
Kolkata, 03 June 2026: Sustainable Mobility Network, in collaboration with Kolkata Cycle Samaj, observed World Bicycle Day at the Press Club Kolkata on 03 June 2026. The event brought together cycling advocates, urban mobility practitioners, civil society representatives, and citizens to discuss the role of cycling in supporting livelihoods, conserving fuel, and advancing sustainable urban mobility. The discussion highlighted that while bicycles are often associated with recreation and fitness, they continue to serve as a vital mode of transport for millions of people who depend on them for accessing livelihoods and economic opportunities. Participants emphasized that cycling remains one of the most affordable, accessible, and environmentally sustainable mobility options available today. The event also focused on the growing importance of fuel conservation and the need to encourage sustainable transport choices. Speakers noted that bicycles can play a significant role in reducing fuel consumption, lowering transport costs, and contributing to cleaner urban environments.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Vinay Jaju, Director, EarthON Foundation, said:
“Every cycle on the road represents lower fuel consumption, cleaner air, and greater economic opportunity for those who are dependent on mobility for their livelihoods.”
Speaking on Kolkata’s potential as a cycling city, Satanjib Gupta, Bicycle Mayor of Kolkata, BYCS India, remarked:
“With most daily trips in Kolkata being under five kilometers, cycling can play a transformative role in affordable and sustainable urban mobility.”
Highlighting the growing popularity of cycling, Judhajit Chakraborty, co-founder of Cyclology, said:
“It is encouraging to see cycling becoming a part of everyday life for people across generations.”
Emphasising the importance of supportive policies and infrastructure, Judhajit Chakravarti of Cyclology noted:
“A cycle-friendly city is a cleaner, healthier, and more liveable city.”
Calling for greater investment in cycling infrastructure, Kallol Bhattacharya, President, Kolkata Cycle Samaj, stated:
“Kolkata must invest in safe and accessible infrastructure for the thousands who depend on bicycles for their livelihoods.”
Reflecting on the bicycle’s enduring role in society, Sunish Deb, Coordinator, Gouribari Bicycle Training Centre, shared:
“জীবেনর প্রিত অে অে , সাইেকল চেল সে সে .”
The thematic discussion explored how bicycles support livelihoods by reducing transport expenditure and providing affordable access to work opportunities. Participants also discussed the need for improved cycling infrastructure, safer roads, and stronger policy recognition of cycling as an integral component of urban mobility planning. The event concluded with a collective call for greater recognition of cycling as a practical solution for fuel conservation, equitable access, and sustainable urban development. Participants urged policymakers, institutions, and citizens to work together towards creating a more cycle-friendly Kolkata that supports both people and the environment.
