Kolkata Banga Tigers Set for Historic Rugby Premier League Debut with Global Squad of 26 Players

The Kolkata Banga Tigers, Kolkata’s first-ever franchise in the Rugby Premier League, are set to make their much-anticipated debut this season with a squad of 26 players from 11 countries, featuring Olympians, world champions, National Champions, and some of the most accomplished rugby talent from around the world. The franchise marks a historic moment for rugby in Eastern India, with Kolkata entering the Rugby Premier League for the very first time. Built on a blend of international experience and elite sporting talent, the squad reflects the franchise’s ambition to establish itself as a strong force in the competition while contributing to the growth of rugby in the region. Adding to the significance of the season is the launch of the Kolkata Banga Tigers Women, making the franchise one of only four teams across India to field a women’s squad in the Rugby Premier League this year.

Joining the press conference was Sanaya Mehta Vyas, vice president, Rugby India, who expressed her excitement at seeing Kolkata represented in the Rugby Premier League for the first time. A rugby player herself and a Kolkatan, she spoke about what the city’s entry into the league means for the growth of the sport in Eastern India. A strong advocate for women in sports, she also highlighted the significance of the Kolkata Banga Tigers Women and the role the women’s competition will play in creating greater participation, visibility, and opportunities for female athletes across the country. Speaking at the launch, Sanaya Mehta Vyas, vice president, Rugby India, said:

“Kolkata has always shared a special relationship with rugby, and it is wonderful to see the city represented on the Rugby Premier League stage. The launch of the Kolkata Banga Tigers marks an important step for the growth of the sport in Eastern India. I am equally excited to see Kolkata field a women’s team this season, creating greater opportunities and visibility for female rugby players while inspiring the next generation of athletes.”

Shruti, spokesperson for the Kolkata Banga Tigers, present at the launch, added:

“Hunch Ventures has been associated with rugby in India for several years, and our participation in the Rugby Premier League with the Kolkata Banga Tigers is a natural extension of that commitment. Given Kolkata’s unique place in rugby’s history, it is a fitting home for the franchise.”

Osea Kolinisau, head coach of the Kolkata Banga Tigers Men’s Team, said:

“We have assembled a talented group of players with extensive international experience. Our focus is on building a team that plays with intensity, discipline,ne and pride, and we are excited to represent Kolkata in the franchise’s inaugural season.”

Paul Delport, head coach of the Kolkata Banga Tigers Women’s Team, added:

“The launch of the women’s team is an important moment for rugby in India. We have a strong group of athletes who are eager to compete at the highest level, and we hope this team inspires more young girls to take up the sport.”

With a squad featuring elite international talent, experienced leaders, and emerging stars from across the world, the Kolkata Banga Tigers are set to carry Kolkata’s ambitions onto one of the biggest stages in the sport as they prepare for their inaugural Rugby Premier League campaign.

The HSBC Rugby Premier League 2026 is scheduled from 16th to 30th June at Gachibowli Stadium, Hyderabad, and will stream live on JioHotstar and Star Sports 1 Select.

Foreign Liquor Trade Body Urges West Bengal Government to Introduce Key Policy Reforms An industry body representing over 1,000 licensed FL shops highlights key concerns and recommendations through the press meet

Kolkata | 7 June 2026: The Society for the Welfare of West Bengal Foreign Licenses today organized a press meet through which it conveyed a series of recommendations to the Government of West Bengal, calling for policy reforms aimed at strengthening the sector, improving ease of business, and ensuring a more sustainable operating environment for licensed Foreign Liquor (FL) shops across the state. Representing more than 1,000 licensed FL shops across West Bengal, the Society urged the government to address long-standing industry concerns, including trade margin rationalization, stronger action against illicit liquor, decentralization of licensing processes, and greater policy transparency.

The event was attended by Shri Santanu Kar, former Superintendent of Police, CBI; Shri Shankudeb Panda, eminent public figure; & Shri D.S. Nepal, Representative, Nepal Tourism Board, as chief guests. They interacted with members of the association and emphasized the importance of stakeholder consultation and constructive dialogue in addressing challenges faced by regulated businesses and strengthening governance frameworks. Addressing the media, representatives of the society highlighted the significant contribution made by licensed FL shops to state revenues and employment generation, while pointing to some operational and policy-related challenges that continue to impact the sector.

