ইন্দ্রজিৎ আইচঃ প্রতিদিন কলকাতায় বায়ু দূষণের মাত্রা বেড়েই চলেছে। তার অন্যতম বড় কারণ হলো পৌরসভার কঠিন বর্জ পুড়িয়ে ফেলা। তারপর পরিবহন সেক্টর এর দূষণ, গাছপালা কেটে প্রমোটিং, পুকুর বুজিয়ে বিরাট বিরাট আবাসন তৈরি করা , বেআইনি ভাবে কলকারখানা তৈরি, রাস্তায় ও বস্তিতে উনুন জ্বালিয়ে রান্না করা পরিবেশ দূষণের কারণ বলে মনে করা হচ্ছে। এই বিষয় নিয়ে সম্প্রতি সুইচ অন ফাউন্ডেশন এবং আসার ও কলকাতা প্রেস ক্লাব একসাথে আয়োজন করেছিলো দূষণ নিয়ে তিন ঘণ্টার সেমিনার ও আলোচনা চক্র। আলোচনায় অংশ নেয় কলকাতা প্রেস ক্লাবের প্রেসিডেন্ট স্নেহাশিস শুর, প্রেস ক্লাবের সম্পাদক কিংশুক প্রামানিক, টেলিগ্রাফ পত্রিকার প্রবীণ সাংবাদিক জয়ন্ত বসু, সায়েন্সটিস্ট ড: দিপাঞ্জলি মজুমদার, সাফার এর প্রজেক্ট ডিরেক্টার ড: গুফরণ বেজ , বায়ু দূশনের গবেষক আশিবাদ রাহা, উডল্যান্ড হসপিটালের সিনিয়র হাঁপানির ডাক্তার অরূপ হালদার, বোস ইনস্টিটিউট এর ড: অভিজিৎ চট্টোপাধ্যায়, আসার এর সৌজন মন্ডল, কলকাতা করপোরেশন এর মেয়র পরিষদ দেবাশিস কুমার প্রমুখ ব্যক্তিবর্গ। এই সেমিনারে সাংবাদিক দের পরিবেশ দূষণ নিয়ে কাজ করতে গেলে যে সব সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হতে হয় তাই নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়। প্রশাসনিক কর্মকর্তা রা ফোন ধরে না, রাজনৈতিক নেতা নেত্রী দের চাপ, প্রমোটার দের হুমকি, পুলিশি নিষ্ক্রিয়তা এই সব নানা অভিযোগ নিয়ে ও তার সুফল ও কুফল নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়।
Press club, Kolkata- The Cleaner Air and Better Health (CABH) project, funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is aimed at improving air pollution mitigation and reducing air pollution exposure in selected Indian geographies. Under CABH—Asar, Switch ON and Kolkata Press Club are organising an air quality literacy workshop for journalists in West Bengal.

What it is
The Government of India’s National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is a step towards resolving the problem of deteriorating ambient air quality. The NCAP has set a time-bound goal to improve air quality across the country, focusing on 132 “non-attainment” cities where air pollution standards are not being met. This includes 7 cities of West Bengal—Kolkata, Asansol, Barrackpore, Durgapur, Haldia, Howrah, and Raniganj. With the base year as 2017, the programme is set to achieve a reduction of 20–30% of particulate matter by 2024.
Why a media workshop?
Several organisations, researchers, and citizens work to highlight the issue of rising air pollution and its severe impacts of it on human health. Media is also a key stakeholder, having a crucial role to play. Well-informed and regular reporting on air pollution by the media would not only build the awareness of the citizens but also ensure that policymakers take the issue seriously. This could result in some accountability on everyone’s part.
This workshop will be crucial in galvanising Bengal’s action on air pollution. The workshop will simplify the issue of air pollution. It will break down the fundamentals of air quality- reading and interpreting air quality data, reporting on health vis-à-vis air pollution, and explaining existing policies and initiatives. The workshop will also detail out how to effectively report on the issue.
Workshop objectives
Access, interpret & construct: Orientation of journalists and journalism students (media personnel) to access and interpret the issue of air quality, and health data around it, and to write data-supported stories.
Actions & solutions: Familiarisation of the media personnel with policies, actions and solutions related to air pollution.
Inform, educate & engage: Equip media personnel writing in Bengali to be able to inform, educate, and engage the general public on the air pollution issue.
