into the empty net in the second minute of added time.

Rajasthan nearly regained the lead moments later when Isaac Nortey unleashed a long-range effort heading towards the top corner, but Dheeraj reacted sharply to palm the ball away. Diamond Harbour resumed the second half on the front foot. In the 49th minute, Díaz was allowed space at the edge of the box, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. The hosts completed the comeback in the 53rd minute through Ademola’s second goal of the evening. Justin drove into the box from the right before cutting the ball back towards Ademola, who managed to apply the finishing touch despite pressure from Abdul. Diamond Harbour continued to dominate proceedings and nearly added a fourth three minutes later. A floated cross found Justin at the far post, but Malla produced an excellent fingertip save from point-blank range to deny the forward.

Rajasthan’s defensive issues became increasingly evident as the second half progressed, with the visitors repeatedly failing to track runners inside their own box. Diamond Harbour also dominated the midfield battle, winning most second balls and sustaining pressure. Rajasthan did create a few openings from a distance. In the 63rd minute, Kiatalua Tadeu Emous fired narrowly wide from range with Dheeraj rooted to the spot. A minute later, his deflected effort nearly found the net, but Dheeraj reacted in time to make the save. Díaz had another opportunity in the 77th minute after winning a free kick outside the box, but his effort failed to dip in time and went over. Despite trailing, Rajasthan lacked the attacking sharpness they had shown in the first half. Amadou Soukouna, introduced after the break to strengthen the attack, was kept largely quiet by the Diamond Harbour defence.

The hosts finally put the contest beyond doubt in the 88th minute amid a complete collapse in Rajasthan’s defence. Angousana delivered an inswinging corner that somehow travelled through a crowd of Rajasthan players and crept into the net, with Malla unable to react in time. Two minutes later, Diamond Harbour struck again to make it five. Bryce Brian Miranda broke into the box from the left before picking out an unmarked Díaz at the far post with a precise cutback. The Spaniard made no mistake, slotting home with a first-time finish. Diamond Harbour nearly added a sixth goal deep into stoppage time when Justin attempted a finesse finish, but Malla produced another save to deny him.

Chanmari and Dempo look for a final push

Aizawl, Friday, May 8, 2026: Chanmari FC will host Dempo SC, as both sides will look to finish the final stretch of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 on a high at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The match will kick off at 18:30 IST and will be broadcast live on DD Sports and Sony Sports Network, with streaming available on Waves and Sony LIV. Out of the title race, both sides will look to finish the final rounds of the season on a high with some good performances. As per the current standings, Diamond Harbour FC tops the table with 25 points, while Dempo currently occupies fifth with 13 from 11 matches and cannot leapfrog the former even with three wins. Chanmari FC follows closely in sixth with 11 points. Both teams are effectively out of the championship race with only three fixtures remaining and a maximum of nine points available; the result in Aizawl will not carry significant implications.

A victory for Dempo would take them to 16 points, allowing them to put considerable pressure on fourth-placed Rajasthan United (17 points). For Chanmari, a win at home is essential; three points would move them to 14 points, seeing them overtake Dempo and move out of the bottom spot for the first time in the championship stage. Dempo enter the match on the back of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rajasthan United in their previous outing. A disciplined defensive display, spearheaded by crucial blocks from José Luís Moreno and sharp saves by goalkeeper Ashish Sibi, laid the foundation for the win. Chanmari, on the other hand, will be desperate to bounce back from a 0-4 defeat at the hands of Shillong Lajong. The Mizo side’s task in that match was severely compromised after midfielder Joel Lalramengmawia was sent off in the 17th minute, forcing them to play with 10 men for the vast majority of the contest.

Despite the heavy loss, Chanmari will take solace in moments of resilience, including brave reflex saves from their custodian late in the game, but will know they must drastically improve on their attacking output after registering just two shots on target. The previous meeting between the two sides in the league stage on March 12 in Aizawl ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Suanngaihmuana and KC Malsawmsanga netted for Chanmari, while Sebastián Gutiérrez and Marcus Joseph were on target for Dempo. Despite being on a two-match losing streak, Chanmari FC head coach Dipankur Sharma will be aware of the importance of the team’s identity and playing in front of the home fans. They will want to show the home supporters that they can compete with the best in this league. The focus will be purely on execution and taking their chances when they come. However, they will be aware of the attacking threat of their opponents, knowing that they have learned from their previous encounters and are ready for the tactical challenge Dempo poses.

Dempo Sports Club arrives in Aizawl with a clear objective. Manager Samir Naik will be emphasising the squad’s resilience following their recent fixtures. The Goan side will be determined to rectify any past errors and give their 100 per cent on the field. They will look to analyse their performances from the last game and will be eager to maintain their winning momentum. The Golden Eagles will look to exploit gaps in a Chanmari defence that has conceded 21 goals, the highest among teams in the Championship phase. Dempo possesses one of the most potent attacking units in the competition, underlining their influence in the final third. Their tally of 15 goals makes them the third-highest scoring side in this phase, behind Diamond Harbour and Shillong Lajong. Striker Marcus Joseph has been the standout performer with seven goals and one assist. In attacking midfield, Sebastián Gutiérrez has been instrumental with two goals and two assists, while centre-forward Richmond Kwasi Owusu has also contributed two goals and an assist. Adding to this firepower, players like Seigoumang Doungel and Vieri Colaco will be ones to watch after their match-winning combination in the previous outing, while goalkeeper Ashish Sibi will look to replicate his assured performance between the sticks.

Chanmari’s backline, therefore, faces a stern examination. To withstand that threat, the centre-back pairing of Marlon De Almeida Rangel and Lalrinchhana Tochhawng will need to deliver a disciplined performance, supported by fullbacks Zothanpuia and F Malsawmtluanga. With the Championship Phase reaching its climax, tomorrow’s clash at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium offers Chanmari a chance to delight their home supporters and climb the table, while Dempo SC face a defining test of their attacking credentials on the road.
