Kolkata, August 7: The 5th Javelin Day Competition 2026, organised by the West Bengal Athletics Association (WBAA) at the SAI Sports Complex, Kolkata, witnessed an exciting display of talent across men’s and women’s age-group categories. Young athletes from districts and clubs across West Bengal competed with great enthusiasm, highlighting the growing standard of javelin throw in the state. Nadia D.S.A. emerged as the most successful district of the competition, securing three gold medals, two silver medals, and two bronze medals across different age groups. The district dominated the Under-20 Boys event with a one-two finish through Narugopal Biswas (54.74m) and Tanmay Baidya (50.50m), while Anirban Das (48.36m) won the Under-16 Boys title. Nadia also celebrated another gold through Beauty Ghosh (29.11 m) in the Under-16 Girls category. Among the clubs, Mohun Bagan A.C. delivered an outstanding performance by winning the Senior Men’s Gold through Subhendu Mondal, who produced the best throw of the competition with 64.91 metres. His effort was also the highest mark recorded across all categories during the meet. Mohun Bagan also registered notable performances in the junior categories, reaffirming the club’s strong presence in Bengal athletics.
East Bengal Club also enjoyed an impressive outing, with Debasish Adhikary claiming the senior men’s bronze medal and Sonali Das securing silver in the under-20 women’s category, while several of its athletes finished among the top competitors in their respective events. In the women’s events, Pioneer S.A. celebrated a memorable victory as Koyel Ghosh clinched the Senior Women’s Gold Medal with a throw of 28.76 metres, narrowly edging Paromita Lodh of Siliguri M.K.P., who secured silver with 28.73 metres in one of the closest contests of the day.
Other standout performances included Apurba Paul (Hooghly D.S.A.), who won the Under-18 Boys title with 52.64 metres, Rini Pakira (Hooghly D.S.A.) claiming gold in the Under-18 Girls category, and Tripti Tudu (Bally Protiva Club) winning the Under-20 Women’s title.
The competition once again showcased the depth of javelin talent emerging from districts and clubs across West Bengal. With athletes delivering strong performances despite challenging weather conditions, the championship reaffirmed the state’s commitment to developing future national and international javelin throwers. The West Bengal Athletics Association congratulated all medal winners, coaches, officials, and participating districts and clubs for making the fifth edition of the Javelin Day Competition a grand success.