The association called upon the government of West Bengal to consider reforms in the following areas:

* Rationalization of trade margins in line with increasing operational, compliance, and business costs.
* Stronger enforcement measures to curb the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illicit liquor and protect consumers as well as licensed businesses.
* Decentralization and streamlining of licensing and administrative processes to improve efficiency and reduce procedural delays.
* Review of fees, levies, and charges affecting the viability of licensed FL shops.
* Simplification of regulatory procedures and reduction of administrative bottlenecks.
* Greater transparency and consistency in the implementation of excise policies.
* Protection of the legitimate interests of licensed FL license holders operating in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bijon Patra, secretary, Society for the Welfare of West Bengal Foreign Liquor Licenses, said the following:

“The licensed foreign liquor trade is an important stakeholder in West Bengal’s economy and revenue ecosystem. We believe there is significant scope for policy reforms that can benefit consumers, strengthen compliance, improve business sustainability, and enhance government revenues. Through this platform, we seek constructive engagement with the government to address long-standing industry concerns and build a more transparent and growth-oriented business environment.” The Society reiterated its commitment to responsible trade practices and expressed its willingness to work closely with the government, the excise department, and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions that support both regulatory objectives and business growth.

State Minister Dilip Ghosh At CII’s Plantation & Awareness Drive Under ‘একটি গাছ মায়ের নামে’ Green Campaign As part of the Government of West Bengal’s Sstatewidegreen campaign “একটি গাছ মায়ের নামে” (Ek Gachh Mayer Name), aligned with the Honourable Prime Minister’s vision of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised a plantation and awareness prprogramn World Environment Day at the CII-Suresh Neotia Centre of Excellence for Leadership, Kolkata. The campaign, launched under the leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Secretary, Government of West Bengal, aims to enhance the state’s green cover and will continue till March 2027.

কলকাতা, ৫ জুন: বিশ্ব পরিবেশ দিবস উপলক্ষে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তের নাগরিক, পরিবহণ বিশেষজ্ঞ এবং নাগরিক সমাজের প্রতিনিধিরা একযোগে #DoubleTheBus প্রচারের মাধ্যমে রাজ্যে গণপরিবহণ বাসের সংখ্যা উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে বাড়ানোর দাবি জানালেন। তাঁদের বক্তব্য, আরও বেশি বাস রাস্তায় নামলে দূষণ কমবে, জ্বালানি সাশ্রয় হবে, যানজট হ্রাস পাবে এবং শহরগুলি আরও বাসযোগ্য হয়ে উঠবে। এই উপলক্ষে কলকাতা ও দুর্গাপুরে বাসস্টপগুলিতে প্রতীকী কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করা হয়। অংশগ্রহণকারীরা ব্যানার ও প্ল্যাকার্ড হাতে গণপরিবহণে বিনিয়োগ বৃদ্ধির পক্ষে জনমত গড়ে তোলার আহ্বান জানান।

প্রকাশিত তথ্য অনুযায়ী, ভারতের আবাসন ও নগর বিষয়ক মন্ত্রক (MoHUA) প্রতি এক লক্ষ জনসংখ্যার জন্য ৪০ থেকে ৬০টি বাসের মানদণ্ড নির্ধারণ করলেও, কলকাতায় বর্তমানে প্রতি এক লক্ষ মানুষের জন্য মাত্র ২৩টি বাস রয়েছে। দেশের অন্যতম বৃহৎ মহানগর হওয়া সত্ত্বেও এই সংখ্যা উদ্বেগজনকভাবে কম বলে মত বিশেষজ্ঞদের। তুলনামূলকভাবে বেঙ্গালুরুতে প্রতি এক লক্ষ জনসংখ্যার জন্য ৪৭টি বাস চলাচল করে।
অংশগ্রহণকারীরা জানান, গণপরিবহণে পর্যাপ্ত বিনিয়োগের অভাবে সাধারণ মানুষকে ব্যক্তিগত যানবাহনের উপর নির্ভর করতে হচ্ছে, যার ফলে জ্বালানি খরচ, বায়ুদূষণ এবং যানজট ক্রমশ বাড়ছে। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলায় গণপরিবহণ ব্যবস্থাকে শক্তিশালী করা এখন সময়ের দাবি।

এই প্রসঙ্গে মি. বিনয় জাজু, পরিচালক, EarthON Foundation (আর্থঅন ফাউন্ডেশন) বলেন, “সাশ্রয়ী ও সহজলভ্য যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থার মেরুদণ্ড হলো গণপরিবহণ বাস। দূষণ, যানজট এবং পরিবহণ বৈষম্য কমাতে বাসের সংখ্যা বাড়ানো এখন সময়ের দাবি।” সম্প্রতি রাজ্যের নতুন সরকার মহিলাদের জন্য সরকারি বাসে বিনামূল্যে যাতায়াতের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছে। পরিবহণ বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, এ ধরনের উদ্যোগ বাস্তবায়িত হলে বাস পরিষেবার চাহিদা আরও বাড়বে এবং সেই চাহিদা পূরণে বাসের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি করা অত্যাবশ্যক হয়ে উঠবে। নাগরিক সমাজের প্রতিনিধিরা পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার, নগর স্থানীয় সংস্থা এবং পরিবহণ কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে বাসের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি, পরিষেবার মানোন্নয়ন, বাস-অগ্রাধিকারভিত্তিক অবকাঠামো নির্মাণ, স্বচ্ছ তথ্য প্রকাশ এবং সবার জন্য সাশ্রয়ী ও নির্ভরযোগ্য গণপরিবহণ নিশ্চিত করার দাবি জানিয়েছেন। #DoubleTheBus প্রচারের মূল বার্তা একটাই—পশ্চিমবঙ্গের শহরগুলিকে আরও পরিচ্ছন্ন, স্বাস্থ্যকর এবং বাসযোগ্য করতে হলে গণপরিবহণে বিনিয়োগ বাড়াতেই হবে।

The initiative highlights how investing in buses can cut pollution, reduce fuel costs, improve mobility, and make West Bengal’s cities more livable.
This World Environment Day, as nations recommit to emissions reduction and liveable cities, data shows that West Bengal’s cities have failed a basic climate test. They operate fewer than 30 buses per lakh people, less than half the Government of India’s prescribed minimum. Highlighting this lack of investment in an important climate solution, citizens and civil society organizations in Kolkata and Durgapur came together on Thursday under the #DoubleTheBus initiative. Participants gathered at bus stops, holding banners and placards that highlighted the environmental, economic, and social benefits of investing in public transport. According to data compiled from state transport undertakings and urban bus systems, many Indian cities continue to operate far fewer buses per capita than many other countries. While the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs sets a benchmark of 40 to 60 buses per lakh population, Kolkata operates only 23 buses per lakh population, among the lowest ratios for major Indian cities. By comparison, Bengaluru has 47 buses per lakh population.

Despite being the third-most populous metropolitan region in India, Kolkata does not have a dedicated state transport undertaking focused exclusively on intracity bus operations. The West Bengal Transport Corporation and private operators run public bus services in the Kolkata metropolitan area. “Public buses remain the backbone of affordable mobility. “Increasing their numbers is essential for reducing congestion, pollution, and transport inequality,” said Mr. Vinay Jaju, Director, EarthON Foundation. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which recently won West Bengal’s state election, committed in its election manifesto to free bus travel for women on all public buses across the state. Trends from other states, such as Karnataka, which introduced such a scheme in 2022, indicate that this will lead to a rise in demand for buses and necessitate expansion of public bus fleets. Civil society organizations and mobility experts are urging the government of West Bengal, urban local bodies, and transport authorities to expand public bus fleets substantially, improve service reliability, prioritize dedicated bus infrastructure, publish transparent operational data, and ensure affordable and accessible public transport for all.

The event brought together cycling advocates, urban mobility practitioners, civil society representatives, and citizens to discuss the role of cycling in supporting livelihoods, conserving fuel, and advancing sustainable urban mobility. The discussion highlighted that while bicycles are often associated with recreation and fitness, they continue to serve as a vital mode of transport for millions of people who depend on them for accessing livelihoods and economic opportunities. Participants emphasized that cycling remains one of the most affordable, accessible, and environmentally sustainable mobility options available today. The event also focused on the growing importance of fuel conservation and the need to encourage sustainable transport choices. Speakers noted that bicycles can play a significant role in reducing fuel consumption, lowering transport costs, and contributing to cleaner urban environments.

The main objective of the conference was to welcome the government’s initiative, Kolkata, to produce free bus services for women across West Bengal and celebrate this important achievement. According to the two organisations, this initiative approved by the West Bengal government is a groundbreaking step in ensuring women’s empowerment, freedom of movement and economic inclusion. They believe that free public transport will strengthen women’s social and economic participation and open up new possibilities in their daily lives.

With the implementation of this policy, West Bengal became the eighth state in India to provide free travel on government buses for women. A large number of women, social workers and supporters from all walks of life attended the event. They termed the initiative a groundbreaking social welfare step and expressed the view that its positive impact will bring about significant changes in the daily lives, employment, education and economic self-reliance of countless women in urban and rural areas. This event also marked the successful outcome of long-standing movements, campaigns, and lobbying activities by various women’s organisations and groups demanding affordable and accessible transportation for women.

This policy is a “groundbreaking step”, the founder of ‘Stree Shakti – The Parallel Force’, Rekha Modi, calls it. “Free bus travel for women will significantly reduce the burden of travel expenses for women with limited incomes, allowing them to travel more freely for education, employment and other essential activities.” In our society, women currently face three types of pressures or a ‘triple burden’ – family, career and household responsibilities. Kolkata, 27 May 2026: Deeply anguished and disturbed by the tragic death of two revered Jain Aryika Matajis in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, under highly disturbing circumstances during a recent road incident, Sakal Jain Samaj, Kolkata, has strongly condemned the incident and demanded urgent intervention to ensure justice, accountability, and long-term safety for Jain saints and ascetics across the country. The community believes the Rewa incident has raised grave concerns regarding the safety and dignity of Jain ascetics and cannot be dismissed merely as another road accident. To express grief, solidarity, and peaceful protest against repeated incidents affecting Jain saints and sadhvis, Sakal Jain Samaj, Kolkata, will organise a Massive Silent Rally on Saturday, 30 May 2026, commencing at 7:30 a.m. from Shri Digambar Jain Bada Mandirji, 1 Bysack Lane, Kolkata. The rally will pass through Kalakar Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Brabourne Road, Tea Board, Ezra Street, Bentinck Street, and Dharmatolla before culminating at Metro Channel, Esplanade, where community leaders will address the gathering. A delegation will thereafter proceed to Raj Bhavan to submit a representation to the Governor of West Bengal seeking urgent intervention.

According to representatives of Sakal Jain Samaj, publicly available reports, videos, and surrounding circumstances have created widespread apprehension and unrest among Jains across India. India drawn with Uzbekistan, Syria, and Bangladesh in the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers

New Delhi, May 28, 2026: The Indian U20 men’s team has been drawn in Group B alongside Uzbekistan, Syria, and Bangladesh for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers after the draw was conducted at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Thursday, May 28, 2026. Uzbekistan will host Group B in the capital city of Tashkent between August 25 and September 6, 2026, in a centralised single round-robin format. As per the new format of the AFC youth competitions announced earlier this year, a two-phase system featuring a promotion and relegation mechanism has been introduced in the AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers. In the Qualification Phase, which India is part of, 32 teams are divided into eight groups of four, with the group winners and the seven best second-placed teams advancing to the 43rd edition of the AFC U20 Asian Cup. At the same time, the six lowest-ranked fourth-placed teams among all groups will be relegated to the Development Phase of the subsequent edition.

For the Development Phase in the Qualifiers, 12 teams are divided into three groups of four, with the three group winners and the three second-placed teams of each group to be promoted to the Qualification Phase of the next edition. Ajith KR sparked the comeback with Kerala’s first goal in the 55th minute before substitute Shamil EK produced a brilliant finish to put Kerala ahead in the 83rd minute. For Mizoram, Mesak C Lalrinngheta opened the scoring with a stunning long-range curler in the 11th minute before setting up Vanlairamnghaka for their second goal in the 34th minute in an impressive first-half display.

Mizoram had looked firmly in control during the opening half. Their attacking football caused Kerala plenty of problems, and they took the lead spectacularly in the 11th minute. Aveka opted to go directly from a long-range free-kick and her dipping effort deceived Sausan to hand the forward her second international goal in as many matches. The Blue Tigresses continued to press forward and scored their fifth in the 40th minute. Maldives goalkeeper Sausan then produced a sharp save to deny Aveka after good work from Malavika down the right flank, but India struck again in the 66th minute. Aveka rose highest to meet Sarita’s corner and powered home a header for her second goal of the evening. Two minutes later, India transitioned quickly on the counter as Aveka released Malavika down the right before the winger squared for Karishma to finish first time at the near post, marking a special evening for the local Goan girl as she scored her first brace for the country. Aveka completed her first India hat-trick in the 70th minute after Karishma advanced into the box and picked out the unmarked forward, who calmly placed her effort into the bottom corner. Despite the scoreline, India maintained their attacking intensity in difficult, hot and humid conditions, with head coach Chettri continuing to urge his side forward from the touchline.Aveka eventually rounded off the scoring in the 86th minute, meeting Malavika’s cross from the right with a diving header to complete her four-goal haul and cap a dominant attacking display from the Blue Tigresses.

Blue Tigers arrive in London for Unity Cup 2026

New Delhi, Monday, May 25, 2026: The Indian senior men’s national team, with 17 players, arrived in London on Sunday, May 24, 2026, ahead of their participation in the Unity Cup 2026. The Blue Tigers departed Bengaluru in the wee hours of Sunday morning to travel to the England capital for what would be their first match on British soil since 2002. Khalid Jamil’s side had assembled in Bengaluru on May 22, a day after the conclusion of the Indian Super League 2025-26. However, Mohun Bagan Super Giant recalled their players from the national camp on May 23. Following their last-minute withdrawal, India travelled with the remaining 17 players to London. Goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari is travelling separately and will arrive on Monday.

India (136th in FIFA rankings) will play Jamaica (ranked 71st) in the second semi-final on May 27 midnight (May 28 in IST), while Nigeria (ranked 26th) take on Zimbabwe (ranked 130th) in the first semi-final at the same time a day earlier. The two losing teams will play the third-place play-off on June 30. All matches will take place at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC. The matches will be streamed live on FanCode.
